There really is nothing bad about this lens. Pictures are tack sharp across the range. Of course IS would be great but it is light enough to hand hold. Still a bread and butter lens.

Great everyday lens. I bought this to replace my original lens (Mark I) with this second generation version when a problem developed on the original lens after 20 years and thousands of shots. The second generation appears to be as sharp and a little bit lighter (which is nice).

Couldn't recommend a lens enough!
As per the title, I couldn't recommend a lens enough. I take a lot of portraits and sports photography shots, and needed a very diverse lens. I take almost all my pictures with this lens and while I wish this lens had a lower f-stop such as 1.4 or 1.8, I still love the ability to zoom while getting a good bokeh in my photos. Seriously such a good price and investment for such a diverse lens! literally my favorite in my gear collection!

Super sharp EF lens on Canon R5
The EF Canon 24-60 2.8 Mk II lens is a very sharp lens with excellent contrast and is reasonably fast. I've tried the RF version but frankly dis not see enough improvement to justify a change. The In body stabilization in the R5 works wonders with this lens. I did have a Tamron 24-70 with stabilization before buying this Canon. For whatever reason, the Tamron's stabilization did not work properly for me on the R5. Also the Tamron had a different color balance compared to my other Canon lenses. If you have both DSLR bodies and R bodies like the R5 or R6, this is a superb all around lens.

A definitive contender...
If your still doing homework on a lens of this caliber and price tag, then my review should only add confidence in a purchase. The build is of rigid and pretty standard professional grade expectations added the weather seal for environmental elements. I shouldn't be noted but common sense applies to complete the seal with a filter as stated in the manual. Im old fashioned and like the heft and feel, i could ask for better containment than engineered plastic, how about t-6061 aluminum?? Maybe then no one would complain about a price-tag. Furthermore, the optics are just phenomenal, from 24-70 if you use the focal length respectfully. Sharp, sharp, sharp and not afraid to use it wide open in any circumstance. Slightest distortion but critical in studio. Focus and zoom execute excellent and comfortable turns. simply a pleasure and all around contender.

Awesome standard zoom
I shoot many fast paced events where timing is key to capture moments as they unfold in a natural way without subjects realizing I'm there. The 24-70 II fits those needs completely with fast, accurate autofocus, sharp rendering, punchy images and a reasonable zoom range that gets me just close enough to capture action as it unfolds. I've been quite pleased with the performance of this lens on the event floor and noticed an increase in my keeper rate versus my previous Sigma lens. This lens really has held its own in low light events paired with the 6D.

Sharp
I have replaced my old 24-70 with this new lens and am very happy I did.
Sharp from edge to edge and ready for 40 plus megapixel full frame sensors.
The only thing I do not like is the lens hood which although lighter and smaller attaches to the moving end of the lens possibly making the lens more vulnerable to abuse a pro lens can receive during it's lifetime..

EF 24-70mm f/2.8 II USM
I received this lens on Monday, and sold my previous favorite, the 24-70mm L f/2.8 on Tuesday. I have waited for this lens for too long. I shot all day Monday and found this new upgrade really brilliant; It's lighter, looks better and the photos that come out of it are a lot sharper. The color rendition matches those of my 85mm L f/1.2 and the 70-200mm L f/2.8. If Canon had included IS into this baby it would have been a work of art, a masterpiece. I am sure there is a reason for this; Canon knows better. I shoot manual and don't think I desperately need IS. Moreover, I am learning how to lock my elbows as I shoot, and the result is paying off...I have taken about a thousand photos and every single of them is as sharp as the other.
Thank you Canon. I love what this lens does!

I purchased this lens as a replacement for my old 24-70 and received it the day before I left for Venice Italy. I was truly shocked of how fast the AF was, and the sharpness from edge to edge. Amazing go-to lens...
This is my first experience with a 24-70 variant... Coming from the 24-105L, the difference is quite significant. This lens has incredible resolution at 24mm edge to edge on my 5D Mark III. Even wide open, the microcontrast is simply amazing. The images look better wide open than the 24-105L does at f/8. It is THAT good.
The lens does soften a tad at 70mm. It is still extremely sharp, but not exactly to the level of 24mm. To give a comparison, I find the 24-70 II at 70mm similar in sharpness to the magnificent 70-200 II at 70mm. You would be hard pressed to find any difference in image quality.
Build quality is excellent. Most of the exterior is engineering plastic versus metal or other materials. Still feels extremely high quality and the weight reduction from the previous version is welcomed.
The only downfall with the lens is the lack of IS and the cost without it. Not exactly required for everybody, it is a very nice feature on the long end of the zoom range. For the price of this lens, IS should have been included. I am assuming Canon had good reason to omit IS for image quality benefits.
As far as copy variation, the first copy of this lens I had to return due to a decentered lens element causing softness on the right side of the frame at 24mm... My second copy I am currently using appears to be perfect.
Other image quality attributes this lens offers include beautiful 18-point sunstars when conditions are right. CA levels are extremely low if not non-existent. Flare is well controlled. There is quite a bit of light-falloff (vignetting) but is easily corrected in post if need be. The lens also features very quick AF, one of the fastest I have used honestly.. As with the 70-200 II, I really like the locking lens hood. The zoom lock is also a very nice feature as zoom lenses have the tendency to creep with heavy use over time. There is no zoom creep so far, but time will tell how the internals will hold up to heavy use in this case.
I am extremely impressed by this lens overall. It has prime lens image quality (if not better in some cases) with the versatility of a zoom. I highly recommend this lens.

