Know your gear
The Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router is really three devices in one box. First, there's the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect both screaming fast Wireless-G (802.11g at 54Mbps) and Wireless-B (802.11b at 11Mbps) devices to the network. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together. Connect four PCs directly, or attach more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Finally, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection.
Once your computers are connected to the Router and the Internet, they can communicate with each other too, sharing resources and files. All your computers can print on a shared printer connected anywhere in the house. And your computers can share all kinds of files -- music, digital pictures, and documents. Keep all your digital music on one computer, and listen to it anywhere in the house. Organize all of your family's digital pictures in one place, to simplify finding the ones you want, and easing backup to CD-R. Utilize extra free space on one computer when another's hard drive starts to fill up.
The push button setup feature makes it easy to configure your wireless devices. Just push the button on the router and on your other Secure EasySetup-enabled wireless device to automatically create an encryption-secured wireless connection. TKIP and AES protects your data and privacy with up to 128-bit industrial-strength encryption. The Router can serve as a DHCP Server, has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks, supports VPN pass-through, and can be configured to filter internal users' access to the Internet. Advanced configuration is a snap with the web browser-based interface.
With the Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router at the center of your home or office network, you can share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers, and multi-player games with flexibility, speed, security and simplicity!
Features:
All-in-one Internet-sharing Router, 4-port Switch, and 54Mbps Wireless-G (802.11g) Access Point
Shares a single Internet connection and other resources with Ethernet wired and Wireless-G and -B devices
Push button setup feature makes wireless configuration secure and simple
High security: TKIP and AES encryption, wireless MAC address filtering, powerful SPI firewall

First Router - Hard to replace
This was my first router back in 2006. I still have it and it is going strong. Over Christmas this year, with laptops, netbooks, cell phones, game systems and a smart TV, there were at least 26 units pulling a signal.
I am looking to possibly upgrade to an AC router to improve range and speed but after reading dozens of reviews on different products, I am not sure it is a smart move.
Does anyone know if the range and speed would be improved with an AC router over how this router performs?

Totally Plug and Play and forget about it!
Talking about the old one: My old one did not have antenna and I was always having to unplug it and reset it with my service providers modem. It was a major pain!
This New One: I like this model a lot. I can log in and change passwords with ease, i can change the name of my connection easily. My wireless connection never cuts out. I don't know how long I have had it, couple a months maybe, and I have not had to unplug it, count to ten, stand on my head or hold my mouth just right! It has worked ever since I plugged it in.

Best Value for a mid=sized home
I replaced an older and less powerful Linksys wireless router about three months ago. I did so because there were places in my one story, 2100 sq. ft. home where the Wi-Fi signal was week and I would lose streaming viveo. I purchased the WRT 54 GL Linksys wireless router prior to upgrading my cable broadband to "turbo" for an additional $35.00/mo. The router was easy to install and it worked great right off the bat. I even get great Wi-Fi on my deck ( the opposite end of where the router is physically located. I could not be happier with my purchase and it has actually saved me far more than what I spent on it. I bought it at Amazon based on descriptions and specs. This is the only brand router I would ever own.

I am so glad I persevered to install
I bought this replacement two years ago but couldn't get it to work wirelessly. Well, my previous router WRT54G was dropping signals and generally not working well (8 years old) so I thought I had better give the "new" one a try again. IT WORKED! and I found out what I had been missing - didn't really realize my ROUTER needed replacing - it wasn't my service that was bad. The support pages at Linksys.com are great - you just have to keep reading and clicking to find the right information.

Very reliable device!
I bought my WRT54GL (1.1) around 2008 and later I order one for my parents, sister and some of my friends has the same device.
The router is good as it is but as most of you knows the good hardware is the best with one of the Linux based firmware, at least this is my experience. I used my router with the original firmware for one year as I was afraid to change it but then I took the time and I replaced the stock firmware with Brainslayer 14929 Mini build (v24-sp2 08/12/10).
The WRT54GL with the above mentioned software is really a got solution and also you get many great new features. If you need good reliable wireless G router cool features thanks to DD-WRT and its community this is a very good device.
I hope that some of the new Linksys device will get the same fame on one day.
Cheers,
Misi

Really reliable, every day
I bought this router about 10 years back and it still works without any issues. I recently bought one more for my sister since she just wants the router to work without any hassle. She borrowed mine for a while and was so happy without it, but then I need mine back, so I got her a new router of this model.
I have a 50mbps internet at home and when I use this router I always get full speed through the network cable, without loosing anything. I measure the speed always to 47-49mbps. When I use it wirelessly it always tops at 20-21mbps. So the speed on the wireless is a bit slow, but works fine for normal use. And since she always uses it through a cable, then she never looses any speed.
I am a bit impressed also of the range, if you consider the age if the product and that it only has two antennas.
My 10 years old router is running dd-wrt and it has always worked and I have NEVER needed to restart the router because something is not working.

