Works
I frequently camp in areas that are miles away from cell service. And I have a new driver kid at home going back and forth from college to work. And I am a bit paranoid. These three facts combine to cause me to routinely leave my camp in the evening and travel however many miles to cell service so I can call home. Now I don't have to do that. I recently spent 10 days in the Olympic Peninsula, with no cell service. Even with the rain forest thick canopy cover, and being at the bottom of a steep canyon the in-reach was able to connect without problem. The rain, constant fog, and high humidity didn't seem to cause it any issues. Considering the limited sight line to the sky because of the canyon, and no open visibility due to the thick canopy cover and fog, I was entirely impressed with the in-reaches performance. Now I can stay in touch with my family no matter where my travels take me.

Great Features Awesome Functionality
We purchased this inReach Mini 2 for work, given that most of our fieldwork occurs in high alpine wilderness or often in canyons where phone service is limited. I used the unit for a week-long camping trip for work and felt secure knowing my wife knew I made it back to camp safely every night. That sense of security is excellent when you are 13 miles into the backcountry. Additionally, being able to use the tracking and waypoint features was phenomenal. It took me a while to get the hang of it, but it works pretty smoothly directly from the inReach or on the Explorer app. However, I often struggled to get my location to show up accurately on the app, so I had to use the inReach itself to mark and pin locations, a tedious task on the small screen. I need to play with it more to learn how to use the unit effectively.

Great features! Not intuitive!
I've been wanting to get an emergency GPS beacon as I hike and backpack regularly. After researching, I decided to purchase the inReach Mini 2 for its features. In typical Garmin fashion, the UI is absolutely frustrating and archaic. It is not intuitive and even after watching their 1 hour webinar, I'm still somewhat wary that I will be able to use some of the features easily without spending some time trying to figure out how to use it all over again. I'm also quite upset that they changed preset messages to non-customizable presets which was one of the main reasons I purchased the unit but didn't realize they changed those options. For those two things I removed 2 stars.

Perfect way to keep track during a 100 mile race!
I got the mini as a way to track my race as I was on course, and for my crew to be able to adjust as I ran. Because it updates so often, my crew was able to predict when they needed to be the aid stations which made it so much easier for them. In addition, it ensures you stay on course when the markers aren’t as easy to follow. I just hope the companies that make nutrition/hydration vests design a unique pocket to protect/carry it vice using tape of some alternate method to secure it.

Brought the mini@ with me backpacking the Northville-Placid Trail. Designated a wilderness area with an extensive canopy layer it is difficult to get a signal with the mini2 rendering it of limited use. I was however, able to get a signal going out on one of the lakes (and no canopy cover.)

Now that I understand how to use it…..
Picked this one up for a specific long distance outing. In haste, I failed to set it up correctly. Heard about it afterwords -
Somewhat confusing, but in fairness, there’s only so much room on a small device. One should expect to use the same buttons for several different options. No different than the watch we all wear.
5 ?? because of Garmin’s customer service. These guys were patient and walked me through everything, making sure I was up to speed on what it can do before ending the call.
Make sure whoever is tracking you has the Garmin Explore app downloaded, otherwise your tracking won’t work on their side.
The next run was fluid, and nope - didn’t hear about it when I got home!!!!!

Great battery life
I purchased the Mini 2 mainly for SOS and potential rescue. I had the opportunity to do a group hike recently. Due to weather and illness, the group chose to split and opt off the trail. Among us four there were 3 Garmins - my Mini 2, an ETrex, a GPSMap, and the 4th person had a Spot device. Thankfully, we were able to maintain communication with the Garmin devices. I docked one star because my 6 month-old Mini 2 failed completely. It took THREE weeks, several hours on the phone with Customer Service, and TWO replacement devices, and two trips to UPS to return items, in order to get a working replacement device. I only hope if SAR is necessary that the service is quicker.

App Functions lost when message limit reached
The mini-2 and Garmin Messenger app worked great on my first trip in the wilderness until my limit of 20 messages was reached. At that point the App user interface lost most functionality (as I didn’t have cellular connection). It was my understanding that I had continued full use of my mini-2 even after the message limit was reached, and this it was quite frustrating.

Works well, but needs competitive plans
I’ve used this multiple times in the backcountry. I’ve used it in heavy tree areas and inside my sent. Messages went through every time. Sometimes it took a couple minutes to send. Thankfully I haven’t needed to use the SOS feature. I would give 5 stars if the monthly/yearly plans were more competitive. But with the Motorola device and upcoming phone with satellite and other competitive devices, Garmin should offer competitive monthly messaging plans.

Great tool, lousy manual
Spent a week in Wabakimi Provinicial park in Ontario. Our outfitter required a tool to check in daily. I purchased an InReach Mini. Learning how to use it was mainly trial-and-error with lots of error. The Quick Start Manual was helpful, but did not explain in detail. I went to the manual on the web. Unfortunately it only repeats the Quick Start Manual. I wanted to synch my smart phone and the InReach, but never succeeded. So I slowly, oh so slowly typed messages on the InReach. With a good manual I would rate the InReach as a 5.

