Integrating automation and reporting while ensuring smooth workflow management
What is our primary use case?
We are running different types of workloads on HPE Alletra Storage, and it provides us with good performance.
What is most valuable?
We purpose-built it for a specific requirement, consuming features like encryption and deduplication between sites. It offers good deduplication ratios, comparing well with Pure Storage. HPE Alletra Storage helps simplify storage operations, integrating with vCenter. Many modern storages provide a unified view, which we utilize. Overall, it has streamlined our analysis process, thanks to automation and reporting features.
For how long have I used the solution?
We recently started consuming HPE Alletra Storage.
What was my experience with deployment of the solution?
We have not seen any performance issues. In fact, it assists in monitoring IOPS fluctuations and analyzing transaction patterns. We do monthly analyses of our storage consumption trajectory.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
HPE Alletra Storage provides predictable performance and capacity.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We have not faced any scalability issues with HPE Alletra Storage.
How are customer service and support?

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We already had Pure Storage and replaced Nimble Storage, leading us to adopt HPE Alletra Storage for the upgrade.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was straightforward, taking about two and a half weeks from data center configuration to full provisioning and testing.
What about the implementation team?
Our internal team handled the deployment. The backend physical setup was simpler, while the process took time for completion.
What was our ROI?
I will know more about ROI in a couple of months as we recently commissioned the storage. So far, it is breaking even with our investment plans.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I cannot quantify the cost reduction yet, but modern storages come with many features that benefit customers.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
The consideration was an upgrade from Nimble, and so we evaluated HPE Alletra Storage.
What other advice do I have?
I rate HPE Alletra Storage an eight or nine. I would like to see further support for features like ransomware protection. Exploring Alletra MP in the future could be beneficial. The current interface is satisfactory.

Predictive analysis and artificial intelligence create unmatched stability for hybrid cloud solutions
What is our primary use case?
We are using HPE Alletra Storage primarily for backup projects. Two companies are backed up with HPE Alletra Storage, connected by SAN infrastructure with a Brocade switch and HP servers. We have Commvault implemented on it, making the backup in virtual environments like VMware. We are backing up both on-premise and to the cloud.
What is most valuable?
HPE Alletra Storage is 100% stable and is the best in the market, although slightly expensive. It is very easy to implement, with highly effective artificial intelligence and great software. We use HPE InfoSight for predictive analysis, generating reports to prevent issues. The combination with HPE support creates a perfect solution for sustaining customer environments. This solution simplifies storage operations and provides predictable performance and capacity for applications.
What needs improvement?
HPE Alletra Storage is considered expensive compared to competitors like Dell and Huawei. Many times, we lose deals due to price even though it is the best solution in the market.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
HPE Alletra Storage is 100% stable, and no other solution offers such complete stability.
How are customer service and support?
HPE support is considered the best department in the company, backed by HPE InfoSight solutions.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
In the past, we used Nimble storage, but we did not implement it last year. Instead, we used HPE Alletra Storage.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup of HPE Alletra Storage was straightforward and easy to deploy. The infrastructure, including servers and storage, was completed in less than a week.
What about the implementation team?
I am a manager, not an architect, but we have an architect who handled the setup process.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The product is known to be expensive. In many situations, we compare it with competitors like Dell and Huawei, and the pricing often makes us lose the competition.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Dell, Huawei