Has a great feel to it.
I got this lens as a refurbished lens directly from Canon and couldn't be happier. It included the caps, hood and a bag but no manual and no retail box. If it included it included the retail box and manual it might give it better resale value, but other than that it is sharp, smooth, lighter and smaller than the older 24-70 f/2.8 and has a better feel on my camera. I like the smaller tulip hood compared to the older hood which is quite large. I plan to buy the new refurbished 16-35 f/2.8 III as soon as I can to replace the first model Canon made. The pictures speak for themselves.

Several prime lenses in one
Photography has been my hobby for over 20 years. I am not a pro. In order to evaluate a new lens, I shoot everyday life instead of brick walls. This lens is sharp wide open at F2.8. You do not need to stop it down to increase sharpness. This is what I love about this lens. It is like having several prime lenses in one package. I used the 35L and 50mm F1.4 for several years. They are good lenses. But I had to stop them down from F1.4 to F2.0 or F2.8 to get sharp images. The combination of this lens on a 5D3 are heavy. Carrying them around for a full day is not easy. Despite the weight, I still wish it had image stabilization. Its autofocusing is very good, although it is not any better than the autofocusing of the 35L or 135L or 300mm F4L. But then again, I haven't done any scientific measurements. This is all based on my everyday use. The bokeh is "good". Although I much prefer the bokeh of the 135L. Shooting into bright lights is surprisingly good. Overall, I love this lens. I don't like the high price though. But if you think of it as several high quality prime lenses in one, I guess that can justify the price.

Nothing Better in a 24-70 2.8
I've been using this since Sept. of 15 & my goodness! Super sharp pics
I purchased this lens along with the 70-200 with IS. I purchased them to photograph horses, the pictures have been amazing especially since I shoot indoors in low light and my subjects are typically moving quite fast. The 70 - 200 is great when you are a little further away, the 24 - 70 is best when you have the opportunity to get in closer to the horse and rider.
I look forward to buying the 16-35 mm lens. The lenses are not cheap, but, as they say you get what you pay for.

Worth the money?
I am an advanced amateur hobbyist that recently upgraded to 5D MkIII from Canon 7D w/ EF-S 17-55mm f2.8, so I thought i'd save a nickel and get the XXX Brand 24-70MM f/2.8 but when I got it on the camera it had really bad vignetting. I was used to the previous set up that had almost no vignetting. So back to the brick & mortar store it went. Got my refund and ordered this lens. After two days of test shots I am convinced that this lens far and away out performs the XXX Brand (at least for someone with my skill set. I believe that great pros can make a coke bottle work as a lens but amateurs need a great piece of glass like this lens to help us compensate. The first test I did was directly at the sun on a very bright sunny day and man what a difference over my old setup. Canon got this right and this lens makes a great combo with the 70-200mm f2.8 IS II.

A perfect balance of performance, build, and IQ
Fantastic AF performance, image quality, and the build is SOLID. I have no complaints with this lens. Works great in low light. Distortion is pretty low and easy to correct with panoramic stitching. Pretty much edge-to-edge sharp with very slight detail loss at the farthest fringes at the widest zoom angle.
There is some flare sometimes like other users comment on, but it has not bothered me at all.

Series II L Lenses
I recently went on a shoot with Canon where they were allowing us to use the recently released "L" Series II lenses. While I was very happy with my series I lenses the difference in sharpness was incredible. Since I am planning on upgrading to the new Series 5ds when it is available in June I was sure that I would need to upgrade to the series II lenses. I've now made the transition to the 16-35, 24-70, 100-400 lenses in anticipation of the new 5ds body. These lenses are just INCREDIBLE. Very, very sharp! I've always shot with prime lenses but I really needed something versatile and purchased this lens. I'm very satisfied with the performance and picture quality that I get as this is mounted to my 5D Mark 3. As for the price, I think it's way too expensive especially considering that the closure is made of plastic unlike the first versions which is made of metal. This is why I gave the rating of 2 stars in quality because the plastic closure doesn't justify the L Series of this lens. I also believe it isn't weather sealed either but I could be wrong. But it's made in Japan if that means anything. Overall, I'm satisfied.

