Tabloid printing, ** letter/legal scanning ONLY **
We purchased the MFC-J5720DW thinking it would print/scan/copy tabloid pages. The two trays for printing is a great option allowing one to be set as tabloid and one as letter sized.
The feeder for scanning ONLY allows up to 8.5" wide paper which seems like a hidden restriction. It is an "Inkjet All-in-One with up to 11"x17" Printing and Duplex Scanning" which should read "Inkjet All-in-One with up to 11"x17" Printing and 8.5" wide Duplex Scanning". We would have even settled for a feeder from the front that would handle tabloid scanning with the glass only handling letter sized scanning.
Brother should be not be advertising the scanning feature without including the size restriction.

Not overly impressed
The printer continues to stop in the middle of printing PDF documents that are two sided Claiming it is jammed and the only way to re-set it so unplug. Also have a hard time with any paper other than regular copier paper in the try and it jamming in the printer. now I have black lines on the edges of my specialty paper I put through the rear by-pass.

I wish I had not tried
I purchased my first Brother printer.
It's good price and many good futures.
However, I thought I should not purchase it after one month use.
It is bulky
Having papers jam too often
The printing papers popping out
The paper support flap does not hold printing papers in nicely.
Part of the printing paper will fall on the floor.
Print sound is too loud
Ink consumption too fast
The actual printing speed is slower than specification

Really nice product
This printer does everything I need it to including duplex scanning and copying. It is excellently packaged. Setup takes a while but it is pretty easy. I had no trouble setting up the wireless connection or installing the ink and paper. Print speed is good and quality is very good. I am very happy with my purchase.

poor color quality, not user friendly
This might be OK for an office but for my home use it was most annoying. If the internet went out for a spell, the computer had to be restarted to get the printer to work again. It does do nice two sided document feed scanning. It is slow but then it is an all in one so it is a good feature and acceptable. The biggest issue is the muted color quality. Colors are so dull and faded looking. Just not acceptable. It is now sitting in a box in the basement. As I use my printer for greeting cards and photos that is my priority. The Brother was OK for text printing. I would not think it would be very appealing to have such faded pictures for business brochures or grafts or charts with color. I had original brother ink in the printer. The originals did not last very long. The colors were the same muted look after I put in new Brother ink cartridges. It is also fickle about what papers it will accept. Absolutely have to go through the computer to tell it what type of photo paper you are using or it will not feed. It would take 65 lb card stock but not the Avery Greeting card paper which feels no heavier. You cannot just put paper in there and get it to accept it. It would not feed any photo paper through unless I used the computer to tell it to print and i could not get it to print to the right tray just using the keypad on front of machine. I had to use the computer to tell it which tray to use. This is machine is huge and more complicated to use than the previous printers I have had. So this may be fine for an office but for home use I would not recommend it at all. I picked it for the two sided scanning. When I was done scanning I put it away.

Generally, I am pleased.
The machine works well - copies, printing, scans and two sided of each. Two paper trays allows regular paper and envelopes to be loaded at same time. Photo printing is great, b&w and color.
HOWEVER, specs say it will handle a standard business envelope, Com 10, in the paper tray. It will, but only with mods to the paper tray - otherwise, single feed from the back. Brother did not put in a "paper stop" for the #10 envelopes, so I had to fabricate one from two pieces of wood trim across the inside front of the #2 tray to hold the blank envelopes in place.

Only 840 Color Pages per Black Toner Cartridge
So I have had this printer for 2 months and I wanted to use up the initial toner cartridge a friend had a project where he needed a 70 page book printed 20 times. So I bought an extra set of print cartridges and started printing. This book has maybe 10 pages with image the rest is text. I was only able to print 12 books and I am out of Black and Yellow Toner already. These are the New Cartridges. This is not even 1/3 of the approximate page yield in their specifications. I am totally annoyed with this as that was a selling point for me. Also can't get it to print multiple copies of the same document it locks up I have to tell it to print them one at a time. Feeling frustrated with Byers Remorse!

