I thought setting up my own internet equipment would be fraught with issues and scheduled a long afternoon just for the task, determined to do whatever it took to break free from the slow unreliable rental equipment. Little did I know I would break open the box and 5min later be online. Literally took 5min and I was up and running above the download/upload speed I had before and since then it’s hasn’t been interrupted even once!

It involved an hour on the phone with comcast, and then another chunk of time with netgear support to get it running. The call with netgear was helpful, but why couldn't the instructions be more user friendly to avoid that call altogether? Overall I am happy with my experience.

After several minutes you're good to go but, in my case I had to then contact Netgear's technical service due update my Netgear wi-fi router because of the new Netgear cable modem. All in all it worked out but, just something to know in case you have troubles.

Setup was time consuming. Allow ample time for the settings to take affect, like an hour or more after running through the settings. After setup this modem works like a champ.

When I did have a problem with an Internet connection I determined that the same 500 was not the issue, however just to be safe I went out and purchased to CM700 in its place rather than take a service contract for three months. For some reason the modem would not accept the Belkin wifi as the WiFi light was red. I ended up buying a Netgear router, hooked it up and everything worked great. Great purchase

I decided to go with this modem as I pretty much have Netgear for all of my other networking equipment (Nighthawk Router and Extender, gigabit switches, etc and figures I should just complete the set. Boy, was I not disappointed! I saw an immediate jump in my speeds now getting my paid for speeds! Great product and I’d definitely recommend.

The modem will sometimes go offline and you have to unplug it a few times to work. I own a Netgear Nighthawk and paired it with this - I have a 600mbps plan from Xfinity yet this modem will only pull 312mbps. Sometimes it just stalls and there goes "me" to unplug and replug. Honestly Im thinking my modem is defextive reason why I dont get the speed I pay for.

This is the second Netgear moden I have had (over more than a decade , and never had a problem. Tech support was helpful. It was fine on day one... but I had a slow-up on day two. The problem self-corrected and now its all working smoothly. this will save me time and money over the cable company rental.

I went online and checked my cable providers website to see which modems were compatible with their service. I wanted to go with a Netgear modem since I was using a Netgear wireless router and was very happy with it. My cable provider had a long list of compatible modems and I was pleased to see that many of them were Netgear brand. I chose this model (CM500) because it is about one step above what my current needs are and if my needs were to change I would still be able to use this one. Since installing the modem I have yet to have a single problem with losing my internet connection. The price of the modem was very reasonable to begin with but I was luck enough to find it on sale for $15 less which was an added bonus to it all.

I bought this today to replace my older Netgear and increase my internet speed and after calling my internet provider to set it up. It failed to provide internet via direct to the modem or via my router. Called Netgear and they were of no help.After calling my provider and Netgear a couple times each and about 2 hours later I gave up and plugged in my ancient Netgear modem and it worked from the get go. Problem is Im now going to be paying a lot more for higher speed and I wont see the benefit as my current modem can only put out 100Mbps. No more Netgear for me.time to try a different brand.

The two companies like to point fingers at each other with no immediate solution. My impression is that the CM500 is not compatible with all routers as advertised. :(

And we are saving $$ buy owning it and avoiding the monthly rental charge. It does take a bit longer to set up as our service provider needed to authorize the new modem as part of the initial set up. We paired it with a Netgear Nighthawk Mesh WiFi system and our internet is now blazing fast.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does not connect to Internet Despite having received a good explanation of NETGEAR Technical Support (Case 42271616, Agent 10776 and helping to configure the Modem, I have not been able to activate it with the internet: First Comcast / Xfinity in various attempts could not register it as CM500 which is the name of purchase and that also appears on its chassis and in the box that contained it. 2Th. I finally found a small sticker at the bottom of the box where the bar code appears and says: CM500-1AZNAS and with that model they could register it in Comcast but they CAN ALSO ACTIVATE THE INTERNET, I had to reinstall the Old modem that does connect the internet. I have to call NETGEAR Support again to see if they can solve the problem.

Never have regretted cutting the cable and giving Comcast back their modem. Should have done this years ago. The instructions that came with the unit were easy to read and understand and the CM500 communicated with Comcast with no problems. Would give this unit a A ++++++

When I asked for technical support I was informed that the ISP is the only way to update the modem, and when I spoke to ISP tech support I was told Netgear needs to update the device.

I spent over 2 hours on the phone with Xfinity trying to get it to connect but it wouldn’t. I ended up going to the store and getting a different branded modem and it was up and running in less than 5 minutes. To make matters worse the modem came with a card that said 90 day money back guarantee but when I opened a case with Netgear they would only offer to send me a replacement, which does me no good.

I got this so that in the future I was upgrading my speed but when I did upgrade to 600 I was only getting 350. The internet provider (Xfinity said it only supports up to 370 and nothing more. I got out of my 90 period for my tech support and they want me to pay $50 for it when I can go and buy a new modem for that price. I bought the modem and router and this is the issue I have.

Almost sent it back but gave it a long shot and called ComCast. They tweaked some setting on their end,. and now I get the speed I expected. I have the 250Mb speed tier, I now routinely measure 220mbps with speakeasy. Just be aware, that a service call will probably be needed to get full speed. Signed up for the NetGear Genie (or something like that in order to change the password etc. But the key thing is that my download speed went from from around 20 to 70.

It runs great and has no problem providing bandwidth and speed. I paired this with the Netgear R6700 Nighthawk AC1750 and Charter/Spectrum 100+ Mb internet. Great combination! Would buy again and recommend to anyone that uses the internet for casual use, work use, or for gaming. I was actually going to get the CM600, but they were out of stock at the time of order, however the CM500 is more than enough and I'm glad I got it.

