The RF 70-200 mm f2.8 L IS USM has been designed to achieve the much loved 70-200 mm zoom range in just 146 mm (at it's shortest length). This makes the lens approximately 27% shorter and 28% lighter than it's EF equivalent.

???? great, compact, agile picture taking lens
Great lens, great pictures, I like that the lens extends when you zoom compared to the internal zoom type lens type, that helps with the space the lens takes in my backpack. Its a very quick, agile shooting lens. I have it paired with my R5C

I got this as my first RF lens because it is most the one I wanted to be lighter. It's fabulous and paired with my R5, was taking sharp hand held images of my kitten in low light at 1/60.

My favorite lens of all time.
I was a prime-lens only shooter before buying my first telephoto. After the initial hurdle of learning how to shoot with such a large lens I fell in love. The image quality is out of this world. Focus is instant and silent. I feel like I can shoot anything beautifully with this lens. Can't recommend it enough.

I switched to Canon because of this wonderful lens
After with the competition, this lens finally pulled me to Canon, and I couldn't be happier. No one else has anything like this.
At 70mm, the lens handles like a mid-range f2.8 zoom lens. It's handy for quick shots of the kids. It's a portrait lens that reaches out for distant action. This will have a very different and broader use than a long and unwieldy traditional 70-200 f2.8. This could almost be a "normal" lens - maybe add a pancake 35mm in your pocket and you've got it covered.
Keep up the bold innovations, Canon!

Amazing sharpness, super fast focus, 2.8 L lens - I thought it would be for my kids' hockey games and practices (indoors, medium distance, but this lens is great to carry around on a casual day. At 200/2.8 beautiful bokeh isolates subjects, at 70/8+ it captures social settings. Expensive, but worth it.

Totally surprised this lens is not compatible with either the 1.4 or 2X RF extenders. It worked with the RF 100-500mm, which I returned because it was not a high quality lens. Very disappointed in the RF series so far.

A Must Lens in your Lens Collection
The Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Lens is tack sharp edge to edge and I use it quite a bit from sporting events to portraits. This lens produces stunning images and is a must in your camera lens collection. I am happy that I went with this lens and made the switch from my Canon EOS 5D Mark IV over to the mirrorless Canon EOS R5 System. The RF lenses are absolutely worth their price since the images they produce are better than the already great Canon DSLR camera and lenses. This new version of the 70-200mm f/2.8 is much smaller and lighter than my previous Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM so I use it without the collar and no longer need a lens plate to mount to my tripod.

Wonderful, Yet Expensive, Lens.
So far the switch to the R5 and R6 with RF glass has been great. The 70-200 is sharp, and comparativly compact vs the old EF version. The price can easily be argued as to high. but it's a must have lens for what I shoot.

Where No Lens Has Gone Before
After capturing thousands of great sports photos over several years, my EF 70-200mm f2.8 L IS stopped focusing properly right in the middle of the championship round of an NCAA Regional wrestling tournament I was covering. But what could have been a horror story instead had a happy ending.
My RF 24-105mm f4 L had enough reach to capture the rest of the tournament, thanks in part to my EOS R6's lowlight performance. And repairing the 70-200 took only a few days from the time I shipped it until Canon had it back on my porch. The turnaround was quick enough that I had the lens back in time for my next assignment. I credit that to my Canon Professional Services membership, which also saved me literally hundreds of dollars on the repair.
But my favorite part of this story is that this incident gave me an excuse to buy an RF70-200mm f2.8 L for my EOS R5 and R6 bodies. I was very happy with the adapted EF lens' sharpness, and focusing speed and accuracy, and would've been content to keep it awhile.
Had the EF not crapped out, I wouldn't have known what I was missing. What was that? An even better performing lens in virtually every way, according to my unscientific assessment. The RF's focusing is faster and more accurate, and it produces more keepers than the EF. It's images are consistently sharper and brighter than those captured by the EF, at least to my eyes. After reviewing the first few hundred shots captured with the RF, my wife, who has her own EF 70-200, agreed.
Finally, I've fallen head-over-heals in love with the RF's form factor. It is slightly chubbier than the EF, which hasn't been a detriment in the least. But even if I minded the girth, I'd gladly accept it knowing that the RF is inches shorter than the EF when both lenses are set to 70mm. The difference is dramatic when you're shoehorning an EF 70-200 attached to a body into a camera bag. Paraphrasing Capt. James T. Kirk, the RF 70-200 goes where no EF 70-200 has gone.
I wholly, totally, and unequivocally love this lens. Since I shoot a lot of ice hockey rink-side and typically press the lens hood of my 70-200 against the glass to reduce reflections, I wish the RF barrel didn't expand and contract as it zooms in and out. But the lens feels so good in the hand, handles so well, and comes with such a sturdy lens hood that I've hardly been bothered by the expansion/contraction. It's actually a very small price to pay for a very small lens that delivers big results on every other level.

