Epson Perfection V39 Photo Scanner is rated 3.90 out of 5 by 526.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Doesn’t run on a Mac Purchased because it was affordable. Built well, lightweight which is nice. Very portable with a USB cable for both power and data transmission. I’m disappointed that it doesn’t work with OSX 10.15. Software will install, but the drivers haven’t been updated. I was able to find a 3rd party that works with the scanner for $30...seems like the care more about getting hardware out rather than improving software.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Waste of time and money! This device has never worked as advertised. Even with the most current software available, this Epson Perfection V39 Scanner does not live up to its name. Each and every time I have tried to use this scanner it is a huge waste of precious time and money. The last time I tried to use this device, it wouldn't even connect. Again, a huge waste of my time and my money. Stay away from this device!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Why not Chrome Bought this device assuming I could use cloud based software. Instead, I had to drag out an old Windows machine to use. Old school technology. Hope it scans better than the software.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Seems to work well. Bought 2 weeks ago, felt like going back in time with buying a scanner separately from all in one. Had a bit of trouble downloading, but work great. Did exactly what I wanted

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Connectivity Problems and Misleading Advertisement I just installed it and most of the time I get a scanner not connected message. It does work when it does connect. It is slow. I bought the V39 because it mentioned it included software to stitch together scans. From what I can find its only for compiling multiple document scans into one file. I was expecting something to stitch pictures together that were bigger than the scan bed. Frustrated I spent extra on the V39 over the V19 as this software is of no use for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top 3 Purchases of 2020 I’m so glad I got this scanner. I’ve used it everyday since I got it to scan about 200 pictures per day. I do wish that it scanned a little quicker but other than that I love it. Software is easy to use and set up is a breeze.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from will not start up I received this scanner today, have been trying to download the drivers and it will not work. I need help. Found the support site and trying to download drivers now. No lights on the scanner and no way to know if it is work since there is not a start or power button, it is connected via usb port. So far I hate it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Addition To Home Office Bought the Epson V39 in September for my home office. I needed to sign and scan documents and contracts to forward to vendors. It was easy to set up and immediate compatibility with my windows 10 based laptop. Kickstand fits perfectly on my desk. Scans are clear and upload quickly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Installation I have owned many scanners. This was the easiest install ever, it did not come with 64 bit Windows 10 Drivers, found them on Epson Website in 15 seconds Downloaded plugged in Scanner and it is working. Even works with my old PhotoShop 7, I can scan into PhotoShop. Last Scanner did not update to 64 bit drivers. So there off my list of companies I will buy from.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very happy I just bought this scanner and am very impressed with it. I've only scanned a few pictures so far and am very happy with how they came out. I also like the size of the scanner and since I don't do a lot of scanning I like the fact that I can unplug it from the USB port when not in use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great scanner I bought this for my home, and it's been a great purchase. I have another scanner but I end up using this Epson much more for it's ease of use. Just plug in the USB on the pc and I'm ready to go. The options for customization is straightforward and it produces very clear scans. I like the option to create a document with multiple pages.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Difficult Install I have two laptops at home with no optical DVD drive - it is impossible to download the software online. U can get the drivers, but not the software. So I can scan a photo, but not pdf files. I bought it to create pdf files.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It works! Works so much better than my previous Epson V550 which was a problem from day one. I really wanted the 550 to work but it must have been a dud. Out of warrantee so I sold it for parts. Some trepidation buying another Epson but i'm happy now except for not being able to scan negs and slides which means renting a pro machine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pretty good For the price the scanner is very good. However, it said scanning a page should only take about 30 seconds but it takes well over minute per page. Now my computer was pretty old, I'm getting a new one this week so maybe it will be faster.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't get if you have a Mac I bought this because Epson said it was compatible with Mac OS El Capitan. I have a perfectly good Epson scanner, but it id not compatible with Mac OS El Capitan. Like my old one, this one is also not compatible with Mac OS El Capitan (10.11), even though the company website says that it is compatible. Now I have to take if back. It is obvious that they have not tried to use it with the newest Mac OS operating system.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Epson V39 Scanner Easy to install. Worked well once I figured out how to run it (not long). Have the basic scan of pdf & jpeg fairly well down. Pretty easy to use. Have not tried all aspects of scanner still need to learn more, but so far what I done I am satisfied with the results. Price very affordable. Have always used HP All-In-One printer, scanner, etc, but the scanner just when out on it, so instead of moving printers around at three different locations so I could have a scanner it turned out cheaper and EASIER to buy the Epson scanner. So far so GOOD!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from V39 Scanner We bought the V39 as a replacement for a ten-year-old Epson flatbed that was no longer supported by Windows or Epson. Its primary purpose is as a portable unit for our genealogical travels. On a recent trip to two relatives homes and a library, it performed as expected, copying hundreds of photos and records. The resolution is not high enough for 35mm film, nor is it set-up for transparencies. The D-max is not published, and undoubtedly lower than our higher end scanners, but the scans are more than adequate. We particularly like the V39 as a portable unit: very light weight with no heavy transformer and only a usb cord to lug around.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 4 Months until total failure I bought this scanner 4 months ago. It will not even power on now. I am submitting my issue to Epson as it is under warranty. While Epson may resolve my issue, this product deserves a 1 star since its only been used 5 times within the 4 months before it broke.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Plug and Play gotta love it It came with all the software and does all of the work cleaning up. I am converting all of my old photo's to digital and it works great. I also scanned all of my Grandma's old pictures and they came out better then the original faded pictures. I would recommend for the price and ease of use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Scanner is ok, but ... I bought the scanner a little over a month ago but wasn't able to connect since the scanner end of the USB cable was too large/wrong shape. Customer service was of no help. I finally bought an non-Epson cable that worked. The scanner works fine but I was very disappointed in both the customer service and the in box documentation as well as the CD contents. I have been very satisfied with Epson products I have bought in the past.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked fine until it didn't Installed it on a MacBook Pro. Worked fine for a long time but after using a Epson Fastfoto scanner on the same machine, it can no longer connect to the V39. Reinstalling all drivers and utilities did not help. Epson drivers don't seem to be compatible when running multiple devices on one machine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice scanner.....when it works!! Often the scanner gives message that it can't communicate with computer...a well documented issue in many reviews. All updates done....Sometimes take multiple deletions and re-installations of software to get scanner to connect and work....VERY AGGRAVATING!! Support just walks you through same process several times until things click. My computer is less than a year old and completely up to date.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Scans - but for how long I bought this scanner earlier this month. Plugged it in & it sounded like it was grinding itself to death right out of the gate. So I ordered a replacement & the new one had the same issue. I can't say how long it would take for it to stop working - but it certainly sounded like it was making a speedy headway toward that end. I am a fan of Epson products & I will just replace it with a higher end model. I'd rather pay once for something that lasts than buy the cheapest thing & have to replace it early on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really miss this scanner.... I have both sizes of Perfection scanners. Loved the little and light V39, but now it will only scan once for me, before it freezes up. Would really like a fix for this. No clue why this problem started. I am reluctant to replace it with the same model.