Only needed the PS
Bought this to replace the same model which was 8 years old. Turned out that all I needed was the power supply. Still happy. A PS would cost nearly as much as the whole package. If it fails, in another 8 years, I'll have a spare to troubleshoot. I've been very pleased with this unit, especially for the price. My speed seems to be limited only by the cable (copper) and cable modem in front of the router. P.S.: Keep a record of your settings. First time through may be time consuming, but it's not brain surgery.

I bought mine USED 11 years ago. I still use it, have never had any problems with it other than recently one of the Ethernet ports have began having issues. But again, its well over 10 years old and still works amazing, I can play xbox online AND stream media on a smart tv at the same time with no issues. Very impressed my dinosaur has lasted this long and still performs as well as it does. Never had range issues, could share internet with people in my apartment complex no problem and worked great in a 2 story house with a basement, with router on top floor. I would very much consider buying another one if mine ever dies.

Fantastic possibilities but DELL.COM did not list the version # of this product.
Anyone can install DDWRT onto this router giving it features seen only in routers worth a great deal more. However with out the Version number "WRT 54G (V8" we are unable to determine if this is a compatible unit. The version number should be listed at least in the tech specs. DDWRT compatibility is one of the major reasons this unit is still produced, also DDWRT is dependent on the version of this product.

All of the Linksys devices made since 2008 have had some issue or another. this is one of their better products but it is still plagued with issues. I found that using the dd-wrt firmware on this device fixes most of the issues. You can get this at www.dd-wrt.com but be aware this will void you warrant. It does how ever unlocks the router to a business grade device so in my eyes its a far trade off but not for everyone.

I replaced my WRT54G with this guy and it works great. This router rarely needs a reboot even when being used heavily by my Xbox, PC, and Laptop all at once. It is also very reasonable priced.

More a Wireless router than just a router. Excellent workhorse and if you have the correct version please use the D-WRT version. With the correct settings you can easily span 100 meters or more. It has all the basic firewall and nat configurations.

I have been using this router for the last 6 years in my home office. It has been easy to manage and is also been working well with the increasing number of devices I have added to the network over the years. I recommend this router for home and small office users that need a older yet useful router.

Excellent router. Reliable and durable. For a home user the user interface for setup is preety straight forward and there is nothing more you will need. If you are an IT then chances are you already flashed DD-WRT or Tomato or COOPA or any other firmware of your choice. After that of course the experience gets enhanced, along with the features that get added.

The 54G STILL has a following after all these years. Earlier revisions had much better hardware, but even the later ones could handle anything a home user could throw at it. Throw DD-WRT on it and you'll be able to use it until it bites the dust.

These were my go-to routers for many years. I would dump them and load DD-WRT on them. making a $60 router into a $600 router with all the bells and whistles. The hardware was near bulletproof. There were times where I would brick one and had to short a few pins to get it running, but every single one of them are still functional.

I have a special place in my heart for these ugly little Linksys routers. They were mainstays of any wireless network that I set up. Then I found out about DD-WRT and my networking pants went crazy. I will say that I have had to warranty a few of these and junk many more but with the amount I have deployed, that is to be expected.
For the price I still don't know if there is a better model networking device out there. I wish they would upgrade this model to today's standards and keep all the reliability and customization options.

I used to recommend these routers all the time, but I have had a couple of dozen users with problems with the firmware since Cisco took over. I love the router, but if you get a series of power flickers (even with a surge protector), the firmware will completely drop and need to be reloaded. I had my first couple of these in the days before Cisco, and they still work. I have users who have gone through 3 in 18 months. I just lost one the other day while putting it in place as an emergency stop gap. Ironically, the PIX 501 died, and while programming my backup WRT54G, the firmware died. You get a white page that says load firmware. Fortunately I had an old Linksys router from the pre-Cisco days to drop in place too. I think they have just gone to poor firmware chips, and I am looking for a different SOHO device now. The Netgear stuff is nice, but can be a pain for the initial setup. I am not a fan of D-Link, and all of their support is in India. I may have to experiment with the Negear stuff more.