One of the finest
The build quality of this lens is apparent the moment you hold it. It's heavier than it looks and feels refreshingly solid.
The resistance on the manual focus ring is satisfyingly smooth requiring no more or less force than you'd ever want for tuning quickly and precisely at the same time.
The heft of the lens is most apparent when zooming and becomes more obvious when it's pointed upwards (gravity and stuff. The wonderful thing is how the lens manages to hold it's place when pointed DOWNward. Although there is a zoom lock, after a year and a half of use I have yet to experience any lens drop even after traveling with the camera shouldered for long walks.
The AF is super snappy and uncanny in its accuracy especially when using center point focus. On a 6D body, it is impressively reliable in low-light situations. Only the flattest, no-contrast circumstances seem to offer any AF issues.
Image quality is superb and more likely to be bottle-necked by the camera its on rather than by the lens itself. It still blows my mind that even under the worst circumstances chromatic aberration never seems to existent.
Truly it's the Excalibur of standard zoom lenses.

VERY much worth the upgrade
I am replacing the prior 24-70 with this lens, I've never been overjoyed with the older one... can't really put my finger on why, and being the lens that I use to make the majority of my money that may sound strange... but it's the truth....
This new one... WOW, I LOVE it. The images are outstanding! I'm also shooting the 5D3 and two 1DX's with it so the combo of all new gear may be some factor but I'm VERY VERY happy with the new lens.
Super sharp everywhere, quick autofocus, great build quality. I like the new lens extension lock feature.
One "issue" I have with the lens and it's only because of a habbit I have... I frequently will put the lens between my legs so I can use my hands to work with a client... the new lens hood is smaller and I seem to always be pushing the new locking button on the lens and the hood rotates... no fault of the hood or the lens, just something different that I need to make an accomodation for in my workflow... :)

First Class Lens, Simply the Best
My review of the EF 24-70mm F/2.8 II USM. This lens is simply the best standard zoom lens on the market. When you first hold this lens in your hand, you know you are holding a powerful and valuable object of the finest digital imaging technology. The build quality is rigid, solid, and sleek. The lens filter is surprising large compared to most lenses at 82mm diameter. It has a lock switch only at 24mm, AF & MF mode switch, focus ring and focal length ring. Aside from the exterior technical details, the 24-70mm depicts some of the most beautiful, gorgeous and stunning colors that I have ever seen a lens can produce.
Some may ask, can this lens really be that good and worth high price tag? Some may ask, can't I just get away with an affordable lens? It certainly depends on your photography goals, but if you want the sharpest, cleanest shots to enhance your skill to the professional grade level, this is the lens. After hemming and hawing for months over whether I should buy this lens or not, I made the leap of faith, and I must honestly say that I don't regret it. In fact, unless I'm using my super telephoto lens, this lens practically is glued to my 7D Mark II now as my all around go to standard zoom lens. The only thing I wish Canon could improve on the quality of the lens hood. It feels too 'plastic'. I really do like the quality of the older lens hoods from years ago with more solid harder plastic material. The saving grace with the new lens hood is that it has nice lock switch. In conclusion, the 24-70mm is a first class lens!

Excellent Lens!
I bought this lens about 8 months ago and it's been hard to take it off my camera ever since. Previously, my go-to lens was the 70-200mm 2.8 IS L series but I wanted something wider that would give me equal image quality and the 24-70 has not disappointed me yet.

Superlative Zoom Lens
As always the service, delivery and product quality is excellent. The product arrived in excellent condition. This lens is expensive but the optical quality is unmatched in this class. I wish I would have purchased it sooner. Now I can produce tack sharp results at F2.8 which I have not been able to achieve with other lenses of this type.
The lens is heavy, but it pairs very well with my 5D Mk III.

No image stabilization is a drawback
A good lens. I bought it as a replacement for the 24-105 f4. Yes, it does go down to f2.8, but you also lose the IS, meaning you have to increase shutter speed to eliminate camera shake. It ends up being a trade off at 70mm. Photos are sharp and excellent color though.

Excellent Sharp Zoom
I have only 2 zooms and this is 1 of them. I currently use all Canon DSLRS. The lens is extremely fast, sharp and renders a beautiful image file in RAW.

Design flaw ruins an otherwise great lens
Lens was great until it stopped working due to the dreaded Error 1. Doing some research I was shocked to find out how common this issue is and it suggests this is a design flaw that Canon needs to address and issue a recall on. I paid $450 to have the lens repaired thinking that would solve the issue and it's recently happened again after only 1.5 years of light use.