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New Scanner I just bought this and have not used it, but it looks really cool. It is all black, it says Epson on it. it came with a cord, with the old samsung looking charger end and the other end with a USB on it. I now own a new black Baggie tie from the cord and the awesome clear bag about 1.5"X3" and I blew it up and popped it scaring the holy crud out of my cat which turned around and clawed me. I deserved it my wife said. I am sure this is going to be fine for putting in pictures and receipts or else I would not have bought it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfection v39 scanner I purchased this to replace my v33 perfection scanner. My 3 in one printer had issues with scanning due to upgrades in the operating system. I love this scanner, energy efficient, compact size, performs as well as it looks. I scanned a family photo from 1984 and it corrected the minor flaws in the hard copy. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this light, inexpensive scanner My 3-in-one, now ONLY scanner, just passed-on to Electronics Heaven, and I needed a good but inexpensive REPLACEment. THIS is the O N E !!! I will recommend to Epson that they have it automatically connected to MS-Word when you scan documents to create electronic text, BUT, it IS NOT DIFFICULT to do yourself. Text is in windows, but you already love to do a bit of edit/rework on your text-to-electronic DOCX files, right? E N J O Y !!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great. I have a Mac and had struggled with an old HP scanner borrowed from friends. Read online that Epson scanners are best with Macs and hooray, that's true! This little scanner is easy to use, lightweight, easy to store. For some reason, the light doesn't go on when I first plug the USB cord into my Mac, but when I launch the software, everything works fine. Love the one-touch buttons on the front edge. I recommend this scanner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice!!! It's so good to have an Epson scanner again. My old one was a 1660 I used with an old XP based computer & I loved it. Finally got a new computer and decided to get this scanner. Great color photo scans. Documents too. I'd recommend this to anyone. So easy to use. Setup was a breeze. Software is great too. Surprised that it automatically recognized the size of a color picture. My old one did a prescan & had to manually scale it before the final scan. This one does it all for me!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't fear buying refurbished at Epson! I have put this machine through its paces in nearly 2 months use. USB 2.0 slot powers the unit. No keeping up with an AC cord. People who heavily use scanners would consider it ( about 16 seconds prep for each scan) rather slow. Perfectly satisfied with picture definition and replication of very small print. Would recommend this unit to a more casual user of scanners, but seems to be ok with multiple daily use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product for the price! I purchased this scanner to scan old photos at a higher resolution than my All in One. Setup was very easy. After scanning about 20 old faded color photos I was blown away by how well the auto color correction works with faded photos which makes it much easier to correct colors in Adobe Elements.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked great for 1 year, then software glitch killed it After 1 year of successful scans (Windows 10), this message started popping up: "Cannot communicate with the scanner." I uninstalled and reinstalled Epson's software multiple times, tried different USB ports, etc. Occasionally, I could get it working again, but after one scan, it would freeze. Support for troubleshooting this problem is nowhere on the "Support" page of Epson's website. FAQ's were no help. Surely, I'm not the only customer with buggy software issues. Come on Epson!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality reproduction I've had it about a month. I copies 3 or 4 photos simultaneously and keeps them separate. I have an Epson printer that scans and an old photo that did not scan well on the printer came out as an excellent reproduction on the V39.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it Got this as a Christmas present and love using it. It scans the pictures beautifully even ones that are in old albums with plastic covering them. My only thought on how they could improve this product is to work on the noise when it is scanning. It is quite loud and actually makes the scanner sound very cheap.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent for the price! This printer for me is a "bit" of excellence. Here's why? It scans multiple photos at once as oppose to one at a time??? The clarity is good, 1900 negatives, photos are excellent. I don't know what the problem was with others not being able to reproduce in jpeg, but no problem. Know your computer... I would recommend this scanner primarily on the multiple jpegs I'm able to produce from one scan of six different photos.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best! Scans documents perfectly-which is the main reason I needed it. Excellent at photos too!Comes with easy to use software with several options-I just use the basic one for scanning and it worked great. For a quick scan it also has buttons on the front of the machine itself. User Tips: No power cord!-plugs in your computer's usb port like an external disk drive. (very cool) Before first use just go to the Epson website and download the drivers with the scanner unplugged from the usb port. After download is complete just plug scanner in usb port- but wait nothing happens! Don't look for an on/off switch there isn't any. But don't sweat it ! It just takes a full minute or two for the scanner and computer to jive . After a minute or so the scanner's red light will come on and voila your ready to go!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from IT DOES THE JOB I bought this a couple of months ago. I read all the reviews about not working with Windows 10 but took a chance because I really want to digitally archive all my family photos. Well the reviews were right. It does not work with Windows 10. That was a BIG disappointment. I researched scanners extensively and did not find ONE that said it specifically works with Windows 10. I think Windows 8 was the most recent o/s that was listed as compatible on most brands. Why are the scanners not updated to work with Windows 10!? You would think they would update with the current technology. Fortunately I still had a laptop with Windows 7 so I was able to connect it to that laptop and it worked fine on it. It's just a bit inconvenient to have to use a secondary laptop which I will eventually have to copy all my pictures to the laptop I use regularly. I haven't used a lot of the features, software etc yet as my main focus is just to digitize all my photos. Many reviews said the scanner was pretty loud. That is not an exaggeration! It is quite loud and not real fast either. If anyone finds a good, reasonably priced scanner that works with Windows 10, I would love to hear about it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hardware great, software not so much This is my third Epson Scanner and the hardware has evolved in the 20+ years I've been using them. The V39 is thin, sleek and operates very well, giving me excellent quality scans. Then there's the epson software. On the Mac side, it's basically the same interface as the one I first used way back in the Mac OS 9 days. And it shows. First off, the drivers for the scanner doesn't seem to recognize any of the buttons on the front of the Scanner. I assume they work in Windows, but Epson doesn't seem to really be invested in feature parity with the Mac. The actual scanning software works okay, as long as you keep in mind that the software requires that you don't just click on a button -- you then have to move the mouse/cursor to have the software do what the button says. It's an additional step that makes the software seem like a quick knock-off so Epson can say it's Mac compatible. However, it's like having an game controller that requires you to hit enter after pressing any of its buttons. I first discovered this awkward need of the software after clicking on the Preview scan button and waiting minutes for the scanner to do something, only when I move the mouse cursor outside of the button's area did anything happen. I tried to use Apple's own Image Capture app, but missed a number of features that the Epson Scanning software had, so I'm resigned to using this crippled interface in order to get better scans. The scans are excellent, the settings sometimes gets "stuck" and I end up choosing the simple scan , doing a preview and then going back to the advanced settings and then they can be changed. Overall, I'm quite pleased with the hardware -- scans are quick and the scanner is quiet. Pretty much state of the art, imho. The software for the scanner, is sorely lacking and still as wonky and odd as it was back in the 90's. The best thing I can say about the scanning software provided by Epson is that it doesn't crash that much and is a great motivator to find a suitable 3rd party software to use instead.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Terrible My Epson V39 did not work out of the box. None of the buttons worked, although it would scan through the very cumbersome software. I contacted Amazon technical support and even un-installed and re-installed software package at their request. But it did not work. I also used the trouble shooting tips from the Epson user guide, but it still did not work. I am returning for a refund through Amazon because this unit is defective.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Epson V39 Scanner I like the compact scanner as it doesn't require so much desk space. I like the fact that it is thin. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Images - Spotty Software Easy to use, light, portable and convenient: Unfortunately, this has been offset by quirky software which has recently made this a pesky, unreliable device. Epson needs to worry less about add-ons and enterprise related invasiveness and more about getting their products to just work with different operating systems and applications (Adobe and Nuance pdf to name two) without the scanner driver needing to reloaded on a regular basis. Sad disappointment!