Why I don't like this supplier and printer
The problem appears to be that these cartridges just go bad. Sitting on a shelf in their original sealed packaging or installed in the printer, the ink just seems to vanish over time. I don't have a need to print daily or even weekly. I have used a number of printers and printer technologies over the years. My favorite is STILL the old clunky HP LaserJet 4000. Cartridges print as many pages as advertised or more. They stay fresh for (literally) years whether on the shelf or installed. This is just not true of this brother printer. I bought a 4pack of genuine ink and installed it. Before even one page was printed, two of the 4 inks showed less than half full. The other two began showing low after only a few pages of mixed text and graphics.
I think the design is just bad and nothing will make it better short of delivering ultra short-lived and ultra low priced cartridges that you install before you print and then pull after a week of use. They just don't last for any amount of time. Time seems to be the limiting factor, not page count when it comes to this product.
The ink-jet business model seems to be: 1) Loss lead the printer with low capacity carts. 2) Sell far over-priced replacements carts to make the money back. 3) Blame suppliers of off-brand papers and inks for poor quality results.
OTOH, The printer does an outstanding job of producing printed output when the over-priced "recommended" supplies are used.
OTGH, The long-term and light use of this product in the home is likely to be cost prohibitive.

Cartridges are crap
These cartridges are crap. They show empty even though they have plenty of ink left inside. If you take a piece of electrical tape and cover up both sides of the clear ink window, it will trick the printer into thinking that the cartridge is full and you can keep using it. Otherwise you will only use half the ink in the cartridge

Does not last
Brother, there are too many of these complaints to ignore. This ink just disappears shortly after I open and install a newly purchased cartridge. I don't ever get the yield that you claim, even within the first few weeks after the fresh installation. I've done cartridge cleaning after cartridge cleaning. I expect much better quality from Brother. Very unhappy with this product.

Regrets
Setup was difficult. Printer is painfully slow in response when printing and frequently stops midstream when printing large files. Has to be turned off to clear the file. Now it prints pale, images midstream in a print job, then I reprint and it works fine. UGH! Unfortunately I threw the box away or I would be attempting to return this. I have been happy with other brother printers but this one was a mistake! I rarely write reviews but the emails requesting a review were annoyingly persistent! Hopefully this will stop the relentless email. I am now looking to buy a machine that actually works.

Great product
First I bought a Hewlett Packard all in one. It slowed my PC down so much I could not stand it so I returned it. The brother was highly rated so I thought I would give it a try. I couldn't be more pleased. I have noticed no difference in PC speed. The printer is easy to set up and the cartridges are reasonable. It does double sided printing to save paper. Prints 11 x 17 paper and easily prints envelopes. Buy it you'll like it.

TERRIBLE Experience!
I received a printer which immediately, out of the box, had a hardware issue which resulted in the printer printing nothing but lines when connected by USB (wireless was too slow to be useful. I spoke with 3 different individuals on one day, repeatedly confirming all the troubleshooting I had already done, was told it was Apple's fault. I then worked with AppleCare specialists to further troubleshoot and confirmed again that it was certainly with Brother. With the AppleCare specialist, we did a conference call to Brother - where the new technician also assured us this was a problem with the Brother machine, but that they could not fix it and it would need to be escalated. I was assured that FINALLY the notes were being included in my account (as had not happened the last three times) and that I would be sure to receive a call within the day. When no call came, that day or the next, I called back - only to find that there were no notes and the issue is yet to be resolved. TERRIBLE customer service - all polite, but NO follow through or support - and I still do not have a working machine or warranty issued.

Lots of Glitches
When it works, it's a great printer but it has continually lost network connection, causing me to have to delete & reinstall, thus losing what I was trying to print. I call and get support - and for a bout 10 min. it works again. Then the same thing occurs over and over and over. There has been more than once where I considered chucking it out the window... so maybe this is just my experience, but I am really not putting it at the top of my repeat buys. Support has been great, but product itself - disappointing.

Compact All-in-One
For the space I had with two other Brother printers, I needed a compact printer to print ledger (11x17) documents so I bought the MFC-J5720DW. It will do dulex letter size copying and printing. For ledger I print the front size, put the paper back in the way it comes out, and print the back size. The larger size all-in ones will do duplex ledger but I did not have the room. From the 11.25x19.25 base the rear manual loader only sticks out 2.25 when closed and the ledger paper holder sticks out 8.5 in the front.
The only problem I had was faint solid colors and pictures but changing the advanced options helped.

Installed new cartridge, purchased through Amazon as directed by the Brother website, and it didn’t even last two weeks or 20 pages. This is not the first “ink issue” we have had with this printer so we will be going the”Office Space” route with a sledge hammer and buying another printer...definitely not a Brother.

Small printer, good production & versitility
We purchased it to replace a much larger printer+copier+scanner that was in need of a drum. It was simple to install & configure. It is about 50% smaller than the unit it replaced. To date the only issue was a self-imposed paper jam. Here, the small size is less of a benefit. We cleared it out, but it was not that easy. Speed of printing, the quality of the print, ability to print several sizes of paper are all very nice features. Also, the ink supplies are less cost than with the older printer. We like it and find it easy to use.