Great product but expensive/complicated pricing
The inReach Mini 2 seems durable, well put together and easy to use. I purchased this product to use for a Mt. Whitney backpacking trip, but have only used it a couple times on some shorter practice hikes.
Overall, I am very satisfied. My only complaint is that the complex and expensive pricing leaves more to be desired.

Security in the Backcountry
I had considered purchasing a Garmin inReach for a couple of years, after researching the advantages/drawbacks of satellite communicators, and having seen/spoken to several hikers - especially female, solo hikers, as I am typically - who had many positive things to say about their devices.
I purchased and used my inReach for the first time in early August 2023, and was so grateful for the sense of security it provided. I didn't have to worry about establishing a satellite connection through my phone in case of emergency, because I could link to the network through my inReach before hitting the trail and knew it would hold strong all day. I and my family had peace of mind knowing that I could message them at any time, with or without cell phone service; and that they could track me and knew I was safe, even from 300 miles away. It was especially gratifying when my day ran unexpectedly long, and I was hiking out at 10:30 pm, several hours later than anticipated. My backcountry excursions take place almost exclusively during the warmer months, so the option to suspend/re-activate service is also a major benefit!
There was a bit of a learning curve during set-up/operation, as I familiarized myself with terminology, the location of certain features, and how the device interfaced with the Garmin Explore app. However, the Garmin site and other online resources were incredibly helpful, and I carried the user manual in my daypack, just in case. Overall, none of this was a significant detractor from the many benefits of the device. I definitely, and without hesitation, recommend it!

Works if you work hard enough to figure it out
Works but not at all intuitive. Getting to show tracks on Explorer was super frustrating. I eventually posted a question to a large online hiking group. Large numbers of users said they never got to work. I did eventually find Explorer -> device -> setting to enable showing track. It I was “on” just like it should be. I turned it off. I turned it on. Now it works. Buggy software.
And what’s up with needing two apps? Just integrate them for goodness sake!
So yeah, it works. But lots of room for improvement.

In today’s world of friendly interfaces for electronics, this device seems decades past due. Having to go to several apps or websites to input messages, and to be so limited and difficult to set up and use, seems ridiculous. I love garmin, but you guys really need to up your game here. PS. To block reviews that are negative by saying there are ad blockers, when the review goes through just fine with five stars, is deceptive.

Nice size for hiking, but accuracy is questionable
I got this a month ago for an Appalachian Trail section hike. I liked the unit overall, but it has it's quirks. It's nice that it can be used as a stand-alone unit, but it really shines when used with the smartphone app. My only complaint is that sometimes the accuracy is off, and the unit consistently showed more miles tracked than what was actually hiked. One night, I left the unit tied to a tree branch that had a clear view of the sky, and used the smartphone app from my tent. In the morning, the unit showed that I had traveled TEN MILES overnight. Unless I was abducted by aliens, I'm at a loss to explain this phenomenon. The inReach Mini 2 would consistently read 12 miles for every eight miles traveled. I don't know if the overhead canopy of trees made this happen, but it's quite inaccurate at times. It has a habit of creating zig-zag breadcrumb trails on what should be a straight path, this happens also during clear skies in open areas. It's unfortunate that my Apple Watch and iPhone are more accurate than a GPS-centric device primarily designed for precise navigation.

Compact inReach
We had the Montana 700i to have both inReach and mapping but found OnX on the iPhone much easier to use for tracking and mapping and the 700i is too bulky to move from vehicle to vehicle (we’re in Montana where cell signal is spotty so need the inReach). The Mini 2 provides our inReach access and extends iPhone messaging capabilities when out of cell service. And the battery life is amazing.

Tracking Ocean Passages
We purchased Garmin inReach mini2 as our way to text family & friends, as well as having a tracking method of our journey as we sail around the world. We used it for first time during our passage from Stonington, CT to Bermuda in Nov '23. Unfortunately we hit some bad weather, multiple storms during this 7day passage. The text & tracking worked great. You have to use phone if you want to text. Too long and cumbersome on mini. We were very disappointed in weather information provided. Example - Garmin in our location had forecast of 10kn wind with 3ft seas. We were in 25kn and 10+ FT seas. We didn't realize how inaccurate the weather was until 6days into our passage. This was part of why we got into some severe weather conditions along the way. I don't know if mini is right for us during sailing offshore. We unfortunately have to keep device and make the best of it.

Great So Far
This is a recent purchase so I don’t have a lot of time with the device just yet. I’ve wanted one for quite a while as I tend to frequently hike alone in remote areas or places without cell towers. Since my purchase I’ve been on a few hikes in such areas and have given the inReach a decent trial by sending messages, preset (check-in) messages, tracking and other such features. Fortunately, I haven’t had to use the SOS feature. Thus far the device has worked without incident in conjunction with the Messenger and Explore apps on my iPhone. Very pleased with the integration between the apps and the device and the ease of sending/receiving messages (the Messenger app). I’ve had the device in deep forest and was surprised to see messages did send in a reasonable amount of time. In open terrain the send rather quickly. Battery life seems to be very good as well and I do like that’s it is USB-C rechargeable. I looked at the other satellite communicators (Defy, Messenger, Zoleo) but decided the inReach better suits my needs and have not been disappointed with my purchase. In my case it was a wise purchase to add another level of safety to not only my outdoor activities, but to those of others as well. I would certainly buy again.