An excellent product, and surprisingly portable too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good for the price If you want a simple inexpensive flatbed scanner, this will do the trick. My old Epson 4 in 1 would not print after Windows 7 and I could not get it's scanner to jive with Windows 10. I bought the V39 on sale and for the expense, it could not be beat. Rated 5 out of 5 by from It leaves lines (artifacts), stitches are a joke, The Epson V39 scanner generates longitudinal darker lines on the light homogeneous areas of photos and documents. These artifacts do not appear if you use the Epson 3200 or V550 (CCD sensor) scanners. Installing the software was unusually difficult. The bundled ArcSoft Scan-n-Stitch Deluxe 1.1.2.55 software stitches ridiculously, so you can't make an A3 from 2 A4 scans as advertised.

This unit is very compact and gets its power from the computer USB port. I am using it basically to scan music to so it can be used with an iPad. It's not the fastest scanner I've used, but for the price it's quite good. Not needing a power supply, makes the scanner very portable and as a musician it means I can scan music on the spot to create a PDF of it. I just hope it lasts more than 3 years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good, inexpensive scanner I own a Mac. I can scan documents well of various sizes, but the scanner is not programmed to perform all its functions with a Mac. For example, the "Easy Photo Scan" function does not work with a Mac. There is an "EPSON Software Updater" function, but it has nothing new to make the scanner more compatible with my up-to-date Mac. Very disappointing!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It does the job for photo scanning! While I am pleased with the performance of this scanner, especially for the price, there is one issue I wasn't nuts about. When installing the software, you don't have a choice as to where to install it, so it was installed on my small SSD boot drive instead of my 2GB storage drive. I tried scanning photos at various settings and all worked great; good color and saturation. The auto settings scanned to JPG with I suspect medium to heavy compression settings, but if you scan as a BMP it's uncompressed and you can edit it as desired. In the advanced settings I was pleased to see that you can adjust the compression settings, as well as storage locations. One pleasant surprise is that if I put several photos on the glass, it scans them and separates them into separate JPG files, which saves a lot of time. You can also have it auto-remove dust and scratches. It did an adequate job of that for a time saver, but I prefer to use Photoshop for that for more control. Great unit, I'd recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lots of bang for the buck -- Works flawlessly I bought this WONDERFUL scanner on sale because I couldn't find drivers to upgrade my old Windows XP scanner to run on my 64 bit Windows 10 system. I concur with this scanner's good reviews. For my modest scanner needs this flatbed fit the bill. I just put the installation CD in the computer, downloaded the Windows 10 driver and the event manager utility and plugged in the USB cable from the scanner to the computer. Then I was scanning, printing, & emailing documents & pictures. I think I would have given this device 5 stars if I could turn it off when not in use without having to unplug its cable. For the price this scanner is unbeatable!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from High quality scanning I asked for this scanner for my birthday and I have loved using it. I am working on a project to convert all of my family's and my in-laws' photos into digital copies so that they are saved from aging and I can print as many copies as I'd want! This is sure doing the trick. The family have loved looking through pictures, and the scanner has been able to brighten up a lot of the aged photos. It scans in great detail! The only issue I had was that I use a Mac and the installation information came on a CD (I don't have a external one). It took me awhile to find out how to do the installation online without the CD. It's definitely a time consuming project, but worth it

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A surprise in a small package. When the lamp burned out in my big '3 in 1' machine, I purchased this little scanner until I could get the big printer repaired. Now, after using it for a few weeks, forget about the BIG scanner. This one is quicker, makes better scan images and has on-screen controls that are easy to use. It sits on top of the big printer. I am very pleased and pleasantly surprised at how good this scanner is.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Doesn't work with Windows 10 It sat in a box for a month before I got the chance to start using it. It works fine for my Windows 7 machine but it doesn't work with Windows 10. With Windows 10 it won't do 2 scans in a row without restarting the program. I have talked to others who have the same problem. We haven't taken the time to figure it out. The reason a person buys a scanner in the first place is because they don't have a lot of time to mess around and they don't want to use their printer to scan. When I get some time, I'll try to figure it out. I don't know why Epson wouldn't just make it work the first time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very frustraiting scanner I have only had this a short time & it already drives me crazy. The software is very difficult to use and I am lucky to get one piece of paper scanned before it tells me that the scanner is not connected to the computer. Then I have to re-start my computer so that the scanner will recognize it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Epson v39 I like the convenience of plugging directly into my computer. What is a disappointment is that it doesn't have a place to title the picture as soon as I scan it. I have to hunt for it among all my other pictures, then rename it. (If there is a way to do this, please let me know!)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little scanner I love it! It's so nice and compact and scans beautifully. The only caveat is that I didn't care so much for the software that it comes with. I've been using Vuescan by Hamrick for many years with my other scanner. So I got another version for this scanner, and now my scanning experience is perfect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Scanner with a Lot of Capability (Windows 7 & 10) Once you get the very good included driver and software apps installed and read the users guide scanning is made easy. The buttons are very handy and are only active after the Epson event manager is installed. The scanner (about the size of a 17in. laptop) is made well and the USB power makes it convenient to move between computers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good scanner -- mediocre software I am happy with the scanner; however the Easy Photo Scan software is mediocre, lacking in features to see an overview and adjust -- I was also very disappointed to find after I began to use the scanner for larger pages that there was no software to stitch for Macs -- This is not mentioned anywhere: the box, the literature, the store labels -- Caveat Emptor!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light, intuitive and quick Very happy with this scanner. I use it with four different devices and take it with me when on business trips. It is good to have the flatbed, makes document management so much easier than using a tablet or phone, especially with receipts. I had been using another type of portable scanner in the past, but since it was not a flatbed, often got distortion when the doc did not feed properly. Highly recommend.