I have used these for years with zero issues, save for the one time I had to call their support, and the "tech" on the other end was most likely reading from a manual or computer screen. So technically, I have had zero issues with the device itself as stated above.
I use DD-WRT and will not go back to the default firmware anytime soon. It has made life so much easier when I need to adjust any router settings.
I did upgrade to the Wirleless N version a while ago simply for faster speed on any of my wireless devices and have not had any issues.
Highly recommend it to anybody searching for a wireless router. Best buy for the money IMHO.

I have found that Linksys makes remarkably stable products, but perhaps the fact that they are owned by Cisco may explain that. Highly, Highly recommended.

I use of these with the tomatoes OS on it; unfortunately Linksys discontinued the broadcom/linux based chipset they were using (I think versions 1-4 had it). That tomatoes OS takes this to a near enterprise router, the easy setup button can be programmed, the light colors can be changed, QoS functions, there is data mapped to graphs, the device can be used as a wifi scanner etc. It literally becomes a enterprise grade device on home based hardware. After loading tomatoes I have had no issues and can even telnet into it if I want. Great OS for a cool device, I wish they wouldn;t have gone back to proprietary like they did. Their FW/OS sucks on this device.

Other than that, they've been the ideal inexpensive WAP for the home user.
Sooner than later I need to work up the nerve to install DD-WRT or something else on one of these -- it's been tough to work up the nerve though, since you're fixing that which really isn't broken. Linksys has a solid performer in the WRT54g. Netgear, D-Link, and others simply cannot compete for durability and ease of use. Kudos to Linksys for one of the best consumer broadband products on the market.

These are akin to the LaserJet III of the printer world. They worked, they were solid, they were dependable and they are no longer available.
I still use one as strictly an access point for the Wireless segment off my firewall for guests who just want the internet. Sadly, it must be reset every couple of days for some reason - never important enough to delve into the way. Just reboot it and it is okay again.
But for its time, this was the kingpin of wireless routers.

Don't know if anyone pointed this out yet, but while this is made by cisco, it's actually a linksys router. It's a great wireless router, that provides top notch speed and range, ease of setup, and high reliability. Couple that with the fact the linksys/cisco will stand behind their products and in event of replacements will ofter send the new unit out the same day as the request and allow for "cross" shipping, instead of waiting to recieve the defective unit first. Not to mention, you pair this with a linksys broadband modem, and oh boy do they look nice stacked up!Don't know if anyone pointed this out yet, but while this is made by cisco, it's actually a linksys router. I bought this thing a LONG time ago. Worked well for a year or two. Not super range, but enough for an average home.
Biggest problem I had was that after a while the device essentially required rebooting. Never was able to pinpoint the cause, but the device just quit working a lot. It wasn't too bad, maybe one time one month, two or three the next but it got old.
Haven't had any problems since switching to a d-link.

For a consumer grade product can't complain too much but we've started having issues with them flaking out lately. I've tried a couple of DD-WRT flashes to see if I couldn't bring a couple back to life but they're still acting strange. With all that said they only cost around $50 new and have lasted 2 to 3 years each so can't ding them on that.

The current version is a decent home router. Must be reset when the power flickers, but otherwise solid. There are actually several models sold under this name, and the one I have didn't like the dd-wrt mod. The version that got this router a reputation for modability was re-released as the WRT54GL.

I also had one that would drop signal and have to be rebooted all the time. The linksys tech support was useless in trying to figure out the cause of the drops. I have has my WRT54G for about 3 years now. I have had no problems with it. I have even told my youngest brother to buy one and later found out that my younger brother had purchased one as well. His has the extension antenna for a broader range. I like the software included with mine, I access mine through IE using the base IP address. My brother's uses EasyLink Advisor, which I find a little buggy, still it works for him. As for the settings, I have had no problem navigating the menus at all. In fact, I required all wireless users of my network to supply me with there MAC address because I use the MAC filter .

Great product if you can still find a V1.