I just got back from hunting up in Alaska where there was no cell service. This gave me the comfort of knowing that if anything happened I could reach out and get help. Also, it allowed me to stay in contact with my love ones back home. If you’re venturing into the back country, this is a must. My son uses one also for when he’s out exploring in Arizona and Utah and it’s nice to know where he’s at.

Peace of Mind
I weekend backpack & day hike in the Colorado mountains year round and also do a yearly week long section hike of the Appalachian Trail. Some of the places I hike have no cell reception. This year I had 2 incidents in remote areas (no cell service) that made me question what I would of done if something went wrong. I also want to start out by saying that I always carry essentials in case of an emergency. The first incident was in late afternoon in a remote area of mountain on a rocky trail were a loose rack caused me to twist my ankle to a point where I thought I broke it. Luckily it was not broken and I was able to wrap it and hike out the 4 miles to my car. The second was an encounter with a Moose, I was rounding a bend in the trail and feeding on bush was a moose during rut season, probably 20 yards from me. The moose looked up and me and continued eating but I thought to myself what would of happened if it charged me. As a result of these incidents I wanted a way to communicate to others if I had no cell service and found myself in an emergency situation. I purchased an inReach Mini 2 several months ago and I can not tell you how much that has changed my mindset when I am out on the trail. I am able to check in with my family, along with a map of where I am and also have the peace of mind that if I get hurt that I have a way to get help. I would recommend it to anyone out there whether you have cell service or not. It also has many great features and a way to 2-way communicate.

Got It For Scuba Diving, But keep it in vehicle a
My wife insisted I get the inReach Mini 2. I got it specifically for Scuba diving. She saw a couple of Scuba blog posts about divers getting lost at sea. The most important reason for getting the inReach is if you get separated for your dive boat. And Murphy's Law is true, it does happen. And even being out on the ocean on any vessel, I have the inReach with me. I also take with me Skiing, in case I crash off a trail where no one may see of notice me. And even in my North New Jersey location, there are plenty places not so far out that cell service is limited. So I have the inReach in the car all the time.

Less user friendly than original InReach Mini
Using the original InReach was a breeze - easy to switch between users between my husband and I, and easy to create custom preset messages that worked perfectly. Got the Mini 2 to replace the lost device and just getting it set up was a huge pain, hard to switch between people in the same household, and no more custom presets. Garmin wants us to spend more on messages I suppose. Idk but somehow they just made it worse and far less user friendly. Will be looking to sell and find a different device.

Peace of mind
There are lots of things that you need to have a successful trip in the backcountry. You don’t need an inReach. The peace of mind, however, is more than worth the price. A few hundred dollars upfront, and a little money every month is well worth the peace of mind, for me. I’ve never needed it. I think I’m pretty good at taking a conservative, cautious approach to my activities. But life happens. Someday I may truly need it for myself, or someone I run across on the trail. And the peace of mind knowing that I have what I’d want if that moment comes is worth the cost.

Piece of Mind
The InReach Mini 2 is something I've been looking for to provide that next level of safety and communications. I sometimes ride my motorcycle alone, or go fishing/hiking in remote areas. Being able to let others know you are alright or track your location in remote areas without cell service is priceless. Having a backup option to our cell phones as a way to communicate with my wife if networks are busy or down was also a deciding factor on my purchase. The one thing I've noticed is the battery consumption seems to be more than I would have expected, so having a backup energy source to charge the device is recommended in some scenarios.

New software still needs improvement
I bought the Mini 2 to replace my Mini, which is absolutely essential equipment on any outing, including road trips.
The Mini 2 has a better interface (on its tiny screen) but it is disappointing how confusing it remains. Main complaints are:
--Apparently Bluetooth is active all the time? I could not find a setting to turn Bluetooth on or off. I believe the new Bluetooth LE (Low Energy) mode means it uses almost no power, so it's not a problem. But Garmin needs to make it clear that Bluetooth is always on. Or explain where to turn it off. (Hint: when you choose "Device" in Messenger, if you don't see "Presets" and "Tracking" and "Message Check"--your Bluetooth on your phone is not turned on.)
--"Unread messages" is frustrating. There is no way to DELETE ALL MESSAGES on the Mini 2. Instead, it requires 9 steps to delete a single message! Really? And that's even though all messages have been deleted in Messenger (which DOES have the option to delete all selected messages). Why doesn't the Mini 2 delete all messages as soon as they are deleted in Messenger?
--The multiple satellite networks sounds good, but I haven't really noticed any better connectivity while hiking in Utah canyons, although sometimes yes, it does manage to send a message very quickly. It may be a feature you don't realize you have because you may have connectivity in places that just one satellite would not reach.
--Pecking out a message manually on the Mini 2 is improved somewhat but it is still an excruciating exercise in near futility, only to be used in dire circumstances, such as when I got a new phone and discovered--in the wilderness--that the Bluetooth could not connect. I had to completely reset the Mini 2, a detail I didn't know until I got home and googled it. My sisters could not understand the gobbledygook message I sent them. :( (Lesson: don't send gobbledygook. Take the time to go back and spell words correctly, no matter how painstaking!)