The scanning is by far greater then my previous, so I'm very satisfied with my new one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for a low end scanner I did a great deal of research before purchasing this scanner and, after using it, I was not disappointed. Epson has a solid reputation for its quality and performance and that was evident from the very first scan. The scan produced was actually better quality than the print I scanned from! This scanner is compact and easy to use and set up. The use of a USB connection to power it also adds to the scanners simplicity. I use this to travel with to do scans so all of this is ideal. This is an ideal scanner for someone on a budget or needing something that is portable and I would highly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Epson F39 Perfection I bought this to replace a Visoneer which was not compatible with my new computer . This scanner proved fairly easy to understand the basic functions and serves my needs well with no difficulties and is pretty easy to operate, scan the item and direct it to the proper folder I also have an Epson XP 300 series all in one printer which performs well. I haven't explored all the possibilities yet, but the manual is not far away. Very sturdy and well built product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Only focus right to the glass. My old Epson printer can't get software for it any more a Perfection 1200U. So I looked for a new model and found this one. It's good if only it would still focus about 18 inch from the glass. I like to scan things to zoom in on them. They are not all the way flat and the things that are just away from the glass are not in focus. Like just about paper thin and out of focus on this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Scanning Simplicity! I needed a lightweight scanner to use to scan photos and other research materials while traveling. This one certainly does the trick! I downloaded the software to my laptop, plugged in the USB cable, and launched the scanner program in less than 5 minutes. The test scan was sharp and fairly color accurate. This scanner doesn't match the quality of my Epson 10000 XL but the XL can't go on a road trip.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good scanning features I bought this to replace a printer / scanner that had finally failed. I like this as a stand-alone unit. The problem with the combo printer / scanners is usually the printer part dies and you are stuck getting another unit. This time, I decided to go with a stand alone scanner and I'm glad I did. It copies JPEGS and PDF files just fine for my regular use. I've been using it for several months and have no problems yet. It was easy to setup and it might be a little slower than some but I like it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good value When I first started using the scanner I had to push the scan button multiple times to get it to scan. I tried switching ports but that did help. I thought it might be isolated to my laptop so I tried the scanner with my desktop and had the same results. I had not used it for a month or so with my laptop and when I did, it scanned with one push of the button. Can't explain that anomaly. Maybe a Windows 10 issue. Overall, I am pleased with it's performance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Epson V39 Scanner Software I have no idea of how well the V39 works. The included CD was a mess. In spite of two wasted hours, I could not even register the scanner and the downloaded driver did not even recognize the attached scanner. The only app that seemed to load properly was the Stitch. I have just downloaded the driver on-line and have successfully registered. Now I will connect the scanner and see if it works. ***** After one Test Trial, the V39 and downloaded driver seem to work fine. Now to download the on-line manual & apps that should have been on the CD!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does not work out of the box Tried another USB cable and verified that the port was both supplying power and transferring data with another device, reloaded the drivers twice, restarted the computer, did the registration and still will not turn on. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good scanner for a novice or casual user. I bought this scanner to upload a stack of paper documents that I have been keeping until I had a chance to store them safely. This scanner does a good job (but rather noisy). My computer is eight years old and required some adjusting before the documents could be read clearly on my computer. The scanner was very easy to set up and has simple operation, with clear instructions and helpful screen prompts to guide you along. It gets the job done, and does it well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Plug and Play I primarily use this scanner for document scanning. The scanner is very easy to setup and use, it also has a removable hinge for scanning books. Rated 5 out of 5 by from null The scanner was pretty easy to set up and use right out of the box. The instructions were clear and it didn't take too much time to download the program to run it. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Features for Price I am going through 50 years of photos and scanning them into my computer where I will organize and burn to disk so I can destroy the originals. I find the editing tools really help clean the pics up. This is a one time project, but may take a year to complete. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dud I this scanner about a month ago. Took it home and set it up. Registered online. Scanned some documents and pictures. About 50 pages total. Went to my computer to print. What a mess. None were legible at all. Mostly black blobs. I tried my other printer, same thing. I took it back to the store with sample copies and they replaced it with another one. Went home and tried it only this time on a smaller scale project. Same results. Adjusted settings to try and tweak it. Better results but still not working properly. This time I would get 90% of a picture and the bottom of the picture would run into black streaks. Naturally I tried both printers to rule out that being a problem. Took it back to the store with sample copies again. They gave me a store voucher instead of my money back. Wasn't happy with that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stopped working when I installed the Epson Software update I was pretty happy with this scanner for a couple weeks. Then Epson released a "Combo Update" that I installed. Since then, I have not been able to get my Mac to recognize the scanner. I've tried reinstalling the old and new drivers with no luck. And every time this stupid "register your product" pops up. Finally decided to register to see if not skipping this step would finish a driver install. Bad time for it to drop me into a "please review this product" screen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not so easy to use! I'm an experienced computer user (50 years) and wanted to replace my simple to use scanner with another simple to use scanner. I'm quite disappointed! Besides the fact that it chops a bit off the sides of the original (no reason for this), it is not easy to use otherwise. It's auto on when you plug in the cord, but it also shuts itself off when the computer sleeps, so you have to disconnect and reconnect to use. And the quality of the scan leaves some to be desired. Though you have the option of configuring the options, it's not trivial and it seems like there should be no reason to touch these for my simple "copy this doc to store". But it was cheap. Just wish I had had more than 2 weeks to return it to the store.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Affordable, General Purpose Scanner Had it for a month or so. Using with a Mac running High Sierra. Recognizing this is Epson's entry level scanner, the software is really substandard, at least with the Mac. Very slow to launch. Very slow to scan. Very basic functionality. Struggled for aweeks trying to get the hardware buttons to work. They will only work if the ISA driver (required for Image Scan to work) is removed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everett scammer for the price This scammer is a great value and does an excrement job scanning both photos and documents, and direct uploading to Google photos is awesome. My only complaint, and the reason I a not giving it a four star rating, is that it's program is not set up in an intuitive way, making for a lot of guesswork and trial and error.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! This scanner is perfect in every way......very quick and easy to set up, and also very easy to use. After spending 2 days trying to get my all-in-one printer to scan (it's supposed to do that), I finally gave up and went to the store and purchased the Epson Perfection V39 scanner. It worked perfectly! The scanned results are clear and excellent quality, and I already feel like I've gotten my money's worth out of it. It's a great value for the money spent!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from larger size reasonable price While I already had a multipage printer/scanner for other work, this allowed my wife to scan oversized scrapbooks to convert them to digital form. The larger scanner surface accommodates slightly larger than an 8.5 x 11 inch page. Its low profile allows you to scan large scrapbook pages on a flat table, having the open book hanging over the left or right side of the scanner glass. It did an excellent job of color scanning. And the price was right!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great scanner for the money I purchased this scanner to use at a family reunion, as some relatives were bringing albums of old family pictures. The scanner worked great, and the fact that it drew power from the laptop meant a great deal as we were in an outside pavilion with no electric power available. It was easy to use and my only problem was that I had a hard time getting the icon to open the scanning software.\ The scans were perfect and the old pictures came out a lot better than I hoped after scanning! If you need an inexpensive scanner that can run off a laptop, this should be your first choice!