Sports and wildlife beast
I’ve had this for a couple of weeks now and have just one minor complaint. I also have a 45 megapixel Z9 which I love and when people say 24 megapixels isn’t enough for wildlife, that’s just complete bull. It’s plenty even leaving room to crop in but you can’t be unrealistic if the bird or animal is just too far away. The sensor is beautiful and has a lot of character. The only complaint I have is the bump for the thumb rest is uncomfortable. I don’t know if it is because it sticks out too far but I actually started to get a blister.

A great professional mirrorless camera — BUY IT!
After 50 years of being a Nikon shooter, I switched to Canon because of this R3 camera. While it is not perfect in several important areas, this is the best professional stills camera that I've ever owned.
BEST POSITIVES:
1. Great autofocus mode, especially for shooting auto racing.
2. Easy and effective basic movie mode: Just press the red button.
3. Great exposures and natural color reproduction.
4. Comfortable camera-holding ergonomics (very similar to Nikon).
5. Rugged lens mount.
6. Tremendous 24/7, North America based, knowledgeable pro support (even better than Nikon because it is 24/7).
7. Very good compromise between high resolution and reasonable image size for storage.
WORST NEGATIVES/MISSING FEATURES:
1. There are two different types of onboard memory card writers/readers. They should both be the faster CF Express, so that there can be a backup at the same resolution.
2. Too much high ISO noise (compared to my previous Nikon D5 DSLR).
3. Too heavy.
4. Needs a large EVF screen overlay that confirms video recording. The existing one is so small and off to the side that I've not been recording video when I thought that I was, thus missing those shots.
5. Needs more AUTOFOCUS MODES. One should be for airplanes in flight (at air shows).
6. Could benefit from PROGRAM MODES to set up the camera for quickly switching to a few basic automatic modes (fast action, low light, shallow depth of field, maximized depth of field, background blur on panning shots, fireworks, etc.).
7. Could use a dedicated button for sending medium resolution JPEGs to iPhones (would be useful when shooting RAW images).
8. No third party RF lens options (this was especially bad when there were few RF lenses available). Canon should provide info to Tamron (my preferred brand of third party lenses) and Sigma so that they would not have to reverse/engineer their lenses.
My main regret is that I paid $6,000 and now the price has dropped to $4,500.
Buy it!

Canon's Best Camera hands down to date!!!
Coming from an R5,R6, 1DX mkll and 1Dx mklll all I can say is the R3 is the very best of all these camera combined with so many more bonuses. I am constantly finding more and more things this body can do. Says its 24mp however images are equal to 30mp. You cannot go wrong!

Eye control needs to have servo setting, boasted sensitivity.
This is will be difficult to understand, unless you are a NFL shooter. In trying to photograph receivers in a game, it will be great if the eye spot is continuously focusing even when button is half depressed as you don't punch the shutter. Now it requires you to half press to focus, not possible in the time you find the targeted receiver. In shooting two games now with two R3's, I'm missing all the receiver shots. The ball is already in the receiver hands instead of inches from the fingertips. However for other purposes, this is working great. I hope a firmware will give the user this option just as we have between servo and one shot for the regular focusing system, allow it for eye control as well as a sensitivity increase. I know it will require more battery drain, but we carry extra batteries.

R3 will dominate for years to come. Legendary build it just feels oh so right in your hands like a pro camera should! All the other positive reviews are spot so I won't bore you with the highlights of this camera! So if you have the dough, shoot professionally and or want the best well then, this camera will not disappoint.