Got this so my family can track my adventures and for safety. It replaces a competitive product that did not seem to track in as timely a manner and does not have as many communication/message options/capabilities. I would recommend to a friend.

Bought a month or so ago so still learning but seemed to work pretty good. Was able to get updated accurate weather both hourly and next 2-3 days. Was able to send text messages and locations. Battery held up well.
Only issue is that others did not also have.

Allows Me To Do More
I just returned from my first backcountry trip since my wife gave me an inReach Mini 2 as a gift. I went into the Flatside Wilderness in Arkansas and I was without cell service for almost four full days. This was my first chance to try out the device. First and most importantly, the inReach Mini 2 worked as advertised. So with no technical issues, I was able to just learn the device. The inReach Mini 2 is small enough to be a non-factor in terms of pack and gear weight. I kept it attached to my shoulder strap with the Garmin-provided clip most of the time. Based on reviews I had read, I had low expectations for the process of typing a message directly into the unit, but it was not bad at all - brought back some memories of the early days of text messaging. The messaging allowed me to keep my family aware that all was well and that allowed me to plan routes without worrying about finding a spot to get cell service at some point during the day, as I have in the past. This gave me the ability to explore and access new parts of the wilderness area. I certainly did not utilize all the features of the device. I did tinker with Waypoints and Tracking - both features were intuitive and helpful. Knowing that if things took a bad turn I could call for help validated the purchase of the inReach Mini 2. But I found in my initial run that it can do a lot more than just put out an SOS. After one outing, I view my inReach Mini 2 as a really valuable and important piece of my backcountry kit that gives me access to more places.

Connectivity!
This is a great upgrade from the Mini 1. Staying connected to home while I'm out in the wild is important feature. The Mini 2 connection to the phone is more stable and seems to to pick up the saddle lights quicker too. Battery life is really a plus also. The Garmin Explorer app is an upgrade over Earth Mate also.

Very useful tool
I bought my InReach and used it during our late deer and elk late hunt. Got it for piece of mind after having some heart issues. Mostly, it’s awesome. I have been unable to get it to connect with my computer (Mac) but have it linked to the app on my phone. We tested it with me way out in the back country and it performed just great! It may not save your life (but it might!) but it will make it easy to find me if the heart does give out, verses looking for me for weeks.

Fully Meets Expectations
I have had zero problems picking up satellites. Text messages go thru quickly. Battery life is awesome and the Freedom Service plan offers great flexibility so I don’t pay much for service. It’s small, light, and rugged. The Explorer and Messenger apps really enhance the functionality. I tether it to my running pack or backpack with a shoe string and I’m off.

A Necessary Tool and EZ to Use
I bought this about three weeks ago, and I began testing it immediately. In one test, I went out of my cellular service area in deep forest and I was able to text a buddy who was 200 miles offshore in his boat in the Atlantic (I was in the Olympic Mtns during the test) So, this device works great! Moreover, the inReach Mini is really easy to use either with or without a smart phone. I do find it best to use the device with my smart phone just because its faster. I bought the annual service subscription, and it works well for me. Finally, my work team does work overseas in high risk areas. The next time they are on an overseas job, each of my team members will have one!

Unreliable, didn't work
I bought the inReach Mini 2 in October to run a 100-miler. The primary use case was to provide more reliable tracking for my wife/friends. I loaded the gpx file and that turned out to be the only thing that really worked. The live tracking link didn't work for any of the contacts I preloaded. Really disappointing given the price point for such a specific tool to fail in its specific use case.

So far so good!
Tested it in a national park. Battery dropped about 5% within the first 10 minutes, but then it only dropped about 1% every hour or two. Definitely needs a clear view of the sky or the battery will drain like crazy. I sent a few messages successfully too!
Pretty happy with my purchase overall. Especially with the SOS feature (hopefully, I never have to use it).

Horrible, horrible experience!!!!
My wife bought this for me to help keep intouch and as a safety device since I often atv, hunt and snowmobile alone. Initial set up only took two college grads, one with an engineering degree, 4 hours and three phone calls to customer support, to complete. Messaging and mapping was another three or four hours and several calls to get right. Quick start manual is useless and the downloaded users' manual you should be ashamed of. I was initially excited to get it out and use it, but after all the frustrating time and effort to get it working and the several contradictory recommendations and information during phone calls, I don't even want to carry it! So frustrated I'd like to throw it in the river or better yet gift it to someone I don't like! I rate it a solid .02 out of 10.