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First one was broken, replacement is mediocre I bought this back in January and realized I was having issues with some blur in the scan result – Epson replaced it for free, which was great, but I had a monster of a time installing the new one. I spent 45 minutes on the phone with Epson tech support, uninstalling and reinstalling the new scanner. We finally got it, but the scan quality still isn't as good as it could be. And as a professional artist, it's really important to have a crisp scan! This is a fine scanner if you need something cheap and details aren't important, but it's nothing to brag about. I would have returned it if I could.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Epson Perfection V39 Scanner I bought this scanner at Staples in Crossville, Tennessee about 2 months ago. I enjoyed it very much and it was very easy to setup and use. The scanner works really well, and provides excellent reproduction of the photos and articles I have scanned. The scanner was priced very reasonable. I have been scanning photos of the past into my Mac computer and putting together a movie of all the photos with music in the background. I would strongly recommend this scanner to anyone that needs a scanner. Excellent reproduction.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Having trouble I am having trouble with my scanner. All I need to do is scan a time sheet and email to my workplace. The scanner saves my document as a tiff and I need to save as jpeg. I cannot attach the document to my email unless it is a jpeg. I have tried to save as but cannot find how to do that. I'm sure it is something simple but until I figure it out I cannot give this product a high rating and recommend .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Instructions unclear I purchased this to digitize photos for my Mother's Celebration of Life. It was confusing to learn, and we used the Scan button on the screen to start the scanner. Unfortunately, while it saved the pictures in our computer, it would not allow the images to be saved as a jpeg file. They could only be printed, not saved. After working for an entire day to capture photos from 50 scrap book albums, we had to start over, even after consulting a computer expert which told us that was our only option. So we wasted a full day of work when time was short. We learned you had to use the buttons on the scanner itself to scan the pictures so they could be saved as a jpeg file. I hope they fix this problem by either warning users that the pictures can only be printed when using just the scan picture icon without first pushing the buttons on the scanner itself, or just fix the software so jpegs can be created when using the scan button on the computer screen. Once we figured out how to use it, the pictures came out great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight, versatile, and won't damage old photos So far I’ve been very satisfied with this scanner. I wanted something to scan old family photos before they deteriorate. These being fragile, I wanted a scanner where you manually place the original on a plate, rather than the kind where the original rolls through. I wanted something lightweight, and not too expensive. I wanted it big enough to scan an 8.5 x 11 in. doc, but in a minimum of space. I also wanted to scan in JPEG format so I could edit and e-mail then easily. This fits my all my needs. So far I have only tried the “professional” scan setting that allows you to chose resolution, type of original (color, grayscale, B+W, etc.) and I used settings recommended by a relative. They came out pretty good. I also like that it is powered by its USB connection to my laptop, so I do not have to hunt for yet another open electric socket. Unplugging the USB turns it off. The software loaded fine and it is fairly intuitive to use. I haven’t yet tried the included Scan n Stitch software for scanning projects larger than 8.5 x 11.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight and easy to use I am very satisfied with the V39 scanner. It is portable and easy to store when not in use. Setup was fast. The simple USB plug-in is convenient and the automatic border detection is handy for scanning photos of different sizes. One-button scanning makes the job fast and efficient (about 36 seconds per scan) which is appreciated as I'm digitizing over 1,000 family photos! I also use it for full-size business documents in my home office. I am also very pleased that the product has a 'stitching' function as I plan to digitize a large 80-year-old survey of my parents' home.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small, efficient, great photo reproduction I purchased the Perfection V39 just a few weeks ago, but I've had sufficient time to put it to the test. I'd been temporarily entrusted with 270+ family photos and needed to scan them quickly. The reviews on the V39 were quite good, and Best Buy had one in stock. Installation & setup were fairly straightforward; within ten minutes, I was scanning the first set of photos. With a dpi range of 50 to 4800, you can go from thumbnail to ridiculous in short order (600 dpi proved sufficient for the kind of work I was doing). The scanner's abilities were limited only by the quality of the photos being scanned. On some of the photos, I did notice that the colors were a bit too in-your-face when compared with the originals. However, you can easily switch to 'Professional Mode' and adjust accordingly. All in all, a great little flatbed scanner which surpassed my expectations. If you're in the market for a compact flatbed scanner which will create faithful reproductions of old family photos, I think you'll be very pleased with the Epson Perfection V39.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Photo Quality I have been waiting for a while now to purchase a new photo scanner because I have had trouble finding ones that really get the picture quality. Especially with very old photos. I was thrilled once I started scanning my grandparents photos from the 40s to find that it looked like the actual photo itself! I LOVE this scanner. It's a little slow, maybe 15-20 sec per photo but you're not going to get a high quality scan with a speedy scanner. It's only needed a reboot once so far, and that's after I had been scanning photos for almost 2hrs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This Scanner Can I needed a portable scanner that I could use for my documents, artwork and notebooks. I have had this scanner for well over a year now and I use it often. It works great and the software is easy to use with different settings like full-auto and a customizable home feature. I love the PDF feature, it's as simple as pressing the button on the scanner and it starts making a PDF - I can add as many pages as I need to. My only issue with this scanner is that the full-auto feature doesn't always pick up red and pink so it might scan my red or pink document as black and white by default - but easily I can switch to home setting and get a beautiful colored scan.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Warranty I was assured by Best Buy that Epson only offers a 14-day warranty on the "Perfection" scanner. Remember when companies offered at least a one-year warranty, then we had to settle for 90-day warranties, now only 14 day warranties that practically force the consumer to purchase the extended warranties from the purchase location. That is incredibly sad and beneath the standards of what Epson products used to represent.

So far I've only done a handful of photos, but loved the ease of setup, the small space the scanner takes up on my desk, and the clarity of the photos. I can see more after scanning them into my computer than I can in the originals! Only problem is that one scan does take some time, but this will be a process....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy Scans for Less I have had this scanner for about a year after deciding I wanted a simple black and white laser printer rather than an all-in-one. After several disappointing experiences with scanners in all-in-ones, I decided to buy a separate scanner. It works better than any all-in-one scanner I have owned and was inexpensive and works seamlessly when I plug in the USB cord to the USB hub attached to our iMac. No separate power cord required. I am very pleased with this scanner and Epson recently upgraded their software to 64-bit so it will work with OS 10.5 Catalina which began rolling out to Mac laptops and desktops in October 2019. Very happy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use I bought this scanner a month ago to scan all the old photos I had prior to digital cameras. I use it with a MacBook and found the downloadable software instructions very easy to follow. I had a problem with the software after a few weeks but after googling the issue, I found I just needed to update my MacBook. Now it works beautifully!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So Far, So Good, But Really Noisey! The scanner has worked well in my first few uses but the whining sound from the scanner motor has me concerned on how long the scanner will continue to operate. My Epson Perfection 2400 Photo scanner makes a little noise but no where near as concerning as that from the Perfection V39 scanner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compact design; does the job There are some trade-offs with getting a small scanner like this, but it performs well (good scans), is easy to store, and is reasonably priced. It's louder than I would have imagined, but that doesn't really affect things since it isn't run often. It's speedy enough.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing quality scanning pictures! I bought this scanner to scan old photos of my parents and grandparents. Some are from as early as 1901!! The quality of the scan is amazing. Some pictures I can see features and people I could not see in the faded originals. The editing program clarifies even more. I always refer to myself as tech challenged but this scanner is so easy to set up and use. I have already recommended it to multiple friends.