Good but has room for improvement
Although I’m still getting used to the steep learning curve associated with switching from a Canon 1DX, I feel the Canon EOS R3 is a good mirrorless camera but definitely not a great camera, particularly for wildlife photography. If (hopefully when) Canon introduces a top-of-the-line EOS R1, it will include the suggestions below.
Good features of the R3: 1) The size and weight of the camera is really a nice improvement over the 1DX series, although I do find myself hitting the AF-ON button unintentionally at times (it naturally falls under my thumb while holding the camera). 2) The size of the buffer is a huge improvement over the buffer sizes of the 1D and 1DX series cameras I previously owned. 3) The shutter is extremely quiet. 4) Eye tracking is amazing.
Now for the bad: 1) Eye control – not a fault of the camera but since I wear eyeglasses (progressive focus lenses), eye control doesn’t work for me and I have it turned off. 2) I’d prefer a 45-50 mega pixel sensor. 3) Since I normally do not take video with the camera and save each photo to both cards, I’d prefer having CF Express Type B cards for both card slots instead of an SD card as the second slot. 4) I haven’t been able to find a way to change the set frame per second rates (fps) for the various continuous shooting rates. on the 1DX you can set the continuous shooting speed for high continuous between 2-12 fps and low continuous between 1-11. I set the low to 5 fps which is about the fastest I can shoot at to where I normally can take just 1 image if desired but can also hold down the shutter release for a continuous burst if needed. As far as I can tell with the R3 the continuous low is set to 3 fps for all drive modes and can’t be changed (nor can the other higher rates be changed except in custom high-speed continuous - see note 6 below). 5) The cover to protect the multi-function shoe is a joke (I lost mine the second time I used the camera and had to buy a spare, once it became available, that I have to tape in place to reduce the chance of it accidentally being dislodged and lost). 6) Custom high-speed continuous shooting: I’d like to see this modified so that it would work more like the Pro Capture feature that the Olympus OM-1 four thirds camera has where the camera begins recording at a user-selected rate (e.g. 30 fps) once the shutter button is pressed half-way down and saves up to a user-selected number of recorded images (e.g. up to 60 or so) when the shutter is fully depressed but doesn’t save any of the images if the shutter release is not fully depressed. Currently Canon’s custom high-speed continuous shooting allows you to set a frame rate up to 195 fps for up to 50 images that are recorded beginning when the shutter release is fully depressed. I really don’t see much of a need to take 50 images in a little over a quarter of a second (i.e. 195 fps divided by 50 images = 0.256 sec). Since I do a lot of bird photography where a bird might fly to a perch before flying to a bird feeder or water feature, I’d love to be able to begin recording the bird on the perch in anticipation of it flying to the feeder or water, tract it all the way to the feeder, and then fully depress the shutter so that I save the flight shots (at a set rate of maybe 20-30 fps) without filling the cards with an unknown number of shots of the bird perched while I’m waiting for it to fly to the feeder or water. 7) Finally, the manual for the R3 is horrible. The Instruction Manual provided with the camera is totally worthless – it is basically a how to turn on the camera for dummies and not much more. The 1,074-page Advanced User’s Guide (that you have to download at Canon’s website) doesn’t even have an index to make it easier to locate a topic. It would be nice to have a more compact version of the Advanced User’s Guide (that includes an index) included with the camera.
Hopefully if Canon makes an R1 mirrorless it will include most of these suggestions.

After having a mix of APS-C sensor bodies and full frames, it was time to take the leap. The R3 doesn't disappoint. Bigger batteries, bigger sensor (than an APS-C), bigger photos. If you want to elevate your photography and have great low light photos, the R3 is the camera for you. Go from being ordinary to extra-ordinary!

It’s trying to do too much and missing the mark in multiple areas
Had it a year now. It’s fast and when it works right it’s the best camera out there but there’s so many dumb things and issues about it. I do event photography for a major wire service. I’ve been doing it for 17yrs and never had any of the issues I have with this camera. The iso wheel moves any time the camera is on your shoulder and so when I pick it back up to shoot my iso will be on 1600 or so when I set it to 400. I can put the camera in lock mode but I change fstop sometimes in the middle of shooting a photo to give myself multiple exposures and I can’t do that when it’s locked. The focus point constantly moves on you and you have to reset it back to the middle. It’s horrible in low light with a flash. I use the EL-1. There’s no assist beam from the flash bc this camera is mirrorless and so if you’re in a dark room with minimal light as I am for many events, the camera struggles to find a focus and I have to turn the bulb on some times. If you’re shooting a full length of someone and punch in quick for a half length or headshot the focus has to be completely reset and you have to give yourself a solid second to refocus. Otherwise the camera will be focused somewhere in the background. My 1Dx Mark II has none of these issues. There’s no way to shut off the back screen when you’re in between shots so it burns battery. My 1dx screen is only on for a 1-2 second preview of whatever I just shot which this does but then this screen stays on and thinks you’re shooting in live view mode. They’re trying to cater to too many demographics with this camera. It’s a pro/amateur camera whereas cameras like the 1Dx line were strictly professional. Professional photogs don’t use swivel screens. We don’t need the extra buttons or junk. We just want a pro-line camera that only does what we tell it to do. The one plus this has over other cameras is the Retna focus. I shoot dodgers games and boxing matches in addition to events and using the Retna focus in those environments has been helpful, especially boxing where your focus point is constantly changing as the boxers rotate and move. All you have to do is look at whichever one you want in focus. I hope the R1 or whatever comes next takes care of all these issues. I haven’t bought a second R3 because of its faults. I keep my 1Dx Mark II as my second camera. That thing is a work horse.

