Rated 5 out of 5 by from Has modules to troubleshoot web applications, database transactions, and unified communications, all in one What is our primary use case? Riverbed has a few modular solutions. Some are independent but they are all part of a whole and they function as one solution. You can implement a few of these modules depending on what the customer is interested in. For example, APM and NPM, and sometimes both combined. This gives you a deeper and more complex picture than some competitors' solutions. What is most valuable? I have found the AppResponse, which is a packet capture solution, very good. It gives you the ability to drill down back in time. You've got all the packets there. You can troubleshoot it later, not immediately. It's very interesting. It also has the modules to troubleshoot web applications, database transactions, and unified communications, all in one. It is something between an NPM and an APM. What needs improvement? There is always room for improvement. I would say improving the user interface is the most important. Also, faster support for some new security features and support for the secure key exchange. There have been a lot of changes in the last few years with the names in Riverbed. SteelCentral used to be called Cascade. Every two years they change the name of the products. Somebody who is new, or even not so new, needs time to remember the names. This is not something crucial to do and when something is good and working well, why should they just rename it? For how long have I used the solution? I have been working with Riverbed SteelCentral AppResponse for five years. What do I think about the stability of the solution? The stability is very good. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? The scalability is okay. How are customer service and technical support? I have been in touch with support a few times, but not for anything crucial. It was for questions about how to find something, or getting the user interface to show in an appropriate way. No problems with features or anything like that. How was the initial setup? The initial setup is straightforward but you have to know a little about the product. It's not for everybody to just plug and play. If you know how the solution is implemented then it is straightforward. It's very fast from our side. It usually takes some time from the customer side because they need to define it on a block of switches on a virtual infrastructure. If it is prepared properly from all sides it should be done and all set up in one working day. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? The licenses are costly and are done per module. So, if you need the database or a transaction analysis, you have to pay for that module. You pay once per module and you have it forever. The same for the web transaction analysis and unified communication. You pay for the module once and that's it. But the cost depends on implementation because there are different platforms. Is it a retro-platform or it is hardware? It is an expensive solution, it's not for everybody. It is not for small customers, but more for medium and large ones. What other advice do I have? We require a staff of a small team to maintain the solution. They can quickly find and troubleshoot problems in the database, transactions, unified communication, etc. It's a very good tool. It is very fast and very informative. It gives you an overview where the problem is on the backend server or on the network side. Then you can focus more deeply on that. On a scale of one to ten I would give it an eight. Disclaimer: My company has a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer:Partner

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The application response time is user-friendly. How has it helped my organization? The biggest problem of end-to-end Application Performance Monitoring (APM) solution ( https://www.itcentralstation.com/categories/application-performance-management-apm ) is that service assurance is mapping a problem to the appropriate team. When the business units check their jobs, step by step, every single system seems to work properly but they need to check the big picture, which AppResponse does easily. What is most valuable? The application response time is very user friendly. With some APM solutions, it can take a long time to check a periodic report, but you can get all the necessary details quickly with AppResponse. What needs improvement? The admin dashboard could be easier, as it takes a little bit of time to get used to it. Also, they need to better integrate with products and solutions from different vendors. For how long have I used the solution? One to three years. What do I think about the stability of the solution? Each AppResponse implementation made our stability better across our 500+ applications. How is customer service and technical support? Technical support is 10/10, as they have a quick response time and are awesome. How was the initial setup? Initial setup is really straightforward and can be completed with a couple of clicks and you don't need to perform a lot of deep dives. What about the implementation team? The initial setup was performed by the vendor team, but updates and reinstalls have been done by in-house staff. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? The licensing model is expensive compared to its competitors, but the service it gives to your business, and the data quality, means that it's worth it. Which other solutions did I evaluate? During the PoC process, we met with representatives of various vendors about different solutions and Riverbed was one of them. AppResponse and ARX showed us the red points easily and quickly. We then decided to add the product to our portfolio and now the monitoring team and application owners are happier now. What other advice do I have? The implementation is very easy. Business application and server logic can show the root cause of issues and provide service assurance through end-to-end business relations. Every service assurance and monitoring team should try the product. It can probably improve your internal business relationships. Rated 5 out of 5 by from A scalable, and stable solution for one's capacity and debugging needs What is our primary use case? We use the solution for application performance, as well as capacity. We also use it for debugging. As we have a packet, we can look to this should the need arise. What is most valuable? This kind of question is nonsensical to me since the tool is selected based on the service it is supposed to provide. No tool is simple, in as much as they all require certain competency skills. Firstly, a proper and wide range of the IT system is required. Secondly, there must be sufficient time to learn about the format of the tool, how it is designed and how it must be used. This applies to every tool, be it APM, NPM or SIEM. With this in mind, it is up to the user to have the competency and requisite knowledge of the landscape and system so that he may use it properly. Of course, there are certain tools which have, lets say, a nicer dashboard than others, such as Dynatrace. But, the dashboard is merely an extra service provided by the tool. The actual purposes of the tool and its attendant advantages is not the dashboard. It is to provide intelligence for understanding and analyzing the traffic and for reproducing and doing synthetics. Really, this question comes back to the person involved, the one who purchases the product and defines its need. What needs improvement? The AI features should be addressed in respect of the analysis and intelligence that must be supported and delivered in the tool to predigest the large amounts of data. For how long have I used the solution? I have been using Riverbed SteelCentral AppResponse for perhaps six or seven years. What do I think about the stability of the solution? The solution is stable. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? First there is a need to define the term flexibility, whether we are talking about the capacity of the tool to be used in various, multiple diverse environment, or its capacity to be, let's say, customized in terms of GUI for the user. When it comes to flexibility, I start with certain predefined rules, such as those respecting the dashboard. I can then easily add my own rules to match my goals and environment. When it comes to the ability to scale up the product, this is suitable for small medium and large environments, PPG and Volkswagon being examples. It is no secret that we are a big company and the solution allows for growth and absorption. How was the initial setup? The installation is complex, although this rule applies to all tools. Consequently, there are no improvements of which to speak of in this area. It has been a number of years since installation took place. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? The solution is no more expensive than other products. At the end of the day all solutions are always expensive. It all depends on how one wishes to spend his money. There are a host of solutions, some being open source, others being GitHub and there are expenses involved in the manpower requirements relating to their internal maintenance. What other advice do I have? I rate Riverbed SteelCentral AppResponse as an eight out of ten, as I do not consider it to be the best in its class. A nine I would reserve for Dynatrace or AppDynamics. Which deployment model are you using for this solution? Hybrid Cloud Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's a total solution that gives you end-to-end visibility at all levels What is our primary use case? AppResponse is a device for network and application performance monitoring. It enables you to trace all transactions and connections and troubleshoot issues with the network, applications, and databases. What is most valuable? AppResponse is a total solution that gives you end-to-end visibility into applications at all levels, from Layer 1 to Layer 7. We can trace all those sections: physical, IP, transport, presentation, application, etc. It gives us the full picture. What needs improvement? Integration between NPM and APM solutions would improve efficiency. There is no agent on the server site related to AppResponse. For how long have I used the solution? I used AppResponse for one year at my previous employer, but I switched companies about five months ago. What do I think about the stability of the solution? I rate AppResponse 10 out of 10 for stability. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? I rate AppResponse eight out of 10 for scalability. How was the initial setup? I rate AppResponse nine out of 10 for ease of setup. It is deployed on-premises in Turkey because of government restrictions. Regulations prevent us from going to the cloud. I installed it alone, and the total deployment time was two hours. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? AppResponse is a little expensive, but the cost depends on your configuration and storage. It was about $200,000 for three years. Which other solutions did I evaluate? My previous company tried another device for network performance monitoring, but AppResponse was the best solution. We can get wonderful outputs from Riverbed. The device enabled us to easily monitor all the network traffic and deal with problems whether related to databases, applications, or networks. What other advice do I have? I rate Alluvio AppResponse 10 out of 10. If you work for a financial company especially, you probably face problems on the application side. The problem is easy to identify, but you need to determine the root cause. You can solve issues easily via AppResponse because it shows you all the details of your transactions so you can see the real problem in the database, network, software, etc. For example, you can find the solution easily if you create the right dashboard on your site. If you can't find the problem, you can observe or investigate PCAP. Which deployment model are you using for this solution? On-premises Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.