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from NO! I bought the scanner about four weeks ago from Staples. Great size and scanning surface. Something's not working right though. Might be the Mac interaction. Don't seem to get the interface that I see in the tutorials. The one-stop buttons on side don't work. I have to pull the scanning through the application. Often, I can't get a response from it at all, so have to restart computer and try again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Poor product I bought this to scan in old family photos. The scan resolution is fine at 600dpi and takes about 20 seconds to complete, which isn’t bad. HOWEVER: First, the scan bar is not aligned with the sides/edges of the scan area. If you place a photo securely against the top scan edge, you would expect the edge of the photo to be scanned fairly close to horizontal and not need to fix the rotation in other software. Nope, it’s clearly noticeable and I do have to fix all my photos. Second, for some unknown reason to me, I will scan a photo and it will come out looking slightly like a bow tie (the miffed of the left & right sides of the photo are pulled in).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked Right out of the box! Epson Perfection V39 Scanner Let's get Real! Of course I had to update the software to have it work properly with Windows 10. Don't you update your software? After that: WOW! Great portable scanner! I am Truly Amazed at what I got for the price! The features of this portable scanner, compared to what I would have had to pay for another brand, are AWESOME. You CANNOT beat the quality, or ease of use. I just connect it to my laptop, and I am Ready To Go! Of course I would recommend this scanner to anyone that needs portability, high quality, multiple features, and small footprint in their work space.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for Small Projects Epson Perfection V39 is an excellent and reasonably inexpensive option for simple color and black and white scanning functions. Epson scanning software can be a bit clunky and very slow for long text documents, but it works for small projects. It is lightweight, and somewhat flimsy and fragile, though. It is not designed for commercial use. I would recommend one of the larger EPSON scanners with more features for those who have a lot of scanning to do or for those who want to scan negatives and slides as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gets the job done. Software is bad/useless. Gets the job done. Software is not good at all for what you would need a scanner to do. Outdated. Better off using PC or Mac software that comes with your computer. Scans sorta quick. Not as quick as expected. Great quality scans. Loud motors/gears. It’s not the best but I would say it’s the best “flatbed” scanner you can find on the shelf.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Epson Perfection V39 Scanner I bought this scanner two weeks ago when my old HP scanner died. In that time I have scanned many pictures. I find this scanner noisy, slow, "unfriendly" - when scanning multiple pictures, it often either kicks me out or just scans one or two of the pictures. It is not uncommon to press the scan button and receive a pop-up box saying it can not connect to the scanner - I press the scan button again and it works. Considering whether to return it as using it is not a pleasant experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Features for Price Point I wanted to digitize some old photos and for the price and quality for the device it works great! You can scan 3 photos at a time and it is smart enough to distinguish the different photos. For scanning documents it isn't quite as smooth in doing multiple pages as it keeps erroring out after a few pages and says error and gives the option to start over again or to save what has been completed so far. As it is simply backing up documents I have saved larger docs in multiple files. I have only taken 1 star off however as it does better than other options for photos which is a huge plus however would not recommend for purely a document scanner with the aforementioned errors. I like as well the compact and lightness of the unit and be left out on desktop without being out of place. Overall for occasional non daily use of scanning and something quick and easy would recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great scanner for old photos I bought this scanner for a family history project where I had to scan a lot of old photos in various sizes. The scanner is basic but works well for photos. The basic software on Full Auto Scan is great; you can scan up to four photos at once if you leave enough space between them. The buttons on the front do not function as advertised; it seems necessary to use the software app to make the scanner work. The advertised 4800 dpi scan is not configurable in software, the best I can get is 1200. The Scan to PDF option does not work as advertised. It is possible but clunky to scan multiple documents into one PDF. The software and manual seems to be common to a variety of Epson scanners, so some portions do not make sense. The software CD provided was out of date, and required a download of new drivers from the Epson website. For this scanner, use the basic software package option on the website or you will load a lot of other software that does not work with this scanner. The scanner itself is great, software only okay, user manual almost useless. Epson could do a much better job of the software and manual.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Space saving flatbed scanner I have a small space and cannot handle even a small 3-in-one device. I already have a small older HP printer and together with the new Epson flatbed scanner (which can be stored away easily) I can scan, copy, and print. The glass flatbed with no feeder allows scanning of colored or penciled artwork and will not grab or bend your original, unlike the portable Brother bar-type scanner that fits in a briefcase (I purchased then returned it).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does just what you want it to I had a huge scanning project. My old printer/scanner has a weird glitch where you can't scan multiple pages into a single document. This machine does that beautifully and quickly. My only complaint, the disc they sent to download the software was useless in terms of getting the system up and running. I finally just downloaded it on-line, and it worked like a dream.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Purchase Ever! I bought this scanner thinking that I would just be my family genealogy better organized. This scanner has changed my life! I set up the scanner and was moved to an exciting new world. Without leaving my home, I emptied out 2 file cabinets, organize our genealogy, keep those letters from relatives that have passed, plus my children’s “I made this picture for your at school” art. My son suggested getting a scanner….I found this Epson on Amazon and decided it was the one I wanted. It is easy to setup with my computer and I got started. Then stopped, called my son and told him to lose the “old” scanner he was using. I am buying you the best scanner in the world! I “Sang” the praises of my scanner and he was more than ready to toss his in the trash. When any of my friends mention the paper world they have I tell them about my Epson Scanner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Decent Desktop companion scanner It's not without it's quirks and problems but overall works satisfactory. It sounds like dragging a stick through sand when you first get it. But after some significant use it smooths out a bit and does not sound so bad. It will drop the USB connection and you have to unplug it and to reset it, this does not happen often and so is manageable. Quality of scans are satisfactory. Wish it was 48 bit color and not 24 bit color. Overall it works fairly well and is very convenient physical size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compact Scanning I'm enjoying this scanner. The old one became useless when Microsoft updated Windows 10. This scanner use s similar software, and I comfortably scanned from the get go. Only one design change I'd make: add an on/off switch, so I don't have to unplug it from the back every time. That switch could be integral with the use cord.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile scanner I have an inexpensive multifunction printer and there scanner has very limited capability, 600 dpi. I took on the task of scanning all of my family's old family photos, somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 photos. Because of the man hour investment and posterity, I wanted good high resolution digital copies. This scanner allowed me to produce 1200 dpi color, 24 bit digital copies. It has a setting for black and white photos in a great 8 bit grayscale. The quality of my digital copies is worthy of the time I am spending handlng all these photos and will allow my family to print food, high quality photos. Compact and portable to let me setup wherever I want to do this work. I sm pleased with the 'bang for the buck' I gotten out of this scanner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful little scanner "Perfection" is a good moniker for this little workhorse. I am still happily discovering all of its many features, much more than I'd expected for the price. I bought it because in these COVID-19 days of businesses being closed or restricted, one can't just run out and get copies made like in the old days (NOT so long ago) and I needed many copies of many forms, and being retired, I didn't have access to my graphic design work equipment any more. I am quite pleased.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great scan, noisy though I generally scan artwork and the Epson V39 does a great job with the color. However, it is super noisy, more noisy than the old Epson scanner I have. Also have a HP scanner / printer - and though it is not a good scanner / printer, you can turn the sound off. Great feature.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Useful and light I bought the device two years ago. With the software upgrade the scanner software has gone from clunky with a learning curve to easy and intuitive. I tend to store the scanner away when not in use. Being light makes this a simple process. The scanner does what it is supposed to do ... hence a 4.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unexpected Features I bought this simple scanner just to upload a lifetime of photos to my PC before they fade out sitting in boxes. The scanner has more features than I imagined. I can put 4 photos on the scanner bed and it will scan one at a time AND straighten them. It will also enhance faded photos. I have not learned more about other features, but this little scanner has saved me hours of work, not to mention saving old faded photographs. I love this scanner!