Can a complete cloud migration maintain security standards?
A REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
Establishing Cloud Governance and Platform Engineering
An Internet of Things (IoT) solutions provider for commercial telematics, which had historically operated entirely on-premises or in private data center colocation, was preparing to migrate from its data center. The company needed help with cloud governance and platform engineering to keep all its computing resources in compliance with its internal security standards.
The company worked with CDW to implement CrowdStrike on all Kubernetes (EKS) pods and VMs (virtual machines) within its environment.
THE TURNING POINT
A Potent Combination of AWS Solutions
The CDW team worked with our partner AWS to leverage a combination of security and governance solutions that ensured a seamless, secure cloud migration.
- AWS Event Bridge for new EC2 or EKS node creation notifications
- AWS Systems Manager, configured to install and activate CrowdStrike Falcon9 sensors on all compute resources within each business unit
- Rumble scans for auditing and compliance using the same architecture within the environment
- AWS Systems Manager Patch Manager with configuration of patch baselines and maintenance windows for IoT workloads within AWS
THE RESULTS
Collaboration Opens the Gateway to the AWS Environment
Prior to working with CDW, the telematics provider had never been authorized to deploy beyond the AWS development environment. AWS services and CDW expertise enabled the company to finally transition its production workloads to AWS.
Here’s why it worked:
- CDW worked with the company to establish cloud governance and platform engineering for all its business units before the migration.
- These practices helped the company swiftly meet its organizational cybersecurity initiatives and requirements.
- Complying with these standards enabled the company to use the AWS environment for IoT workloads.
What’s next?
With the secure completion of its migration, the telematics provider was eager to leverage the AWS ecosystem to embark on experimental and innovative work to enhance its industrial IoT offerings.