Device is great, app could be better.
The Mini 2 is great. It does exactly what its advertised to and gives my wife and I peace of mind while I'm in the forest and out of cell phone range. My only gripe is that, when using the associated Explore app, all road/trail detail reverts to a borders and highways map beyond a 4 mile wide screen when zooming out. If I want to see where I'm at on a system of forest service roads i have to constantly zoom in and out to see the road then see an overview and then try to remember where each road takes you (4 miles can be traveled pretty fast in a vehicle). Also the satellite image only works when zoomed in to an 8 mile screen. Sure thats fine for hiking but if you're using it to discover terrain to hunt in the national forest its a small window.

Good device, Apps not great
I'm the "tech guy". When friends and family have questions they come to me. Even so, it took two days of screwing around with the device and apps to get it working. Basically it wouldn't pair the device to the app on my phone. Without being paired the device is useless except for SOS. No ability to use the check in feature. No contacts for text messages. No sync or update for the device.
The subscription prices are about double what I think is reasonable, but if they can get away with it I'm sure they will. The activation and reactivate fees are just plain price gouging.

Hard to figure out
I’m finding this a little hard to figure out. The item selected in the menu doesn’t necessarily line up w the “ok” button, which has been confusing. I’m also finding it a bit confusing just trying to use the basics like sending location. Some of the menu choices are a little putzy which isn’t ideal when you’re out in the cold trying to maneuver through a bunch of screens. I got it primarily for the sos and that looks easy. I’m sure I’ll figure the rest out with time.

I hike almost everyday with a pack of dogs and some of them are too heavy for me to carry if god forbid something happens, but now I have the peace of mind that I can call for help if I need. Great features when under clear sky
Love the purpose and functionality of the Mini 2 but doesn't track every 10 minutes when driving in a car since there is no clear sky view (not a big issue). Under the sky, works very well.

Extremely disappointed from
Don’t bother. It’s worthless!
For peace of mind as a single woman, I bought this for a solo backpack trip through Arizona. It created more problems than it solved. It always showed inability to find satellite so checkin messages arrived late (sometimes hours late). This happened at my house when testing and in the open desert. This made my family members extremely worried. Sometimes I had cell service and could text and the In reach still had bad satellite connection. The battery lasted a max 4 days and I did not use tracking to see if that would help. It didn’t. This also happened when testing at my house. It also drained my phone battery through the app because of its constant searching for a satellite. Returned it because it’s too expensive to work worse than cell service and require constant charging. The statement that it can last 30 days is a complete misrepresentation.

Feel So Safe!
The texting to family works great when I’m up in the mountains by myself, which is almost every weekend! My family and friends are now much more at ease and I definitely feel safer! I received it just in time for a weekend car camping trip in the mountains. The setup was extremely easy, and I’m 60 years old! I started out with the $25 monthly subscription because I would rather have more text messages than not enough. I had it fully charged on Friday afternoon when I left, I left it on until Sunday night when I got home and it was still 70% charged. I’m extremely satisfied with my Garmin inreach mini 2 and the peace of mind is priceless. I thank you Garmin, and my family thanks you also!

Reliability and features, batt life needs help
My work requires that I have the most reliable tools especially for communication. The apps make sending and receiving messages easy. The weather forecast is super handy and accurate.
Biggest issue I’ve found is the battery life. They advertise 14 days and blah blah blah… with all the tracking feature shut down most I get is 4 days. Maybe if I shut it down completely I’d get 14 days.
I’d recommend the mini 2 for those that want the communication and the backup navigation features.

I bought this to give my wife some pie of mind as I backpacked 100 miles around Mt Rainier on the Wonderland Trail.
It lost power like water through a sieve - it was down to 80% after one day, and this was an 11 day hike. On day five I shut it off to keep the remaining battery power in case I needed to send an SOS (if it would actually work...?). Thankfully I did not need that feature.
"Failure to send message" was the constant reply to attempted message/camping site updates.
It did keep accurate time

The size and weight and battery life are really good and the plans are more affordable than I originally thought.

Great piece of mind for all outdoor adventure!
I purchased this a few weeks before a trip down the Baja peninsula. Although I didn't need to use it, I felt comfortable being miles from anything but cactus knowing that if something did happen, I could get support if needed.

For Safety Sake
I purchased the Mini 2 for an upcoming hunt trip to WY. The initial scout trip proved no cell reception in this area, I knew, for safety reasons I needed to purchase some type of satellite communication device. After researching, it was clear that the Garmin inReach mini 2 was what I needed, plus another member of our party had a Garmin inReach mini and I knew we would be able to communicate to one another should we get separated. I highly recommend this item. It worked as it should. I was able to text home to other family members as needed and communication between inReach to inReach, within our hunting party, was invaluable.
I watched several hours of You Tube videos for tips and hints of how to use this item. Very pleased with this purchase. Looking forward to having this security available for our next hunt trip to MT.