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from autoscan mode works good I've been using this scanner for about a month, scanning old picture albums. It works well if you use the autoscan mode. It did not work for me when I tried to use the professional mode and changed some scan parameters. My PC could not communicate with the scanner in this mode. Also, the cd that came with the scanner did not load due to windows10. I had to load from the epsom website.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Crossed fingers I've had a Perfection 4490 for years and it was wonderful. Two weeks ago my computer stopped recognizing it. After three days of downloading, switching and reconfiguring I gave up. I ordered this V39 and started to wait for delivery. The next day, magically, the 4490 started working and for 5 days I was scanning and happy. Yesterday UPS brought this V39 and I figured I'd have a backup. This morning the 4490 went on strike again. I just downloaded the software and haven't even plugged it in and I get a review request. It is smaller than my previous device and I only hope it works as well, that's the most I can say at this time. I would expect a request for a review would be issued after I've had a chance to at least plug it in; but, this is the best I can do at this time. Fingers crossed...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Decent scanner Purchased about 2 weeks ago. Instructions are minimal and leave a lot to be desired. Scan quality is good (about what I get using scanner with multi-functional printer) but need to make adjustments to get that (defaults to 100 dpi resolution which is useless). However, did a few photos and the quality, with adjustments, was much better than with printer scan. OCR function with the scanner does not work with my older version of Word (defaults to Word Pad which is awful). Disappointing but understand. Worked with Customer Service but couldn't resolve (very nice to work with and helpful). OCR function, using older version of Word (with .doc extension) will not work with this scanner (Epson might want to include that in description to alert potential buyers). All in all, a decent value for an entry level type scanner. Takes up small amount of space, so it's convenient.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Scanner does the job I have scanned 3,000 pictures since I bought this scanner. It really does the job very easily. Problems have been minor, namely tops of pictures have been reduced, so I had to rescan by placing picture in the middle of the glass and a few pictures with very little color scan black and white, no solution for that problem. It really brightens old pictures. Cleans the photo and even focuses some photos to some extent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent scans! This scanner meets all my scanning needs. My only dissatisfaction has to do with the CD that accompanied it. I have an iMac computer. The CD was for nonApple PCs. Thankfully I was able to figure out how to use the scanner on my own -- which says something about its ease of use. But I didn't have important information that I only discovered on line just now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Portable with quality output. Bought one 6 months ago. Loved it's light weight and easy handling, but worried about being it being too fragile. Sure enough knocked it off my desk with a casual sweep of my forearm rendering it unoperable. Bought 2nd one 2 weeks ago; trying to be more careful about its placement. So, high quality scanning, very portable and somewhat fragile. Maybe a removable base with some weight would protect it from inadvertent user movements.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fell short of expectations I bought the Epson V39 scanner in March to tackle a project of digitizing decades worth of old photos. I chose this model for its affordability and because of recommendations found in a PC World article. I read many reviews and found that there may be some issues with its operation but decided to buy anyway. While using I found that the scanner was inconsistent in its operation. Its connection to the computer seemed to come and go. I spent over an hour on the phone with the tech call center going through multiple deletions and reloading of the software and computer restarts. Eventually it worked again. But I found that after several scans it would once again stop operating. After reading various reviews, I concluded it may have to do with Windows 10 compatibility issues. I'm no techie, so I cannot confirm that, but it was a struggle to get through the project which entailed nearly 1000 photos! While the scanner was frustrating at times, I was far enough into the project that I decided to keep the scanner and work my way through the stops and starts. When the scanner worked it did a fine job. Good quality files were produced and automatically sent to my Pictures folder for further organization. Several nice features allow for editing photos and/or altering the scanning properties, but I found that the auto mode was sufficient for my purposes. When it worked it performed fine for my needs. But unless you have a lot of patience and time on your hands, I would not recommend buying if using Windows 10.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A well performing scanner at a reasonable price I bought this a few weeks ago and am quite pleased with it. It is compact, the software is reasonable. The scanner gets power from the USB cable that transfers data between the scanner and the computer. To turn it off, just unplug the USB. I have limited USB ports on the front of my PC, so I purchased a USB extension cable just unplug the scanner USB from the extension to turn it off.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Good Scanner for Photos and Documents Epson Perfection V39 scanner is compact and easy to use and set up. The use of a USB connection to power it also adds to the scanners simplicity. I use this to travel with to do scans so all of this is ideal. I am pleased to see that you can adjust the compression settings, as well as storage locations. You put several photos on the glass, it scans them and separates them into separate JPG files, which saves a lot of time. It will auto-remove dust and scratches. This is an ideal scanner that is easy on the budget. I would highly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not an "Oversize" Scanner A fraction of an inch in one direction is not oversize in my opinion. I purchased on Amazon after searching for legal size scanners. The only size information in the product description was "oversize" with no qualifier. After receiving it I discovered that it was actually letter size. Apparently, the inclusion of image stitching software was why it qualified as legal size in Amazon's lame search engine. Unfortunately, no such software was actually included. And, I wasted over a hour trying to find the missing software because Epson has made it impossible to access phone support using their phone menu -- you can only get a recorded message saying to look online. I only reached an appropriate support person by selecting the phone tree option to purchase new products and then being rerouted. In spite of my one star review, this is probably a good letter size scanner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from so far so good! Very portable because doesn't need a power cable, simply turns on when plugged into your computer. The downside of that is that a wire connection is required, but to me the portability outweighs. It's super light. Does not crinkle pages at all when they are larger than the bed. Picks up light pencil. A little loud but oh well. Overall very happy with the scanner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great with one exception Purchased to scan old family photos removed from album books. Scanned well over 300 photos saving them to my Windows PC with no problems. Color and black & white photos came out very well. I did not use Epson color correction, I used Adobe Elements to edit photos. ONE PROBLEM, I was unsuccessful scanning and directly saving to Google Photos, I kept getting a script error when trying to log into Google Photos. Was unable to solve the problem at either Epson or Google web support. I did not pursue it further, because it was not a function I really would use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Feature-rich scanner I bought this unit to replace my 15 year old flatbed scanner. YES. Fifteen. When windows XP was the operating system of that time. I use the scanner once in a blue-moon, if I get a hard copy document that needs to be signed. SO, it happened that I had documents that needed to be signed and scanned ( i offered to take a photo and send it, but they declined, IT HAS TO BE SIGNED). I pulled out my flatbed scanner but I couldn’t find any drivers that would run on Windows 10. Pulled the trigger on this scanner. Thie scanning is fast. Done in 15-20 seconds. PROS: 1. I like the PDF stitching function, where you can scan multiple documents and merge them together as one PDF. 2. The automatic document alignment is a nice function as well. 3. You can also scan multiple pictures and the scanner detects and saves the scanned photos separately. CONS: 1. Needs a longer USB cable 2. USB-C connectors not microUSB