I've had the pleasure of working with many of these routers YEARS after they've been discontinued, and they continue to go strong.
An even better solution to the stock unit, is to get the WRT54GL (L means Linux, as it supports 3rd party firmware). And load up DD-WRT or Tomato Firmware on it, you'll be even more impressed.

I have tried newer Belkin and Linksys devices, but none of them seem to live up to their respective hype, and I wind up going back to my 54G.

I have beat them up, loaded, reloaded, and changed the firmware from stock to tomato and back so many times i've lost count, rotating as i've moved which one is my primary router, using all of them as just wireless access points as i've paired them with ClarkConnect firewall/routers and back. I hate(d) the doorstop wedge design of it's "replacement" and refuse to imagine the day that my last one gives up the ghost and i have to shop for another one.

Linksys WRT54G - the IRON HORSE.
A legend/myth has it that this is the best wireless router for your buck on the consumer level. I have had this installed at numerous client's homes and have had no issues rather than maybe having to reboot it every once in a while.. usually due to a problem btween the router and the modem (usually the modem chokes and causes the router to choke as well.. not sure why). This is what I'd call a STANDARD wifi tool. PLUS there are many alternate firmwares for this particular model if you like modding routers. My buddy installed a 50mm fan on the top of his and it ran like a champ.
Highly reliable, dependable.. wont break even if you throw it off a cliff into some rocks (maybe not... but close). I love em.

Does it's job and leaves me alone. Also, it's so prevalent you can easily find documentation, etc. and/or almost memerize the UI for troubleshooting.

This router and the ability to install OpenWRT, DD-WRT, or Tomato along with its inexpensive price are great. I would strongly recommend it for a small business or home network, but if you need absolute reliability in an environment that has some type of interference then you are best off with an enterprise level product like the actual Cisco routers and access points.

This is an infantry soldier of access points' army. It's equipped with a good medium to long range signal, armed with some cable slots to special device connections, and capable of routing your network with efficiency and security.
A DD-WRT really improves it's abilities. Specialized in Home/Small Offices missions.

A good router, interface is functional but you need a technical understanding. Best range I've had on any device, really is good.
The only issue I've had is the ethernet interface dying on me and google informs me this isn't an uncommon occurance. So, on that basis, 3 stars.

My old company purchased over 50 of these WAPs to distribute among all the sites. They worked well for their intended purpose for the most part. Of course the one major disadvantage was that they constantly had to be power cycled. So much so that the company decided to opt out and go with another option.

Great device, absolutely love it. had to knock off 1 point though, cause mine crapped out about 2 months after setting it up. Still dont know what happened exactly, but the firmware completely flaked, to the point where i was unable to reload it. Fortunately after an hour on chat with a rep, they shipped me a new one. So at least their warranty coverage is decent.

I can't stand Linksys routers. there is no way one person can get 3 "Lemons" of the same brand in a row. I bought this exact model and all it did was function as a switch. (and yes i know how to navigate the software and make sure its on) anyways, i called the Linksys help desk and they admitted it had to be a Lemon and i returned it to Best buy for the higher end Linksys router. i dont remember the model # but is was black and almost alien looking, but anyways, that S### wouldn't power on. The dang thing was fried too, so i though it might be the surge protector, frying it, wasn't the case. Then i returned another one recently and just got the Dlink Gaming router. Had no issues at all with it. Maybe its my luck but i wont ever buy a Linksys for home use again.

I first bought a WRT54G v5 some years back, I think it was 2004 or 2005. I still have the same device. It's been flashed with DD-WRT a few times and even some other firmwares. I've bricked it, brought it back to life. It still keeps on truckin' along! I currently, and have had for some years now, have this particular model and version of the WRT54G, running DD-WRT configured as a client bridge so that I can have my home network span the entire house without having to run cat6 everywhere. I have the second WRT54 unit I bought (a GS) also running DD-WRT and it's configured as an AP for my work network (until I can afford a WLAN controller).