Disappointed
The first one I got wouldn't initialize - new out of the box and didn't work. Took nearly a week to get it replaced, and customer service was quite a bit lacking in terms of getting that unit replaced. I mean, c'mon it was brand new out of the box and didn't work, and their answer was 'well, you can get it fixed (I don't want a 'fixed' new unit, I want a WORKING new unit), and they were not fast about getting the replacement to me. Plus, they were very specific that the replacement would be printer only and that I should retain all the cables, etc. from the original one, but that wasn't the case at all. The second one works ok, but I'm still a bit disappointed. I'd had an HP for years and next time, I'll go back to HP. The Brother printer is loud and sounds like it's churning out the pages. If I'm printing while I'm on the phone, I have to step away from my desk because it's so loud. Plus color printing is really, really slow, and the colors are not distinct or sharp. The paper tray to receive the printed copies seems flimsy and cheap. I like the big holders for paper. Setup was easy. It's a handsome unit, although the plastic seems a little cheap. I want to like it, I just don't.

abysmal page yield
As the others have said, this ink cartridge does not provide anywhere near 550 pages, for me it was more like 40 pages--most pages were ordinary 11-point Ariel font, greyscale, "save toner" mode, regular 8.5x11" paper. I've had this printer for about five years and I've never had an ink cartridge run out so quickly.

OK printer with one very annoying thing
This printer works well, and the touch-pad interface on the printer is clear and easy to use. But when I installed the printer, Brother added some malware to my computer that hi-jacks me to a site to order cartridges when I don't want to go there. Today, for example, I was on Amazon.com trying to place an order for a book, and every time I clicked on the check out button, instead of letting me check out,of my book purchase I was diverted to the Brother website page for ordering cartridges. That dirty trick alone will keep me from ever considering Brother again.

Good all in one printer!
Replaced an HP Officejet with this printer. The footprint is quite a bit smaller on this printer which is something I needed. Prints documents quickly and WiFi works very well on my home network. Also prints perfectly from my smart phone with the Brother app. I really like the rear door special document feeder setup. So easy to print specialty documents and envelopes without disturbing the letter and legal trays. The only issue I've had with it so far is when it is finding the edge of envelopes inserted into the rear envelope feeder sometimes it loses the envelope. By this I mean when it takes the envelope from you after insertion it backs up too far trying finding the edge (I'm assuming) and loses the envelope out of the feed rollers. New printer so maybe I'm just not getting the envelope straight enough between the movable guides.

Mediocre, at best
We use this printer in our small legal office. First, the feeder will not feed our documents head-first because of the holes at the top of the pages. We have resorted to scanning or copying pages bottom-first as a result.
Next, the feeder takes multiple pages at a time. No, not all the time, but enough that we have to monitor the copier and review each copied document to check for all pages.
Another difficulty that we experience with the product is that it's slow to "wake up." I can have several documents pending printing on my laptop and wait nearly 30 minutes for them to print.
We specifically made this purchase because of the savings on ink cartridges (vs competitors) and because our previous Brother printer was so effective. While it gets the job done, it's a little disappointing that it's not as feckful.

EXCELLENT BUSINESS MFP
Purchased to replace a 5910DW which still works except for the scanner - can't scan or copy; printer works fine. The 5720DW has many pf the same features, prints faster, and scans just as well (although I find the ADF tray less convenient for document placement). I don't use it for pictures, so no opinion there, but works well for color graphics. Seems sturdy enough and the 11x17 feature is great when needed. I'm happy with the purchase.

Ink runs out way too soon!
I updated my brother printer to a new one because the previous one lasted so long and the ink lasted for a very long time. The big issue with the new one (model MFC J895DW) is the ink runs out very quickly and no where near the 500+ pages recommended and I am not printing photos, mainly text documents. I feel Brother is cashing in on ink sales. Very disappointing.

Horrible frustrating and beyond disappointing!!!
If you can manage to get past the faulty cartridge errors and paper jams, you will get a blurry printout with missing or incorrect colors. I am an Engineer and can get anything computer or mechanical related to work. This is literally designed not to work. After buying brand new cartridges I get a few very disappointing pages before it reports empty cartridges. I give up. Having my printing done at department stores or pharmacies from now on. KMA brother.

