Great features, disappointing display
I've had this laptop for 10 days and it is going back. The performance and features and great, especially in such a compact device. Unfortunately I cannot live with the display. Unless one is positioned exactly in front of it, perfectly centered horizontally & vertically, portions of the screen start to darken. I believe this is a privacy "feature," but I don't know how anyone can work with it. Simply sitting up in my chair, or just leaning a few degrees to the side is all it takes to no longer have a bright, clear view of the entire screen. The effect is you want to blink your eyes to make it clear. The fatigue factor makes a full day of work just awful. I've tried for over a week, I just can't adjust to it. As soon as I go back to a traditional "normal" display I immediately feel at ease. The HP screen...ugh, I don't know how this ever made it to production. It's a shame too, because everything else about this system is beautiful, and I wish I could get along with it. The audio is especially good also. I generally love HP, but this one is an dud.

Great features - very bad LCD Panel
After installing the software, I immediately noticed the laptop’s screen was DOA (ghosting and uneven). I phoned HP tech support and emailed images of the screen to the tech. I also also told him the Sure View integrated privacy screen was so dark it made the notebook unusable. When the tech reviewed the images he agreed the screen was bad. I returned the unit for a refund. I have purchased several EliteBooks in the past. How did this notebook pass HP quality control? Very disappointed!

Best laptop I've ever owned
I have had this laptop for about 8 months and honestly feel it is the best laptop I've owned. I don't make that statement lightly. This has replaced my desktop for 95% of all computer related activities which often include things like CAD modeling, rendering 3d models, coding, compiling software, photo/media processing, video rendering and some moderate gaming. In all of those situations the laptop has performed well enough that I never felt the need to switch over to my desktop except for some higher end games. Oh, and the keyboard is great for a laptop keyboard. I'm a hard core mechanical keyboard fan and while this keyboard isn't at the same level as cherry mx blues, this is still the best laptop keyboard I've ever used (even compared to Lenovo.) Plus it has the number pad, which was a big thing for me. I'm picky about my keyboards.
There are just enough ports, and all the right kind (like full sized HDMI.) The USB-C ports allow you to connect a dock if you need more ports without forcing you to live the dongle life if you can get by with 1 usb a ports. They did a great job of fitting a 15 inch screen on a relatively compact form factor. The bezel isn't razor thin, but it's not chunky. Having spent a few years with a 14 inch screen, 15 inch was a requirement. That slight boost in screen size makes a difference. Battery life is pretty good and I can get 7+ hours easy depending on what I'm doing. Don't expect 7 hours if you are rendering or converting from RAW to JPG though.
As a business class laptop this thing is designed to be repaired if a part fails, but HP goes one step further, and for me this is part of what got me to switch over to HP. HP offers tear down videos on their youtube channel and a service manual on their website which shows you how to replace parts if needed. HP if you are reading this review, you got this right. As the "tech guy" in my circle of friends, knowing I will be who they come to first if something breaks, I will be recommending HP for business laptops. This is something I REALY appreciate from a manufacture, especially given the fact that it's easier to build disposable tech (not great for the environment though.)
Now, that being said, no one laptop will work for everyone and there are a few things you should be aware of if you are looking to purchase this model. Mainly the privacy screen. Because of the way the screen is designed to allow the privacy feature, you need to be directly in front of the screen to get the best view, even with the privacy portion turned off. If you have never used a privacy screen before you probably won't like it, and 99% of consumers don't need it. The few cases where it would be truely beneficial are in medical and government offices dealing with peoples personal info. If you are reading this review looking to purchas a single laptop that probably isn't you. There are times where the privacy screen is a bit annoying, but I'm not docking a star for that as I knew beforehand what to expect. If you don't need the privacy screen, don't get it.
The speakers are good, but not great (laptop speakers, what do you expect?) However the fact that they are facing you instead of on the bottom of the laptop does make a big difference, and they can get reasonably loud (way better than the dell xps 13 speakers.)
Last but not least, if you are planning on runing linux on this laptop, not all distros are easy to get working on this hardware. Ubuntu, Manjaro, and POP! OS all work very well, debian however was a pain to get working. If you go the Ubuntu based distro route both the latest LTS and latest distro have decent hardware compatability. POP! OS has been the best experience so far, everything including the hot keys worked out of the box except for the brightness buttons.
To sum it all up, this is about as close as you can get to my idea of a perfect laptop. Just be aware of what you are getting if you decide on the privacy screen.