Invaluable Peace of Mind
I bought my InReach Mini 2 just days before going on a hunt in Kyrgyzstan. I was in the Tian Shan Mountains, which may not be the most remote place on the planet, but you can see it from there. The ability to text home every day, as well as having the peace of mind that I could get help if needed via the SOS, was invaluable.

Straight up Reliable
I had the InReach mini from day one. I bought the new one for USB-C (one lesss cable) extra battery and backtrack. Mostly USB-C charging. Didn’t need it much. My wife and few friends I keep in touch with while back country certainly love it.,
I wouldn’t travel without one. I use the phone ap mostly to communicate but when my phone finally dies I still have a screen and a ton of preprogrammable messages I can send.
Used this one for the first time for 2 weeks in October in Yosemite. the only communication that could even be called remotely reliable.
I record tracks as well and use the garmin ap to share with people I know the route I’m taking and real time where I am.

Invest in safety!
One of the smartest investments I’ve made in my hiking, trail running journey. This is peace of mind guys. Really simple service plans, easy to use, and great customer service. I don’t know how I hiked without one before. Your cell phone can only do so much. Once service is out of reach you need another way to stay connected. Invest in your safety and get one of these devices.

Using for aviation and a great item to have!
I purchased this for flying general aviation. Not nearly as high as the big airlines but high enough that there isn’t any cell phone service. While the plane is loaded with other Garmin gps devices, this is an extra layer of redundancy and it makes it nice in the event that my wife needs to get ahold of me.

Essential equipment
The Mini 2 works exactly as advertised. The only shortcomings I see are: There is a short delay during transmitting and receiving as to be expected with any iridium satellite device. The battery life has been shortened significantly under tree canopy and in cold conditions. I have no issue paying the asking price for the device knowing Garmin makes rugged stuff and backs their warranty. However the service plan is 25$ a month to utilize the basic functionality of this unit including the important waypoints. That is unfortunately out of reach for majority of people. A lot of competitors are releasing a similar device with a much cheaper service plan. I truly do feel that if Garmin were more competitive with the plan pricing others would jump onboard. Hopefully they will make adjustments in the near future. Otherwise the Mini 2 is the top of the line as far as hardware goes in this size and form factor and I would not hesitate to recommend if you want the best of the best. If you can afford the price of the service plan of course!

Great Backpacking Tool
I recently upgraded from the original Mini because I ready battery life was better (which proved true, but I still bring a roll-up solar charger). They are essentially the same durable body/makeup. I also felt that messages were sent/received with better efficiency and with less direct sky visibility. The new APP is better. Peace of mind for my family is ultimately the goal, and that goal is achieved with this model (and the precious).

Easy and light to carry - but works great!
I bought the Mini2 to replace an older InReach device. The new unit is very small and light, which is nice for remote hikes, etc. However, it pairs nicely to my iPhone with the Garmin Messenger App, which makes it quite easy to use. I had a bit of trouble getting it registered, but one call to the Garmin Support Center solved the problem. I'm taking it on a trip later this month to a remote part of Canada, so will really test it out.

Awesome way to stay connected!
I purchased after talks with friends with similar devices. I loved my decision to go with the Mini 2 as opposed to the original. The messenger app is very easy to use. With good clear signal messages are quicker than I expected. One thing to make sure is that you need a clear overhead for best use but even with limited ceiling it works but with longer response times. I was literally in a cellular/data/internet dead area and stayed connected with family for 7 days. Battery would last all day. I would charge with battery pack at night and by the next night would still be approximately 80%-85% remaining.

Bought this specifically for hunting in the mountains with no cell service. Worked great. I was able to stay in touch with my wife and let her know I was doing ok while I was up there. Sending location messages takes a little while and the device doesn’t always pull messages and has to be forced occasionally but all in all it’s a great tool and super handy. Super Functional, just a little confusing
Really glad I bought this unit. It is a must have for me as a solo traveler. There is a bit of a learning curve and it's confusing as to how the unit syncs with both the app and the website, but overall the functionality is there and it's solid. Before taking this on a multi-day adventure, take a short trip out of town & out of cell service to familiarize yourself with how it works so that you aren't learning how to use it when your already out in the bush. It's also worth noting that it's GPS connectivity in a dense forest under thick overcast skies was really really slow to connect and get a signal and pin your location. This is a little concerning but it sounds like there is no perfect GPS in all situations. I would still recommend.

Good features but plans not clear
I bought the Garmin InReach Mini 2 for an extended canoeing trip. It functioned well and was helpful in route finding and getting weather updates. The Garmin explore app on a synched device is fairly easy to use. Three issues preculded a higher rating: 1) The menu seems unnecessarily complicated. One can either page down from the home screen to access widgets like navigatiion or weather, or go through the menus and access those same functions. However, the same information is not available through both routes. Oddly, information such as wind speed and direction are not available on the InReach screen, only in a paired device. 2) Paying for the subscription, I believe I shouldn't also have to pay extra for "premium" weather forcasts. 3) The subscription plans and the process by which one might suspend the "Freedom plan", are not clearly presented.