Love the RF lens but...
I used the EF model with a succession of camera bodies and moved to the series II which was even better. The 1.4 Extender was the icing on the cake. extending my reach when photographing my favorite subjects, Alaska's large and dangerous wild animals. Image my disappointment when I learned that the new extender and lens are incompatible! Please Canon, manufacture compatible extenders for this lens! I would like to continue to take photos like the ones included here, and the extender made them possible.

One lens - many uses
This lens is the latest version of the 'zoom lens family' I recommend when only one lens can be taken on photographic trip. I've taken the EF 70-200mm F2.8 L on multiple trips to Europe and the RF 70-200mm F2.8L is a further refinement of those capabilities at lower weight for mirrorless cameras. The RF 70-200mm F2.8 L further extends the low light capability, particularly in European cathedrals and museums where supplemental flash or tripods are not allowed. At the 70mm aperture it can be useful in inconspicuous street photography, especially when a slightly elevated shooting position such as a staircase or peak of a hill is available.

No Replacement Parts and Poor Customer Support
I bought this lens 18 months ago. The IQ is excellent and I like that it is compact. I have no complaints regarding the lens itself. What is extremely disappointing is that when I needed to put on the tripod collar after 18 months of handholding the lens, I found it did not fit and would not lock into place. Since it was no longer under warranty I could not send it back to the company. BUT, what is worse is that Canon does make, stock and sell this replacement part (Ring E WIII) and the customer service department claims it is not listed on the "box contents" and that it does not ship with the lens (even though I pointed out that it appears on all of the pictures). So, beware that the tripod collar does NOT officially ship with the lens, that it MAY not fit, and you may NOT be able to get a Canon replacement if it does not.

It took me at least 6 months to fully adjust to the new focusing style, but it's an amazing lens and a great upgrade. With this new firmware update, it's even better. There is less vignetting and abberation with this new glass. I appreciate how small it can go to fit in my bag now.

My Holy Grail Lens
I recently purchased the Canon RF 70-200mm lens and I am blown away by its performance. The lens is incredibly sharp and produces stunning bokeh. The image stabilization is top-notch and the autofocus is fast and accurate. The build quality is excellent and the lens feels solid in my hands.
The focal length range is perfect for portraits, wildlife, and sports photography. The aperture range of f/2.8 allows for great low-light performance and beautiful depth of field. The telescoping design of the lens makes it compact and easy to carry around.
Overall, I highly recommend the Canon RF 70-200mm lens to anyone looking for a high-quality telephoto zoom lens. It’s an amazing lens that delivers exceptional results every time

A couple of little annoyances
Having used similar EF lenses I was somewhat perturbed when I discovered that the zoom and focus rings were switched. This is taking some getting used to. Also I usually use the tripod collar to support such lenses in my hand but to do so I need to keep it a little loose so that I can switch to vertical and back. By keeping it loose, it has a tendency to detach from the lens. Came close to dropping it once so I discontinued using the tripod collar unless I need to put it on a tripod.

Longevity is dissapointing.
This is my second 70-200 2.8 lens from canon, I purchased this RF for my new camera 11/30/2023. Used at over 90 professional shoots through the year (mostly fast-paced live theatre performance), then suddenly on 12/11/2024 the zoom ring felt sticky and jammed a few minutes later. It is being fixed, thankfully, because I purchased CarePak Plus. Otherwise, it is a few days outside of the standard one year warranty. It has suffered no damage or drops, just the normal wear and tear of my use wore something out and caused it to fail. My previous 70-200 EF lens lasted over 8 years with no issues at all. So I am very disappointed in the longevity of this lens for the price tag. Otherwise the performance of the lens is great, you just need to match your lens settings and camera settings to the subjects you are capturing, and you will be a happy camper! However, i would really suggest investing in the carepak plus to cover function of the lens past the standard warranty.