Somewhat Happy
This all in one printer is used in a small office. We really enjoy the rear MP paper tray and the dual paper trays up front allow for different types of paper (nice not to have to change out). The only issue we have, is this multifunction printer will not print size 10 business envelopes correctly. It shifts the return address and recipient address by over half an inch to the right, from where it should appear. This printer should work with microsoft word and other programs. After spending over an hour on the phone with Brother, there is nothing they can do on their end and we would need to contact Microsoft. We have had other printers such as Epson and HP without having this problem. We had an Epson printer with similar issue and they had a software update that allowed for marginless printing with envelopes (check the marginless box and envelopes look great). This brother printer has several BORDERLESS print options for different sized envelopes and papers but not for the most commonly used envelope size 10, in U.S. (crazy). A software update is needed to correct this problem. Every time we need to print a professional looking envelope we need to go to a different office to print (very inconvenient). Almost returned unit because of this, but we really enjoy the other features and imagine with time there will be a FIX for this problem. Everything else seems to be well thought out and user friendly. Due to this, only 2 stars (would have been 5).

Some great qualities but some aggravation also.
I love the 5720 multiple tray features. I am constantly printing out full size pages, 4x6 pictures, and various size envelopes. The 5720 handles this superbly. The printing, including pictures, is of very good quality. I am quite satisfied with the ink usage also. What I am dissatisfied with is printing documents with graphics on them. Anytime I am printing out multiple document pages that contain pictures, the printer will print the first page and then freeze. The only way out is to unplug the power source and wait, then plug back into the power outlet. I use Apple's Pages and was told by a Brother representative that Pages was not supported and to use Microsoft Word. I tried that and have found that the same aggravating thing happens with Word. So, anytime I am printing a multi-page document with pictures, I have to manually print one page at a time. Ridiculous. I do not have the 5720 connected as a fax machine, so I can not comment on that aspect of the machine.

MFC-J5720DW Works As Promised
First wireless that installed first time without any issues. And more importantly stays connected to my wireless network. Something the HP products never did. Easy to setup and get working and continues to work without any glitches. Only concern I have is color saturation seems to be lacking when compared to some other printers still in use. This is based upon side by side comparison of same graphics image. Overall not disapointed at all.

MFC - J5720DW is a very good printer. In the limited time it has been in my possession; I have found it to be efficient. A couple of things were a bit challenging; such as placing "two-sided" into the system. Overtime, expectations are to fully learn and master all aspects of this machine.

Good product at a good price
I'm using this to replace my old Brother MFC - 8860DN. That was a laser all-in-one that served me faithfully for years. Now that my teacher wife has retired, our copying volume has decreased so I switched to the 5720 to get color printing and a less complicated paper path. I especially like it speed in color scanning. It's head and shoulders faster than the old one plus in scans both sides of the sheet Ina single pass. Print quality is excellent too. I very rarely Fax, so that capability hasn't been really tested.

Great printer, but slow to print
I received this printer because an older model printer (MFC-J4710 had a quirky malfunction that caused it to continually shut down. I contacted Brother customer service and since I was within my warranty period they sent me a new printer. The process was very quick and easy.
This printer has more features than my old printer and seems to work great. My only issue is that it does take a long amount of time for things to print via WiFi. It will take a minute or two for the printer to receive the data and sometimes it will cancel before it is fully received. Hopefully this is an issue I can work to improve or find a solution, but it still works. I've been impressed with Brother's customer service area when I do have problems.

Bought this to replace a good working Brother MFC-295CN printer. Do to handing a family estate, and other personal documents, wanted a "All-in-One" that could scan and print both sides of documents to be either filed or sent out in the mail. As teacher, I bought the previous Brother all and one to help in my classroom, but despite of my best efforts, I couldn't kill it. Up to this date the MFC-J5720DW has worked will. The biggest issue setting up the printer drives. That was sorted over a weekend or two.

RUNS OUT BEFORE YIELD!!
I barely printed 30 sheets, light ink before the LC203BK XL ran out of ink!
Very deceiving! Box reads 550* page yield. I could see if I printed 200 heavy ink, I could run out! Maybe replace the 550* with a more reasonable number like 200?