Great autofocus for car racing; easy video
As a freelance member of the press, I cover a wide variety of events, including several pro auto races each year, so I need a top-of-the-line, best-of-the-best, professional mirrorless camera with fast, reliable autofocus for shooting auto racing. The Canon R3's car autofocus mode is excellent for car racing, keeping focus on the subject even when I am panning with the car and something briefly comes between me and the car.
Additionally the Canon R3 fits in the hands comfortably, and is even easy to hold one-handed.
When I need to shoot in quiet places, the Canon R3 is quiet, too. it has enough megapixels for my needs, while enabling high speed bursts without eating up too much space on my memory cards or later, on my office hard drives.
The Canon R3's tilt screen makes it easy to shoot over people's heads, like during race winners' podium ceremonies.
Battery life is long, and the batteries are easy to swap.
The default video mode allows me to shoot video at the press of a single button — there is no need to switch the Canon R3 to video mode.
It is not perfect, however. I wish it could use the same high speed, high capacity memory cards in both card slots, so that I could save RAW images on the backup drive at speeds as fast as the other drive's. Instead, I have to backup to JPEGs to maintain high shooting speeds.
Also, there are not enough of a variety of RF lenses available yet, For photojournalism, I need a dust-sealed, weather-resistant, tough L-Series lens that can zoom from quite wide to long telephoto, and that zooms smoothly and effortlessly for when I shoot video. 28-300mm is what I used to use, and would like to shoot with again — but RF, so that I will not need adapt an old lens.
Since I wear eyeglasses, when I shoot video I cannot easily see the video recording icon. As a result, I often discover too late that am not recording video when I think that I am. There needs to be a more easily seen recording indicator — perhaps a red border around the entire viewfinder, or perhaps a faint red diagonal line across the viewfinder.
Overall I really like the Canon R3 and I highly recommend it.

Very Happy!
I use an R5 for portrait work (replaced my 5DM4), wanted a 2nd body specifically for recreational photography. Previously I had a 7DM2 with the EF-S 17-55 F2.8, EF 70-200 F2.8 L IS USM II, and EF 100-400 L IS USM II. I was hoping to recreate my recreational photography kit based on the R7, but, the R7 was not to the R5, as the 7DM2 was to the 5DM4 imo (specifications wise, it might have been - ergonomically, it did not seem so.) So I sold the R7 and bought an R3 - combined with the RF L series glass, the R3 checks all the boxes for features and meets all expectations for performance, and since I am used to using my R5 with the WFT-R10A attached, the R3 really does feel similar to the R5 ergonomically.

Great camera. Bought it 14 months ago and have shot 1.3 million sports photos with it. The high frame rate helps get that one pic with the ball on the finger tips and the soccer ball flattened by the player's head.

Best purchase I've made in a while!
I am absolutely overjoyed to have purchased the R3 and excited for the images and video I will be able to capture. Before getting the R3 I had been shooting an R6. I watched several videos on the R3 prior to purchase and thought I had a pretty good idea of what to expect. When I actually got it in my hands and began to set it up, I was amazed to discover the true capabilities of the R3 and the labyrinth of customizable options. I truly enjoy shooting the R3 and it is an absolute game-changer. During set-up I maximize options by leaving and using dedicated buttons as set, and not taking up an additional button to serve those functions. I am still tweaking the settings and finding more ways to make the most of this great camera.

The Best Camera Ever!!!!!
I've had my R3 for about 2 weeks now I can't and don't want to put it down!!!!! Best camera I've ever owned and finally my first pro body!!!!! I started getting into photography in 2009 with a Canon Rebel. I graduated to the 50D, then the 60D, to the 5D Mark II, finally followed by the 5D Mark III. I always wanted a 1D system but it was far out of my reach. When I seen mirrorless cameras I knew that was the future but, Canon wasn't gonna go there quickly. So I waited until they released the R I immediately sold all DSLR gear when that happened. The mirrorless technology coupled with the RF glass was everything I was waiting for. I finally got he R5 and R6. My photography business shooting weddings, senior and family portraits skyrocketed. I drooled over the R3 for 2 years and now finally I have it and I love it!!!! The autofocusing system in this camera is absolutely insane. The colors are true to life. The dynamic range is stellar and lowlight performance is nothing short of amazing!!!! Thank you Canon!!!!!

