Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Gen 2 Docking Station is rated 4.00 out of 5 by 73.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly Disappointed with a Very Expensive Dock Considering the expense for one of these, we have considerable connection issues. It doesn't work very well with the X1 Extreme that is supposed to work well with it. We had to return for a replacement when the first one wouldn't power up anymore and the replacement still had the same USB connection issues with peripherals. Very disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not worth it. Have had several problems keeping my computer and device connected when I come back from a meeting or don't start my computer at the office. Connectivity is pretty rough

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much better than 135w version Fixes issue with shutting down, like the 135w dock had. Still glitches at least once a day where the external monitors will disconnect, but it's for about a second or 2 and then they are fine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smaller is Mightier I was going to give it 5 stars however I have had one issue, so I couldn't. Overall, I have only had this for a short time, but I was able to set it up pretty easliy except I did have to have my IT consultants set it up on my 2 monitors. I love the smaller size of this as I just came from using a larger Dell Docking for a larger Dell laptop. I like having the USB and headphones on the front for additional access. I also have a monitor arm for my wo monitors from Human Scale that has a plate for USB and speaker jack. My one issue was actually using this with my jawbone speaker, I recieved all sorts of feedback and static on the speaker when it was plugged into this and I never had that before.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock Gen 2 Works fine once you figure out how to set it up. But overall, it's too confusing to hook up and too expensive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thunderbolt dock The unit allowed me to connect two external screens as well as a keyboard and mouse to my Workstation. Works flawlessly, however the included instructions were not clear and I had to research a little on the net to find clearer instructions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful BRICK Lots of Power- This is a power supply / dock that is useful to connect a high power laptop to a dual monitor setup. Ask Lenovo sales if it is compatible with your hardware. It's expensive and worth every penny. Ensure it is compatible with your hardware.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not compatible with most laptops Even though the sales department helped me select it and checked compatibility for me, it is not compatible with my x1 carbon gen 5 . Wasted a lot of time with support

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dock will not come out of sleep mode Does not work well with P1 V2. If the laptop goes to sleep, the dock will not bring the desktop back up with out shutting down, unplugging and reconnecting. This is super annoying. Otherwise it works fine. The price is very high and the mobile workstations only work with this dock. These docks make me want to move away from the Lenovo workstation platform completely.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good dock for Lenovo USB-C laptops. Works great with P53, wish Lenovo would include better instructions for the power connections. 230w power supply needs to use the splitter to power the dock. Not obvious since the instructions show the dock powered directly by the 230w power supply.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not Completely Reliable I have purchased several of these new Gen2 USB-C docks and I really like the features, but the reliability just isn't there. A couple of them have had issues with the Ethernet connection to the network (not related to IP pass-through), and another with the monitors coming back on after going to sleep. I have updated both the drivers and the firmware of the docks but this doesn't seem to help. I wish these were more reliable because I do prefer them over the old style mechanical docks, but am hesitant to purchase again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Way better than HP This dock works so much better than HP’s. It turns the computer on and wakes up from sleep. It runs 2 4K monitors seamlessly. I’m so pleased with this docking station.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unusual Docking Station Not the usual docking station that I am used to. But on the other hand, being tethered by a cable rather than having the laptop firmly attached is refreshing and freeing. Plenty of ports for USB and monitors. No problem with speed on USB or LAN. Compact, doesn't take up a lot of desk space. Would be nice if side mount holes were present so I could mount on side/back of desk and free up more desk space. Plenty of power with the 230w supply. Overall very satisfied.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best dock! I was using a ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2, but having several small issues that were frustrating, not to mention it was not properly charging my laptops (ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 2). However, it was the recommended dock by a Lenovo Rep. After working with Lenovo Support, I discovered the power was no adequate and they allowed me to return the regular Gen 2 dock and purchase this Workstation Dock. ALL the bizarre little issues disappeared. This dock has been great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from HORRIBLE, Glitchy Product I purchased 2 separate docks for my new ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 2, and both of them are low-quality, glitchy products...not at all the quality Lenovo or IBM products I used to use in Silicon Valley. Both of the docks refuse to wake up once the laptop goes to sleep. The laptop LED shows it's on, as does the red light on the docks, but the laptop screen remains black and the 2x HDMI monitors connected to the dock(s just sit there in sleep mode, refusing to wake up. The only way to make it work the way it is supposed to is to turn off the laptop, unplug the power from the dock, and then plug everything back in and turn them on. Extremely disappointing and tedious. Our business will not be purchasing more Lenovo products after this experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works, but with one exception. Does almost exactly what I need it to, but for some reason, it wont charge my workstation laptop. The charger that came with the laptop works just fine, but this dock wont charge it at all. Not a big deal, but when I leave the office and/or go to travel, I have to get under the desk to disconnect the charger that works and take it with me, then put it all back when I am in the office. Other than that gripe, I does everything else it's supposed to.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great, but expensive. This dock works as expected, helps for a minimalist clean setup, and gives you the flexibility to have all your peripherals attached and just 1 connection to the Thinkpad. My only complaint is the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from HDMI throughput limited. The HDMI port performance is limited by the TB3 computer connector throughput. I bypassed the dock and connected my Wacom pen display directly to the workstation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely works with C940 (81TE) 15" This is not the only dock that Lenovo says works with the C940 (81TE 15", but it is the ONLY one they sell that will charge and transfer data with the C940. I would have given 5 stars but the split cable is a bit short, see below. I did a lot of research (see my review of the 40AN0135US). My only negatives with this is: (1) It is pricey (you can find it elsewhere for much less) and (2) the split cable is a bit short (26.38 inches) due to the location of the ports on both units, right side of the doc and left side of the laptop. There is another cable that is 1.5M (Part number: 4X90U90621) which I will get with the rewards from buying the computer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent desktop connectivity Works flawlessly to connect my new P73 to dual 4k monitors. The existence of the power button on the dock allows you to store the laptop under the desk. Just unplug it and throw it in your bag when you need portability.
Date published: 2020-07-11T00:00:00-04:00
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Poor Design - A Step Backwards Takes up much more space on my desktop than the old "Under the laptop" design, which had the added benefit of ergonomically inclining the keyboard. Short, stiff wires connecting the unit to the laptop and the power splitter exacerbate the placement issues. Seems to have been designed with little or no consideration for use cases.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It Works well I need two screen for my work but sometime I could use just my laptop. So I like how this dock doesn't route my audio to my second screen and the option of disconnecting the data cable and not the power. That way I don't lose charge and I don't have to find the other power cable that came with the laptop. So I could just leave it in a backpack when I need to go mobile. I also love how I can turn off everything by the button on the dock don't use it much, but its cool.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE THIS DOCKING STATION! LOVE THIS DOCKING STATION! Small, light-weight, easy to setup. The laptop does not 'sit' on the docking station, it is only connected by cables, so can be tucked away if you like. Personally I find the additional USB ports easy to access so I keep it near me. Very happy with this purchase!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wrong Connections Received product and learned the connections do not fit my laptop. My laptop requires a single USB-C Thunderbolt connection. The dock has a dual connection with a USB-c and a Yellow power port in the connection cable. This connection is incompatible with the laptop. Attempted to contact support for assistance, but they were unable to assist.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock Gen 2 Lenovo has several thunderbolt docking stations. If you are looking for the best, this is it. ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock Gen 2 has multiple ports to serve all your needs. It charges either a desktop, laptop or a tablet including the newest Lenovo Yoga C940 15. I am using it with the Lenovo Yoga C940 15. I was able to connect 2 4K uhd 32 inch monitors at maximum resolution, power mic, wireless keyboard, wireless mouse and I am able to charging my Yoga and keyboard at the same time. No other docking station comes close to this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You will want this for the X1 Extreme It's a behemoth of a dock brick, but if you have an X1 Extreme and need to run a lot of hardware, this is the dock you want. A standard USB-C dock won't provide enough power, after trying to run on one for a month I switched to the Thunderbolt 3 Dock, and it's been running fantastically.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Too Idiosyncratic I've had many Lenovo docks before and this is the first I'm not 100% happy with. Pressing the power button and having to wait minutes for the laptop to actually power on is not good. I simply cannot understand the delay. Plus, if the laptop goes into sleep mode, it may require a hard power down to actually get it to wake up again. If I didn't need multiple laptops and monitors, I probably wouldn't use it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mostly works well, with one annoying problem While most things work well on the dock, even straight out of the box with linux (except for disabling securing in BIOS) - I am having a real problem with the sound port - the sound is occasionally distorted to the point that it is no longer usable. It does seem to reset itself, but still, I expect perfection out of a premium product. Also, I am having a problem with an older DVI monitor, but I don't know if that is the dock, or the dongle that I needed to convert to DP.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from More Headache than Worth Definitely not functioning as expected. I needed to purchase separate cables and to this day keep getting an error message that I need to use the power supply that was sent with the dock because the one being used does not have enough power, however it is the one that was sent. It requires many restarts to finally work. Working with Support but sounds like this is a bigger issue