Not a great printer
I have owned other Brother products including printers and they have all worked fine. This product is a big disappointment. When you run a print job with multiple pages the paper shoots out with such force that the paper shoots over the paper stop (which is totally inadequate) and falls to the floor. Also, because of the poor way the tray receives paper on a multiple page job the paper does not come out evenly and pages go underneath previous pages or the pages go on the floor. I have to manually collate even a small print job of 4 or 5 pages. I am using good quality paper. I have worked with you Customer Service and they say there is no problem. I finally drilled holes in the plastic receiver tray and put a 90 degree metal angle support to hold the paper stop vertically. This stops the paper from going onto the floor but does not prevent the problems with collation. No more Brother products for me.

Great choice
This is a solid, dependable all-in-one that does it all. The wifi connection works very well on my home network, which includes a Mac as well as a couple of Windows machines (in real life I'm an IT person). One reason I chose this model is for its capability of scanning two-sided documents on a single pass, which thus far has worked flawlessly. It seems to use ink fairly sparingly, a characteristic of a couple of Brother printers we have at the office also.

Best printer I've had
I've had Brother printers before, my last printer did work, however, I wanted a dual tray, which I LOVE. No more having to switch paper. The paper I use most is in tray 1 and when I need to switch to tray 2, just go in to preferences, which pops up anyway, and change to Tray 2, the printer reverts back to tray 1 because that's the default. It has clear crisp letters and I've done quite a bit of printing and the only color I've had to change is the blue and these are the cartridges that came with the machine. Just a little hint, I learned this from the old Brother, when it shows you that you are low on ink, continue to use it till the printer stops, it doesn't hurt anything, I've even been in the middle of printing from the computer, I thought for sure I'd messed up, I replaced the blue and the printer started right up again. Another reason I choose the MFC-J5720DW over the other Brother dual tray was the size, this one fits where the MFC-J870DW was. I can't say enough about this printer, I Love It. Also, I've never written a review about anything.

NOT FOR WINDOWS SERVER!!!!!!!
Upgraded my system to Windows Server 2012 R2. HP had no drivers for my old Photosmart printer. Since I had had excellent service from my dozen or so Brother laser printers and multifunctions, I decided upon the MFC-J5720DW. Bought it from Newegg. Finally received it and, like a kid at Christmas, set it up in a flash. Guess what!?!?!? With Windows Server, you can't use USB. With Windows Server, you can't scan. With Windows Server, you can't use the device monitor software. I now have a UniFunction PRINTER!!! Nowhere in the Newegg listing is this mentioned. It was only after unpacking, setting up, and unsuccessfully trying to use a USB connection did I figure this out. What a terrible disappointment.

Slow printing but it does get the job done. Scanning is an absolute pain in the rear end! Configured mine to be a network printer/scanner via Ethernet with a static IP and it continuously loses connection to the PCs (which also have static IPs). WILL NOT SCAN to a PC unless a user is logged on to the pc. (in other words, the PC is running and no one is logged on to the PC,,,,, hence NO SCANNING!) Excellent Printer
Have had good experience with printer so far. Easy set up, connected via USB/Ethernet the first attempt. Only complaints were regarding setup of Wireless Printing feature. Guidance was not included in the box so had to find it on the product website. The instructions were broken up into several different files/pages on the website and there are no comprehesive instructions available. As a result, I had difficulty following the guidance and it took several attempts to get the various wireless printing modes to work. Still have trouble printing from some mobile devices.
I especially like the features of the printer with duplex printing and multiple sources of paper. Touch screen control panel works well also. I have not used much of the first ink cartridges after a couple of weeks of use so it appears that the ink does not get used too fast.

I can't leave photo paper in my printer because when I copy it pulls from that tray unless I manually override the "auto select" feature and make it pull from the correct tray for EVERY sheet copied. I finally just pulled the photo paper out and use only one tray. So the dual tray feature is useless. Can't get the auto feed feature to work either. I have three Brother laser printers (different locations) and love them but this ink jet is terrible.

The purchase of this wonderful 'All in One' has allowed my home-based business to run leaner-with a much smaller equipment 'footprint', while allowing me to create and present materials on a par with the 'print shops' of my former corporate employers.

Good Printer
Good print quality. Ink usage is good and ink prices are much better than other brands.

Good Choice economically
A little disappointed in the color printing, Not as vivid as would be expected. Color is good just not strong.
Very good choice for the money. more bell and whistles than the last printer I had at a little over half the price of the old one ( different Brand.

Black ink did not last long
Not sure what happened. Put in the new black ink cartridge, ran a few tests to clean out the ink nozzles and then the black ink cartridge was empty. It must have been a dud cartridge because I did not run over 500 copies before it was empty!

No ink for you!
Same as everyone else. Must be evaporating. Maybe 10 pages.