This product is g-a-r-b-a-g-e, it over heats and slows your wifi and cuts in and out a lot. Plus if you want what you paid for you have to reset it daily and let it die and over heat again and again. I dont have a defect cause it very clear to see that it is overheating and needing air. I have took it apart and checked it out and that poor thing is almost dead inside. Have tried lots of modems and this by far is the worse one.

With the Spectrum hardware, we constantly had problems with our internet, often requiring the modem/router to be reset. With the CM500 modem and Nighthawk router, we have not had any dropped connections. We're finally getting the internet service I expected and we don't have to pay Spectrum's monthly charge for their terrible equipment. Now we can surf and stream to our heart's content with no worries. The CM500 modem and Nighthawk router combination is highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from CM 500 is 10x slower than Comcast xFi Gateway My CM 500 maxes out at 28.3 Mbps downstream - and switching to the Comcast xFi gateway yielded more than 400 Mbps downstream. I understand the CM 500 is DOCSIS 3.0 so it's max speed of 680 Mbps is slower than a DOCSIS 3.1 modem - but 28.3 Mbps isn't anywhere near the 680 Mbps max speed or the 400+ Mbps speed of the other CM on the same line with the same test conditions... either I'm doing something wrong or XFinity is rate limiting this CM ... not sure where or how to get support as Xfinity won't support the device and NetGear isn't reacheable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buy One and Roll the Dice... The CM500 is not a bad modem. When it works, it works well. The problem is that when it stops working, you are out of luck. The warranty which comes with the modem covers only the first 90 days. Every review and/or complaint I have read about this model, aside from one or two, talks about problems occurring after one or two years. By that time, the warranty has expired, although you are able to sign up for an extended warranty.....for the same price (or more! as the modem itself. In other words, if it stops working, you may as well replace it. As I said, when the modem works, it works well. The service policy, however, needs to be replaced.

None of the devices will connect to my primary network automatically. They all defer to a third network that is intended mainly for only video. It was very difficult to get this modem to work well with my top of the line Linksys router.

There are decent modem below $100, just like the older one that I have. Only if you have a lower Mbs from your service. But if you have a 125mbs up, I recommend this product. I bought Netgear Nighthawk AC2400 dualband wifi to complete the package.

For home and for small business, Arri s is known brand for modem, but truthfully it is not great when you don't want to spend the money: like what your ISP may provide you with. This Modem is reliable, and cost performance is the great. My two cent is make sure your ISP is compatible with this modem.

Unfortunately, Comcast appears to throttle the upload speed to 10 Mbps on DOCSIS 3.0 modems, even though they can support such throughput.

I asked repeatedly, and I mean many times, why the upstream and downstream leds were always solid red. The support person refused to answer that question and after a long, long time on the phone, I gave up and hung up. This person appeared to me to have no idea of what he was doing. The Quick Start document says you can see a red light from the power led, but it does not indicate the condition for a red display on either the upstream or downstream leds. I'm back renting a modem from Xfinity and will return the Netgear.

The first one I got didn’t work, but the second one has been smooth as silk can’t even notice any difference, in fact, for somethings streaming is even better less choppy, I’m thinking that it’s because this is a modem only I have my own Wi-Fi router and never used the Wi-Fi on the Xfinity device. This was a great purchase and I recommend it to anyone. It was really a good price on Black Friday.

I wanted it to operate in passthru mode so that my router would be web facing. The comcast modem can be configured as passthru, but it kept changing back and enabling the wifi!!! Enough! This modem was just what the docsis ordered. It does what I want, comcast can't go behind my back and fool with it, and, best of all, I don't have to pay rent to them for it!

I have it hooked up to a router with a wireless router hooked to the router. Everything works as it should. The device itself is in a small unobtrusive casing, and one would hardly know there. If only everything was as simple.

One thing everyone should know is that you must call your internet provider whenever you buy new equipment for them to resend the signal from their company to your modem to recognize it. After doing that, it worked like a charm.

You do need to call Comcast so they register the new modem, and remove the old one. Keep in mind they also need to do the same for VOICE! I had to call back for it because the first agent forgot.

I now only have 250MB internet service. I purchased the CM500 as a cost effective way to continue the same (or better internet access for my home WIFI. It not only met all of my expectations, but it was very easy to set up and register with Netgear and my service provider! If you're on the fence about "cutting the cord" from your Cable TV service, this cable modem is an easy way to get started!

I had nothing but problems with their modem before it eventually gave up the ghost. I purchased the Netgear CM500 based on my past dealing with Netgear routers and also the price was excellent. I had it installed and activated within 30 minutes. My internet speeds are now faster than they ever were with the providers equipment. I should have made the switch a long time ago and saved myself approximately $140 dollars a year. Thanks Netgear!

Which I did as I understand that there is no perfect electronic so a defective modem is understandable. However I purchased another one of the same model and this one also would not work. That is two defective modems in one week! That does not sound like a coincidence to me. I’d give it zero stars if I could.

Tech change so fast that sometimes you aren't aware that you have upgraded until you pay closer attention to logs and stats. I finally decided to do something about it and upgraded our modem and we have gone from having to reset our modem 2 to 4 times in the evening to not having to reset it once in the last week we have had it. I am very satisfied with the upgrade and I went ahead and bought the refurbished model and saved $20.

After years of issues with the Spectrum supplied modem, I finally decided to try a product from a company that specializes in routers and modems. It was a great decision. 90 percent of the constant dropouts I was experiencing have come to an end. I can finally enjoy the internet without interruptions thanks to this inexpensive modem from Netgear!
