Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good. Not Great. This is my 2nd APC 650VA UPS and my 3rd with the same form factor. This one lasted 11 years. It is reasonably priced and reliable for the most part. The design has not visibly changed in ~ 20 years. There are a couple of issues which I would like to see improved. 1. The battery connection is not robust. The "slide on" connectors do not provide a good contact area and often become loose over time. This is an industry problem, but if APC want's to extend its recognition in the market place its an issue they can work to resolve. 2. The low/defective battery detection is unreliable. You don't get a lot of false failures, but you do get a lot of false "good battery" indications. As a result you (the owner) are going to spend a lot more time investigating battery failures than you want to. You may even find yourself purchasing more of those expensive batteries when the actual problem is the UPS itself. Would I pay more for these improvements? Probably. If it saved me the several hours a year I spend investigating and resolving UPS issues then it would be worth the extra money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Replacement for older APC UPS I recently replaced my failing APC 350U UPC with a newer APC 650 backup unit. So far I have not had any power outages so I can't yet comment on power loss handling, but the unit was easy to set up and connect to my PC. It initially showed a run time of 123 minutes but after its first automatic self check the run time then displayed as 23 minutes which is more like I expected. If I encounter an adverse problems with this unit, I'll be back to update my review.

The only issue I have with these is that they seemed to have shortened the USB management cable. They used to be about a foot longer which makes a difference in my particular office. In the future I hope they lengthen the USB cable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A proven winner To complete the addition of another computer in our tech corral we needed a new Back-UPS. We ordered the Back-UPS 650 because our other Back-UPS 650s have been tested and proven winners for our company. Rather than spending time researching other products we opt to order the proven product and not chance it with something untested. These units have a very long battery life. When the end is reached ordering the replacement battery from APC is easy and convenient. There is an alarm to 'remind you' it is time to replace the battery. We have 12+ units on-hand of various ages, so rather than waiting until we hear the battery replacement beeping notice, we keep a spare battery on-hand. As soon as the spare battery is installed, I order a new battery from APC, print the APC provided free UPS return label for the old (dead) battery and receive the new spare battery in a few days. The entire process is easy, convenient, and hassle free.

But a unit that is dead after less than a year has me wondering if the quality of work at APC has deteriorated. I will try another model. I also have a model 850 that was purchased at the same time. However I won't allow APC another chance if this occurs again.

I expect this one to be just as reliable as the older model, even though this one is noisier. Sounds like the battery circuitry "talks" as it tries to recharge the backup battery.

The connectors have a snug fit and may need a little extra encouragement to get properly attached. The batteries have a long life, so you will not need to constantly replace the battery. Thanks to APC's free return label, disposal is a breeze.

APC systems have kept me going on several occasions. Wouldn't own or run computers without them!!! Only complaint on the current APC Back-UPS 650, is that they dropped the RS-232 connector. Also, the support staff is always very helpful.

We already had an APC Back-UPS 550, so when we needed to replace two older units - one an APC product, the other of a different brand - we automatically wanted a similar APC product to the 550. These are compact and with the available ports, outlets, etc., they are perfect for our needs. We even put one in an upper kitchen cabinet to be out the way, and it produces less heat than the previous older other-brand model did. We are very happy with our acquisitions!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from lasted 9 years I don't know the life span of the whole unit is but the battery is 3 to 5 years and I got 9 out of that battery some people state that surge protectors should be replaced every 5 years and others say 10 years I'm happy getting 9 great years out of that unit. i just replaced it with another back-ups 650 the first one was a back-ups ES 650, the new one is the same with less outlets. I only use it to keep the network up during a power outage. Hopefully this one gives me another 9 years or more

It's somewhat of an untraditional use and I have not yet had the opportunity to know how it's going to perform. Can't say that I'm anxious to have to use it, but I am hopeful it will work so I'll be able to sleep without having to set up our portable backup generator.

I've have to remove everything with the exception of 2 electrical items. If I plug in three items, it shuts down and squeals at me until I get up and reset. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Close to Excellent This is a great battery backup for one or two computers - there are four battery and surge protected outlets and four outlets that are surge-only protected, no battery backup for those. The only issue I have so far is that the outlets are too close together. This means that if you're plugging in network gear (routers, hubs, switches), sound gear (speakers, microphones) that have large plugs, you can't use all of the outlets because some are blocked by the large plugs. This is a significant design oversight IMO. Otherwise the unit appears to be capable of protecting your primary equipment (computers and monitors) that have standard sized plugs.

Owned my ES650 for roughly 8 years now and besides a couple of times with it picking up the slack running tv, light and personal desktop computer for an hour or so during power outages I today carried it outside to try it running a Porter-Cable 120V 7.5A impact wrench which it did flawlessly. My Schumacher 1150 portable power station wouldn't even start it. Excellent !!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A-1 APC Battery Backup I absolutely suggest always purchasing an APC battery backup for any computer and hardware that needs that safe running of the current. Excellent investment, don't go cheap to save money, spend it and you won't be sad you did. I have used APC battery backups for over 30 years and never been disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As always, great product from APC Purchased a Back-UPS 650 to replace an APC backup with an expired battery. I'd replaced the battery in that unit once. I decided to go with the trade-in option, which was a little more costly than just replacing the battery. I'm very happy with my purchase as it was easy to install and works seamlessly with my Mac OS system. The return procedure for the trade-in unit was easy, too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far so good. I suppose I will now really know until the power goes out, but it appears to be working well for now. Since I had changed from a desktop computer and monitor to a laptop, my electrical load requirements had decreased and I figured I could move downward from my present APC, a BX1300G, to this one that I bought, the BE650G1, which only has one battery instead of 2 like the BX1300G. That way when I need to replace the battery, it is only one instead of two. As it turned out, I decided to move the BX1300G over to the TV, cable box, Blue Ray player, etc., which I presently had on just a standard surge protector. All worked out well, I would say.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reliable Backup UPS is a good value for its size and for short (depending on the load) periods of power loss, it is a reliable backup/surge protector for my computer, and other electronic devices at home. I presently own three of the UPS 650's, one of which replaced my 550 in 2019. The original three units, except for the replacement were purchased in 2008 and 2009.

I've used one for storms in case the power went out, I used it for the TV and any support equipment to keep on top of the progress of bad weather. I've never had one fail me or fail to protect my computer equipment. Even though I have my current house on whole house surge protection, I rely on APC UPS's to protect and keep running, those devices I depend on to keep us safe! Thank you APC!

The entire process was designed for someone like me: I don't purchase or install such devices more than once every ten years and I needed hand holding and total ease for every step. Printing the return label was easier than Amazon.

Other than it was very easy to set up and has made a massive positive difference in the tangle of wires that used to be under my desk. I am relieved to know that my computer equipment is protected.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Adequate Adequate protection for short outages of a few minutes to allow time to shut your system down safely. Also has a cable to connect to PC for automatic shutdown if desired. Needs a couple mor outlets though. I've used APC in the past and found them to be reliable and have good lifespan.
