Know your gear

Some items like your keys or wallet you just take everywhere you go because you just never know. For anyone with an EOS R series camera, add the RF50mm F1.8 STM lens to that list. As part of the EOS R System, it's nice and compact thanks to its RF mount so you can shoot - and get a great shot - anywhere and anytime. Size isn't all though. As a fixed focal length lens, it lets you be creative with composition and can be used for a wide range of scenes from snapshots to portraits, landscapes to low-light situations and more. Those images will stand out, too, just like you intend whether on social media, or when sharing or printing, thanks to impressive optical features like a PMo aspherical lens to suppress aberrations, Super Spectra coating to reduce flaring and ghosting, and a large f/1.8 aperture for low-light shooting and beautiful bokeh. Pick it up and use it one time and you'll see for yourself, and you won't be able to leave the house without it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth it !! After using the RF 50mm for about three weeks and shooting over 100 images, I'm going to give the lens 5 stars. This lens produces good quality images and the viewing angle (50mm) is useful for a wide variety of photography. And with a wide aperture of F 1.8, it works well in low lighting situations. At a current price of $200 as of August 2024, I think this is a very useful lens to have.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice and compact and fun to use After purchasing the new to me Canon EOS RP with the RF 24-105 this was the next lens I decided to get after reading the positive reviews and knowing that a 50mm is a lens that has always been part of my equipment in the past. I can only say it has turned out to be a sound decision and the lens is going to get a lot of use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good, for the price. The RF 50mm lens is a decent lens. It is a great lens for the price. If you are looking for a decent portrait lens but don’t plan on using it much, this is a good option.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nifty Fifty for EOS R50, etc. I am completely satisfied with the item. It does just what is described on the Amazon site as well as the Canon USA site. The quality and workmanship is excellent. See sample photo.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good, inexpensive 50 This is a very good lens for the price. It's reasonably sharp, but not necessarily tack sharp wide open, but stop down a little bit it performs very well in the center and edges. It's a very good, inexpensive all around lens. It does not have stabilization, so on a non stabilized body like my RP, you'll have to shoot at faster speeds ( and correspondingly higher ISOs) than you may prefer. It's inexpensive enough that it makes a great fast complementary lens to the 24-105f7.1, and takes up minimal space in a camera bag. As an advanced amateur, I'd recommend this to anyone short of people who make their living with their gear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The most brilliant concept ever If you know what you are doing, you can buy this lens today, take it with you to capture some event, and return your investment the very same day. 50 mm is the focal length when people start looking good, and f/1.8 is just enough to blur the background (in most cases). F/2.8 is impressive, and this is - two times better and 20 times less expensive. Some strange reviews are complaining that the edges are soft at f/1.8. As a photographer, I know that if I'm using f/1.8 there is something important in the center and the rest should be soft. If there are several people that can fill the entire frame, you need higher f to compensate the distance anyway, thus... I don't understand the complain. Some people are complaining about vignetting, which is also your friend. Back to the lens itself. It's amazingly small, because it doesn't need the adapter and with the focusing ring becoming "a universal ring" it's completely changing ergonomics and the way camera can be used. For this price, it's unbeatable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Lens Excellent lens - works smoothly and has a very fast focus with my Canon RP. I like having the additional ring for camera settings as well - nicely placed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good not great Not the best but not the worst. This lens fit a niche as a light and bright 50mm. I'd say the EQ is reasonable but not what one can get from far more expensive and heavier options. But, it is easy to carry and works.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Nifty Fifty It is the RF version of the nifty fifty. It is fifty, but not so nifty at 200 bones. That isn't much of an issue if you are buying RF lenses because of the increase prices across the board. I bought the new mirror less 50mm from a competitor and this is a much better deal. The lens does make noise when focusing if that is something you worry about. Otherwise it is a great little walk around lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens Excellent 50 mm lens, as expected from Canon. This is a compact, very well made lens. The control ring is an awesome feature.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not Much Improved but Everyone Should Have a Nifty Fifty It's a fine lens. Every Canon shooter should have a Nifty Fifty in their bag. They're very packable, and provide acceptable image quality for a variety of scenarios. The 50mm focal length, the no matter which lens, is a good all-arounder. The new RF version seems a bit more solidly built than the most recent EF iteration. It doesn't do anything exceptionally well, but it's "fine" for general shooting, and the price point is very affordable. If you already have the latest EF 50 1.8 STM, the only major driver to update to this lens is to eliminate the adapter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow what an amazing little lens I bought this lens last week for me canon EOS R and I must say after watching many talking head videos i was starting to regret the purchase before it arrived. Now that I have it and have had the chance to use it all I can say is wow. It is an incredibly small lens on the R and is very discrete. The image quality is sharp and amazing for both portraits and landscape. I think this is a must have lens its small and sharp. I do not at all regret this purchase. I only wish hat it came with a lens hood.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surprised I'm using this on the RP body. Reviews are so mixed on this lens that I really didn't know what to expect. Some lenses do not test well on technical reviews but work wonderfully in real world use. This is one of those lenses. My first image blew me away. I'm very happy. It feels good in hand and appears to be well made. It's just a great low element count lens that produces beautiful true to life images. Don't judge it by its price. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is due to its widely known f/1.8 shortcomings. I don't shoot at f/1.8 so I don't care. Highly recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens just don't get it wet. RF 50MM that on Canons EOS R50 1.61 APS-C Crop is more like 80-81 ish. I love 80-85mm range for my photography it feels so good to take photos in that range and most of the time when I look at a scene thats where my brain goes. I love how cheap this lens is you can get it for like a really good price if you look around and on sales. This lens is also not waterproof as it's not an L lens and doesn't get the fancy red ring. Once again as a landscape photographer in the pacific northwest that is a large issue! I feel like a broken record but it really does suck. I do however love how this lens renders and I think it's wonderful the whole thing is great it's just a shame about the Dust and rain issues with canons cheaper gear.