Good but not Great.
Good but lacks a few key features to be 5/5 hybrid camera.
Pros:
- Great Ergonomics
- Great Viewfinder
- Great button layout and controls
- Good at higher iso (eg: 6400)
- Good Autofocus
- Good All-Around camera
- Good/OK battery life
Cons:
- Lacks Shutter Angle to be a truly "no hassle" hybrid that can switch from photo to video effortlessly.
- Video assist tools are very "primitive" compared to other cameras in this price range.
- Connecting Wirelessly to iPhone is still buggy. Frequently fails to connect.
- Lacks options for a wired connection to iPhone. You need third party paid apps to do this (eg: Capture One)
- Lacks compatibility with latest MacOS (no EOS Utility)
Conclusion: for a top of the line $5000 camera, it feels a little bit unpolished and lacking in features compared to similarly priced top of the line cameras. Hopefully many of these issues can be solved via firmware update. If they can, this will be a great camera.

Simply…..AWESOME !
Such an amazing camera. I’ve been shooting Canon cameras since my first SLR in 1971 — an FTb-QL that I bought in a pawn shop. I’ve progressed through MANY Canon cameras since then, but the R3 is the first new camera that has impressed me as much as this one has. The sensor is amazingly crisp and sharp; the AF options are virtually infinite, the eye-tracking is surreal; and the fit/form/function of this camera is simply stunning. Thanks again Canon, for restoring my faith in your technology.

Hands down the best camera I have ever used
I came from the 1dx mkll and lll to the r6 and r5. Mirrorless took me in a different direction the my slr cameras but though the r6 and r5 were nice even having the grip on them left e wanting more! Battery life was no where as good as the mkll and mklll UNTIL the r3, this thing is a beast and I have not even tapped into 50% of what the camea offers. It has all the best features of the 1dx mklll and the r5 combined and with 24mp over the mklll's 20mp you really notice the difference. Is it perfect? Nope! But show me one that is! Still hands down Canon's finest camera to date. Cannot wait for the r1!

An absolutely brilliant camera, when it works.
The touch and feel of this camera are sublime. It really represents a tremendous amount of thoughtfulness and refinement. The grip and rubber texture feel like nothing else. It's fast. SO FAST. Eye control works and it works very well for me. The video looks gorgeous. The controls are so customizable that it really takes a while to simply choose how to set the camera up to my taste.
I could use more megapixels for sure but for the bulk of my shooting it is more than enough, and for the rest I use my R5.
It is a 5, 6, or 7 star camera except for one flaw. It freezes. I'm not the only person to report it either, but it basically becomes inoperable (controls stop working, you can't release shutter). I have to turn it off-and-on for it to come back to life.
The main reason I boast about Canon and stick with Canon is because of reliability. That makes it so I rarely have to interface with Canon's customer service which I'm mostly reluctant to do. I dread having to send this camera in for repair or replacement.
So that's why it's 4 stars. It freezes, and reliability is the main reason I use Canon, because of the incredible level of accountability my clients require of me. Thank god the R5 is in the kit as well so I have a backup.

Eye focus needs work
I am a wedding and family portrait photographer. After hearing that this camera would watch your eye to adjust focus I was intrigued. I currently have an R6 and there are times when the focus will adjust to the back of someones head while being trained on someone's eye. However, after calibrating the focus tracking to my eye it would have trouble finding a focus point and would hunt for focus making me miss moments. I couldn't justify keeping the camera

Canon R3 review
Phenomenal autofocus, good ergonomics that are very familiar for 1DX users, great quality images, and outrageous speed. You have to be judicious in how fast you shoot or you will waste time culling photos.
The camera requires you to spend some time learning how it works - you won't get the benefits without working at it. I feel like I'm moving from a Mazda Miata to a mid-engine Corvette. It's worth it, but it's not as easy as the transition from a 1DX to a 1DX-II.

Great, but could have been bettter
All in all a great camera. Areas of improvement would include…Two CFE type B cards would have been preferred. I feel like there could have been a better balance of FPS and Megapixels. Most sports photographers don’t request more than 20 FPS. We also have to crop a lot, so having somewhere between 30-34 Megapixels would have been more useful than 30 FPS. Being able to use the RATE button for any custom function would also be useful. Shocked at the minimal improvement of high ISO performance over the Mark III.

Omg changing Aperture automatically in M mode
The camera is changing aperture automatically in M mode while using rf zoom lens
28-70
When zoom in it’s changing the aperture by itself
I don’t if it’s software or a hardware
That’s ridiculous

Best Auto focus yet
Best auto focusing camera I have ever owned from Canon. I started using pro cameras with the 1Dx Mark III, then Mark IV, 1Dx, 1Dx II, then skipped the hybrid and went with an R5. The R5 for fast birds in flight was a bit of a disappointment as it is very slow to acquire focus with something that darts in fast. The R3 on the other hand is the closest to using a dslr, and the focus is fast and accurate. Best auto focusing camera Canon has ever produced.