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not Bad I’ve scanned about 8K pictures running in full resolution in auto mode. Scanner hardware works good but software is glitchy sometimes only scanning part of the photo and sometimes not scanning all the photos on the platen. Surprising old B&W photos and crisp color photos look great. If the photo is out of focus, scanning does not improve it. Photos with color fade due to age also turn out pretty good. I’m scanning on a new Dell computer with SSD drive. I guess it takes about 4 minutes to scan 4 photos on the platen. Photo processing is almost instant. I tried to run on a notebook computer and quickly abandoned that because the processing and writing time took forever.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Do not buy if you want to scan with it The light bar immediately got caught on the power source ribbon cable at first use. No indication of any adhesion failure or cable slack issues around the light source. Must be a design defect. Does not deserve one star.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great can quality however very limited Windows 11 support This photo scanner scans in great quality albeit slowly. I like that several pictures can be placed on the scan surface and they are automatically recognized and saved into separate files. Please be aware that there is limited Windows 11 support. Epson provides a whole software suite with this scanner, such as OCR. I was only able to use one of the software EpsonScan with Windows 11. However this software is sufficient for basic photo scans.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bargain copier Generally I will scan one or a few pieces at a time. This one does an excellent job. Only requires a USB port for both power and scanning signal. Very easy to carry around. This is slower than a copier that has a brick for power independent of the USB connection. The latter would be a smarter buy for those who do a lot of scanning at one sitting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Scanner This scanner is very easy to use. You can scan multiple pictures at one time and the clarity is great. I did my Mother-in-law's 99th birthday CD in Photos Microsoft and this scanner allowed us to capture her life from age 6 to 99. I would purchase this scanner again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from OS X compatibility I have not been able to make this work with OS x. 10.14.4, even with most recent driver update. I will continue to try and make it work, but it doesn't seem to register with the OS. It seemed a very good price/quality trade off, but so far I am unable to test that value.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile, robust, light weight, easy to fine tune. I've been using Epson products exclusively for 25 years. The V39 is the latest addition to my stable. I needed a lightweight portable capable of high resolution images. This easily fits into my 'go' bag along with my 15" laptop. Software is superb, handles difficult tasks with ease when you take the time to learn it, and scans quite fast. At only a hair over 3 lbs. it's ideal for traveling with a high quality scanner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Low Cost Good Image Quality I own a collectible business and we use these scanners to scan the items we sell for our customers. These little scanners fill the bill. Lightweight, easy to use, and produce a good quality image. My only complaint is they don't last very long before failing, but hey, they are cheap and disposable. But we use them much more than the average consumer does. For normal occasional use they should last years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EASY! I just received my Epson Perfection V39, and I will say it's about the easiest installation on any office equipment device ever! I've yet to put it to use, but if the machine works as easily as it installs, many thumbs up!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Waist of Money I bought this and used it only once. When I tried to use it again, when I most needed it, it was not working; it doesn't even turn on. I went to Best Buy, and all they told me is to call Epson because I had been over 14 days from the purchase date.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast! I've had an Epson scanner for many years and loved it. I purchased this scanner a couple of months ago and love it. The technology has come a long way. No waiting for warm-up before the pre-scan or scanning. The color correction software is great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This scanner was a complete dud. After spending an afternoon studying the online videos and manual, downloading drivers, etc. I tried to scan my test photo but the V39 simply died and could not be revived.I brought it back to Best Buy for an appropriate burial.I won't be purchasing other Epson products.A zero star rating would be most accurate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Slow, slow, slow We had a similar style of scanner made by Canon that operated much more quickly. This scanner is very slow. First it loads, then it does an overview scan, then to scan you have to highlight the area, and finally it scans. It is tedious and I would return it if I could.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Budget Scanner With Good Resolution For Docs and Pics I picked this up at an office supply store because my previous MFP bit the dust and needed to scan documents and photos. It works as advertised. The only cons are manually feeding each page and the quality of the materials-physical build is a bit flimsy, could break if it gets bumped or dropped.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Frustrating to get recognized, great when it works. The initial setup went fine and my computer recognized it right away. The second time I went to use it, I had to reboot my computer multiple times and download updates multiple times for it to finally be recognized and the power light to come on. It's very frustrating to get through it first being plugged in, but once it's working, it's easy to use and decent quality scans. Still debating whether I am going to keep it or return. I bought this brand because I have an all-in-one Epson at home and bought this to bring to my mom's to help my mom scan all of her family photos. Frustrated!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple and effective when connected! I was looking for a straightforward scanner for my home office to use with my iMac. When connected, it is fairly quick and very simple to use. Some minor problems (but annoying) to get it to be recognized and start-up without rebooting the computer or disconnecting/reconnecting the usb cable. Not sure what is causing it but as indicated, when connected it is a great little scanner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An OK but not great product I use it to scan documents as opposed to reclaiming or working with pictures/photos.. It is more awkward to use just as a document scanner because the prompts are aimed at the picture application.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for scanning old photos! I purchased this to scan all of my mom's family photos into the computer and it works great. The picture quality is great and the only negative part is that its fairly slow. Often I would scan pics while I did other things on my computer since waiting for a 4×6 image can take roughly 30 seconds a piece.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Limited Linux support I purchased the Epson Perfection V39 scanner thinking that Epson had full Linux support for it. It's true they provide drivers and libraries which you can install, but the scanner is not recognized by the "simple scan" utility my preferred scanning program since I like to scan a lot of irregular size things likes receipts, etc. The Epson tool was lacking in features like producing multi-page PDFs or some other issue that it should have been able to do. I tried XSane which recognizes it, but is unable to do custom cropping for whatever reason, which I think is a XSane bug and not a scanner issue. Lastly, I found gscan2pdf which can fully use this scanner AND in many cases can provide OCR versions of documents. With this I find the scanner to be quite useful and capable. My rating reflects that it's a good scanner and useful, but that the Epson Linux support is minimal and haphazard. I like that it requires no external power supply except for USB. However, I don't like that because of the limited Linux support the buttons on the scanner are useless.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well Works as well as I had hoped. I planned to use the scanner for a family heirloom project in which I am converting many picture albums into digital form. Best feature is that if you place several small pictures on the scanner screen at one time (I did as many as 8), it will record them as 8 different photos. If you try to do that, you have to allow some space on the scanner bed so that the scanner can recognize them as individual pictures. If you crowd the pictures, the scanner will see them as together. You do not have to cut them and crop them separarely. Worst feature is the time it takes for scanner to work - thus 4 stars instead of 5. But altogether, I'm glad I chose it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceeding my expectations I am using my scanner to make scans of black and white photographic prints and the resolution and quality are exceeding my expectations. I would highly recommend this scanner to anyone else in the market. The price is also very competitive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Typically glitchy You buy a cheap scanner, you get what you pay for. The quick scan feature is nice, much easier to use than wading through the software interface. But it frequently tells me my computer has lost connection with the scanner, which doesn't make sense because the message pops up when I've pushed a button on the scanner--if there's no connection, how does it know I've hit the button? You have to reboot the computer before it works again. The trick seems to be not to rename the PDFs before scanning more documents, which is a pain but at least I'm not rebooting all the time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It’s become a great paperweight. Bought it to use with my Mac. Initially it worked fine. Then Apple updated the OS to Mohave and the thing has been dead in the water ever since. Tried downloading the supposed new drivers from the Epson website. Unfortunately two of the “new” drivers are still on the old 32 system and haven’t been updated to the 64. Contacted Epson support and got nowhere. So now, it remains nothing more than a paperweight. Maybe someday if Epson gets their act together it’ll be operational again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great features I like this product. The software was easy to download (I am not tech savvy). The product easy to use. The best feature is scanning several items at once but they are scanned separately by the scanner. Great if you have lots of photos etc to scan.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from significant deficiencies I bought this a month ago and I am really disappointed that there are major deficiencies. I used a previous scanner which gave me a direct simple choice of copying, saving to a folder, or EMAILING the image! I assumed yours would do those basic procedures. I would trade it in a heartbeat for a brand that provides these simple options.