Not bad. Works with DD-WRT and OpenWRT as a low-cost alternative to Cisco equipment. With the firmware options available, it is just as functional as any B/G wireless access point out there. I have had to be very careful about matching firmware revisions to one another in multi-point installations. Contrary to the original hype around "hacking your router to 10 times its original output," you can't crank up the output to 251mw without signal instability. 100mw is about maximum. A good antenna makes all the difference, even at low power.
P.S. I've had mixed results, depending on the environment. In an industrial environment that was prone to high amounts of RF noise, I found that of 3COM, Linksys, and Cisco, only the Cisco worked 100% of the time without any "tweaking." Purchased 2 of them in order to extend a Wireless network over 2 locations about 4 years ago. Used dd-wrt to set them up as Point to Point extenders and works an absolute treat. Found them to be a little flaky if a virtual adapter is added to enable both Extender and AP, so just stuck with a separate AP to allow wireless at the remote location.

Love this router. Very Powerful. Run a few of them on the network at home as wireless switches. It doesn't exactly have to be used as a router. Many uses! Works great with OpenDNS and DynDNS. Sometimes the darn thing needs a rebooting but you can't beat it for the price.

Always a reliable device. Plenty of features if you need them. Apparently one of the images lets you create VLANs but Im not too sure if I need that yet.

It has long been my opinion that the WRT54g series is the highest quality non-corporate level networking device you could possibly buy, with a catch. In my experience nearly all firmware/drivers from companies who's names start with L (linksys, logitech mainly) is crap. Before I switched mine over to DD-WRT it was the second most unstable PoS device I've ever used, only surpassed by the Linksys WCG200 which doesn't even have an adequate quality cable modem in it. Since switching it there is only glory, enough features to fill the hole in the Ozone layer and more stable than that superhero that could turn to steel (the russian one, not ironman)
All in all, if I was to set up an office from scratch the WRT54g would be at the top of my list so long as I could put DD-WRT on them.

The Linksys WRT54G and WRT54GS routers have been the number one most popular wireless router devices available for the past few years. So this begs the question why Cisco would snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by needlessly changing an almost perfect product. The fact is that versions 1 -4 of the G and the GS (with Speedboost) versions of this router were fantastic. Those earlier routers run a flexible and powerful Linux based firmware that has been perfected for the past few years a numerous updates and tweaks. However, the earlier WRT54G product has now been replaced with a less powerful wireless product (version 5) that has had its onboard flash RAM chopped in half from 4MB to 2MB and its system RAM cut from 16MB to 8MB. Instead of the flexible, reliable and powerful Linux firmware the new WRT54G version 5 routers run the licensed VxWorks firmware instead. There is nothing wrong with using VxWorks and over time Cisco will probably work out the bugs but for now the newest wireless routers are not reliable.

This is my current home model and I like it. It is a tough little bugger. I have my ADSL Modem in Bridged mode, and this WAP keeps up. I have had no complaints. It has met all of the demands that I have placed on it as a home model.

These are fantastic! we have been running these in an education environment for about 5 years. We reviewed our infrastructure and found that we had been overloading these points by about 50%! (although I wouldn't reccomend it) These are a fantastic point, reliable and easy to use!

At the time, it was the most popular 802.11G router. Plenty of performance and features. Run DD-WRT firmware on it and you've got yourself a $500+ router (and I would give it a 5 star rating).

Older G's were awesome with lots of memory. Harder than a rock and kick ass and chew bubble gum with DDWRT. Newer models stink, get the GL versions.
Currently run two as strictly AP only devices on my WAN, but havent EVER had to restart them.

It was a good router. I upgraded the antennas as it's located in my basement. I use it now only as an AP as I have an open source firewall in place as my router.
I can't remember the last time I have to reboot this device.

Great little router, manages my home network of about 14-15 PCs (about 10 of which are used by individuals via wireless). I use the Tomato firmware on mine. However, its wireless radio seems to be deteriorating and crashing/dropping connections. "Noise floor" keeps getting higher and higher. Definitely not built to last, but adding a dedicated access point makes this an excellent broadband router with a fast CPU and plenty of memory.

A true classic in networking technology. Probably the first thing many people think of when they hear the word router.
Offered great wire speeds and okay wifi speeds. Firmware was untouchable, especially with DDWRT. Got me on the web back in the day when Wifi was still a "mystery"

These devices are very old at this point in time, but man are they rock solid. With 10/100 wired ports and G wifi speed there is no doubt that these are no longer the way to go. However, there is no argument of the reliability of these little devices. The ability to run the DD-WRT open source firmware made them even more valuable. Adding many more custom features no included with the original firmware. This great router has lasted a long time, and we only now have several that are being moved on into the tech afterlife.