Very reliable
I had another satellite communicator from another company that was very unreliable. It would not confirm that messages had been sent which was not comforting in the back country. I went on a 7 day backpack trip and ended up buying this InReach Mini 2 the night before because I had such unreliable experience with the previous device. This device worked perfectly I came into some really bad weather and felt very comfortable that I had this device with me and knew that it would work perfectly. Battery life was as advertised as well.

Mini 2 Maintains An Essential Kit For Adventuring!
The newest inReach Mini 2 continues to deliver on the perfect balance of weight, durability, battery life, and functionality that I have come to expect, love, and rely on over the years. Paired with the Garmin Explorer App, this is a powerful piece of equipment that allows you to go off and explore off grid locations, but remain connected to the love and support of those back home. It provided spot on weather forecasting, tracking, and messaging throughout our approach and multi peak climbs around Mt Kenya the last couple weeks and over two weeks only required one charge which when allocating battery recharging to camera kit is a valuable detail not to be overlooked.

Stay connected but bring power source
I have used my In Reach mini in the western Pacific (Palau and Guam) and Korea. It will track me on foot, in cars and even on light aircraft. Sometimes it will take up to 5 minutes to acquire satellites.
The only reason that I didn’t rate it higher is that the battery life is only one day with heavy usage and 2 days with light usage
Also the Garmin Explorer App is finicky about staying connected to synch

Took it on my Devil's River trip in TX. There were other members of our team that had different types of SAT communicators. As soon as the weather got bad and clouds came in all of their coms could reach out to our outfitter for pickup except the inReach Mini 2. Clouds and weather didn't phase it at all. I was able to reach the outfitter in minutes and get us out. Battery life was impressive, most definitely could've used it the entire trip on one charge. Rugged and waterproof 100%.
One thing I wish it had was a scroll or easier way to scroll.

Good device, need to learn intricacies.
My inreach mini 2 worked well in a remote forest area, with the options in the explorer app being handy when needed too. With that said I had one instance where I had sent a message before falling asleep and woke up to that message still trying to send. I assume this was the result of me losing 30% battery in one evening. Also, our group had a zoleo too, and there were a few instances where although on the same network the zoleo was able to get messages out and the inreach was not.

Gold Standard For a Reason
It's small, lightweight, and probably the most important piece of safety gear you can bring with you on adventures. For the past 12 years I had a Spot (pictured for size comparison), and had no complaints. The inReach Mini 2 is a huge upgrade though. More interactive with text messages, navigation, tracking, waypoints, smart phone integration. This thing will do everything you need to avoid having to make an SOS call. Often, people just get lost when they stray from a trail and this will help steer you back on course. It's nice knowing that the SOS feature is there if you get into trouble, though. The Iridium satellite network is fast and responsive and it's nice to know I can use it globally. I can't say enough good things about the inReach Mini 2.

There is a learning curve with the inReach, at least I needed a couple test activities to figure out the features and functions ... I'd recommend any new users plan on simple activities in cell coverage to confirm with folks tracking you that everything’s working correctly.

Really needed this for peace of mind
Actually got this for my wife after a day hike got complicated and I had no cell service. I find the service plans a bit complex to parse through (that's 10 messages per MONTH not per lifetime of the device....) and was unhappy to have to buy yet another subscription. Heck I now have a subscription on my bloomin doorbell for Pete's sake. But this is different. Having a friend who broke an ankle on a day hike and had a 12 hour rescue to get her to the road, I think this is going to be worth it. Still exploring and trying to understand features.

Peace of mind!
I received my InReach Mini 2 a couple weeks ago. Set up was extremely easy! I have it with me on my trip to Sedona AZ and thankfully haven’t had to use it, but have great peace of mind while out on the trails many of which do not have cell service. I consider it like a fire extinguisher in that I hope I don’t need it, but if I do it’s there.

Nifty device, works as advertised
Bought this ahead of a multi month trip to South America, with some parts on land and some on cruise ships. I'm now 3 weeks in.
It's a small device, even smaller than I expected from research. Easy to carry/stow. Charges fairly quickly. USB-C is great, as it helps reduce the number of cords.
GPS acquisition time is pretty quick in good (clear overhead) conditions. And if given enough time it can get a fix in some but not all poor conditions (indoors, etc.).
I was able to send check-in messages from the cruise ship everywhere I tried. These went to family and included my location. So they could follow my progress. No charge for the check in messages.
When out of cell coverage, paired with my phone, this let me track position on both the Explore app and a nautical navigation app C-MAP. Which wouldn't have been possible with just the cell phone.
Got what I expected. So far, so good.

Love the safety!
I mainly got this because I roam remote areas alone, sometimes without a cell signal. I like its tracking ability, although I have a tracking app also on my phone. My friends can view my whereabouts on either MapShare or the tracking app, which I like. I use my phone as a topo mapping device, with downloaded maps so phone signal doesn't matter. I carry the little Mini-2 everywhere. I am still on a learning curve using the Explore app, but getting better.