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Read Your Setup Literature... both of them! There are many things about this docking station I like. I purchased this dock at the same time as I purchased the new laptop. The only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars, is that it was fairly painful to setup. Yes, I admit I did not follow the instructions during setup because it seemed fairly straight-forward. There were numerous driver updates and still we encountered problems. When I did run into problems (problems that my IT person was struggling with as well), we did resort to the diagram included in the literature. The problem was that there were two conflicting diagrams! It all worked out, but this is my first docking station that required two different power plug-ins!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice features but not as reliable as I had expected. Functionally the Dock is very good. It works well with external monitors - I use it with two additional ASUS 2K monitors and the image quality is perfect from the dock on both HDMI and Display Port connections. I also have my phone connected through the pass-through USB-C (Thunderbolt) port. I can even use an Apple Thunderbolt 3-to-2 adapter and from there, a Thunderbolt 2 - to - IEEE1394 and have a Roland FA-66 Audio interface working perfectly for audio and MIDI. So everything works well to standard. However, two things bring off two stars for me: 1) This dock failed within 3.5 months of use. I did not power anything from it other than the computer, and indeed the power supply did still work and power the laptop. But all the PORTS DIED! CDW were champions and sent me a replacement under warranty. But I would have expected far better reliability from a Lenovo (ie. ex-IBM) product. 2) It does not have easy power supply connections. To power a workstation laptop you need to use a stupid Y-split cable for 130W and 65W connections. That's just bad design and bad engineering. Also, the equivalent DELL dock I have used in the past had more USB 3 and USB C ports which I need. On this dock I still have to connect a USB 2.0 powered hub for all my basic peripherals.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great for my laptops This dock is the perfect solution for my desk setup. It can connect to my work laptop (ThinkPad X1 Carbon) via only the thunderbolt, and it also works with my personal ThinkPad P52, which uses the full dual thunderbolt/slim-tip cable due to its power needs. HDMI, DisplayPort, USB, and Ethernet all work perfectly with Linux (tested Debian and Arch). The manual doesn't explain the input power splitter well, but my impression is that the lower power input drives the dock and the thunderbolt power, while the upper input power drives only the slim-tip power port. Kind of an odd choice to need to divide the input power like it does, but it seems like a design artifact of the previous gen, where two separate PSUs were used. Highly recommend for a desk setup that includes a ThinkPad workstation laptop.