Excellent product for remote traveling!
I purchased the inReach Mini 2 for a diving trip to Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. Bikini is very remote and there is no Internet connectivity. I used the message feature, along with the messaging app on my iPhone, to communicate with family back home. It worked great! Also, being so remote I felt comfortable having the SOS feature if needed. I also used the waypoint feature so friends and family could keep track of our location.

Extremely confusing and hard to learn how to use.
I activated my Mini 2 yesterday in hopes that I could use it today on my solo horse packing trip. It is the most complicated device. And the website tutorial is so incomplete and simply skims over each and every important issue. I hope in time I can figure it out on my own but today it was an expensive ornament hanging off of my saddle. Garmin spends more time on ascertaining their marketing reviews than on useful information on how to actually use the device.

Works as advertised
I spend time in remote parts of the desert, and I needed a way to report my location and status to my family on a daily basis. This device does exactly what I need. In addition, it has an S.O.S feature that I can use in case of emergency. Just remember that when purchasing this device, that you will also have to sign up for a satellite service plan as well.

I have spent several hours looking at YouTube tutorials and playing around with the device. I recently used it on a 6 day hike on the Superior Hiking Trail. The base functions seem solid but there is little to no explanation on how to use tracks, waypoints, Routes, Collections....etc.

Useful product with great features
I have used the unit once for a gravel road bike race to test it out and the tracking worked very well. My daughter was able to follow my progress, even noting when I stopped along the way. I will continue testing but so far my family is happy I have it for my more isolated location adventures.

Best satellite communicator
If you’re in the market for a satellite communicator, you’re probably deciding between the messenger and the mini 2. I ultimately went with the mini 2, and I couldn’t be happier I did. Firstly, the interface is the same as my Fenix 6, so there was little learning curve. I love having a usable screen and buttons, independent from my phone. Secondly, the form factor is perfect for putting in my running vest or backpack and having the antenna pointed at the sky. Overall, just a fantastic device with a great app-it works perfectly! In my opinion, the screen and shape make this the perfect inReach.

Dependable and a Game Changer!
My son and I both bought the inReach Mini 2 and used them for an elk hunt high up in the mountains. We were able to connect and communicate without any issue the entire time we were gone. During the hunt my mother had fallen and was injured back in town. My wife was able to communicate with me and kept me updated regarding the injuries. This was a Game Changer - We would recommend anyone who is out like we were to get one ASAP!

Gave me the confidence to go alone
I bought this in September for a planned solo Colorado elk hunt in a wilderness area. Honestly I don’t think I would have gone alone without this technology as a safety backstop. Probably half of the hunters I encountered in that wilderness area had the mini2. No regrets, will definitely use more in the future

I have used a competing brand for years and took for granted the cumbersome interface, poor customer service, etc. New technology, right? Well the InReach Mini with its phone apps has made me wish I made the switch years ago. A great product AND great service. (More important)

Functioned Flawlessly
Purchased this Mini 2 for backcountry adventures recently. First week long trip completed I can report this unit functioned flawlessly with my cell phone and the Garmin Messenger application to contact family and hired support. Messages were received within a few minutes of creation and sending. And responses were received by me at the same pace. I am completely satisfied with this new version of the Garmin Mini satellite communication device.

Decent
My husband was running a days long footrace where there was no cell service, so we had a mini inreach to communicate. It worked pretty well except we experienced some issues with messages just taking an hour or under before each of us got them to read. Again it could’ve been so many others were using them and because we were far out there. Battery life can go kind of quickly, not too bad. It’s much easier to type a message within the messenger app too. We did pre load some messages for ease of use too. I like the mini. The only other thing I’m mad at is the garmin customer service. When I got home I tried to suspend my service freedom plan and there was some kind of glitch and I got charged another month that should not have happened, I then used the garmin chat for help the man said he couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t suspend my account but that he could see there was an issue. The man said he would put in a request for payment refund on the extra month I got charged , but then the payment posted and now nothing . No news from garmin as I was promised no refund.

Great units and a lot cheaper than satellite phone
I think the unit itself if great, but the Garmin web site and Owner's manual needs a little work. It was hard to find Garmin's various rate plans and other info on the web site. The Owner's manual needs more detail. Try to find someone who has one to walk you through using it. It worked well in the mountains and we were in the snow. You can print the Owners manual, which is nice, so you can take it with you since you'll probably be out of cell range if you're using the inReach.

Great for backcountry hunting in Idaho
I bought this specifically for solo elk archery hunting in Idaho, and was very pleased. I hunt in backcountry units without cell service, so the ability to keep in communication with family via satellite was great. My only complaint would be that the weather app is not very accurate for remote locations at higher elevation. It pulls weather from nearby towns, but was often 30 degrees off. Wind and precipitation forecasts were obviously off as well. If it were to use the NOAA latitude and longitude forecasts i would give this unit 5 stars without a doubt.