High performance and seamless management redefine data storage capabilities
What is our primary use case?
We supply the hardware to customers for their data storage needs. It is primarily for customers who require an extreme number of IOs and fast on-demand storage. The customers who opt for this usually have a larger budget and are not cost-sensitive, in a nutshell.
What is most valuable?
From my perspective, the management and upgradeability of the product are valuable. The technology uses NVME for increased storage, latency, high bandwidth, and sub-millisecond response times. Even under stringent usage, customers opt for Alletra for its high performance. We find the way we can replicate, use snapshots, secure data, and manage it very beneficial. The ability for independent management is another advantage.
What needs improvement?
I would say that maybe the user interface and experience could be improved. There are a few areas where enhancements can be made. One can find everything, but sometimes it requires time to navigate. Over time, I am sure engineers will provide input to categorize customizable features better. Maybe that's the only area that needs a few adjustments. Otherwise, this has been revolutionary and has made management ten times easier than it was ten years ago.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have used the solution for around four months, but I have been training on it for a bit longer than that.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It runs for five years without fail, and even if a component is not changed immediately, it would still continue running. Obviously, it will give the red light and send alerts, but it remains operational. So, I can say it is extremely resilient.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It does scale well. Evidence for this is the ability to add components and upgrade storage while the storage array is still running. I can just add it to particular groups, RAID groups, or others, so most definitely.
How are customer service and support?
The customer service has improved dramatically. They are extremely quick to respond. When the problem reaches level one before escalation, logs and XML logs have already been taken and sent over. Within three hours, HPE is calling and providing a call to action or escalating to level two if necessary. The service has improved significantly, especially with the Alletra division of HPE.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Neutral
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I have worked a lot with HPE 3PAR. Our company was the first to bring it into Africa, so I was well-versed with 3PAR from the time they used spinning disks to when they used the HPE 50 3PAR storage array, which is all-flash. 3PAR took it to another level, but Alletra and GreenLake have impressed me utterly and totally and made life easier.
How was the initial setup?
I find it straightforward because I have been working with HPE hardware and software since 2011. I have seen how HPE works and the expectations for deployment, and it has been fluid. This has been simple, nothing complicated. Rack and stack are easier over the years. It is extremely easy to install, get your IP addresses and details, and everything is up and running. The process is seamless, especially since I have worked with it before, making it a lot easier.
What about the implementation team?
Two staff members, yes. I would always do it with just my other colleague in my team. We work extremely well together, especially when giving the customer confidence. No more than two engineers are needed on site, to help carry the equipment safely. We have particular duties when we power on the machine. No more than two engineers are necessary.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
I have worked with Nutanix and Pure Storage, including FlashArray, FlashBlade array, and FlashStack array. I am getting certified on high levels of Pure Storage. I have also worked with Dell and deployed them as well. HPE is the main focus of our company, alongside Pure Storage.
What other advice do I have?
I would give them a presentation on the essentials they need to be aware of, and tell them to ask all the questions in detail. I would demonstrate the performance in actual use. If needed, I’d suggest scheduling a proof of concept to justify aligning a budget for this product. I would rate it a nine out of ten because nothing can ever be perfect. I rate the overall solution a nine out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Hybrid Cloud

Enables scaling without disruptions and guarantees data availability
What is our primary use case?
We have deployed it across our on-premises setup. We have two data centers, with our clusters distributed between them. There is a synchronous replication between all those clusters for complete data protection and business continuity.
How has it helped my organization?
The guarantee of data availability is very important for our organization because the revenue and productivity depend on the critical data, which is segregated between different tiers as per the application mapping. This data is extremely valuable for us in running our business operations and generating continuous revenue.
We started seeing the benefits immediately after the deployment of this platform. We could see the benefits in terms of reduction in outages, controlled backup scenarios, encryption, etc.
Alletra helps simplify storage operations, such as provisioning and day-to-day management, and it also lowers the cost of data protection because the service level agreements are very achievable. A complete flash array architecture enables us to leverage all high-performance GPUs and CPUs within the cluster.
Alletra provides a cloud-like operational model on-prem for managing data infrastructure. It enables all third-party integrations that we are looking for, thus saving a lot of time, effort, and energy.
Alletra provides complete data protection integrity. About 90% to 98% of our operational time is using intent-based provisioning, and our overall objectives are met with this platform.
Alletra saves a lot of time in managing the complete storage architecture as well as planning the budget. We can easily provision more storage. When needed, we can immediately add more arrays, and we are good.
The overall cost along with the tied bundle services is quite favorable for us. We are saving a lot of money after procuring Alletra. There are about 30% savings as compared to our previous platform. We have also saved on resources. Earlier, we had ten resources for management and operations, whereas now, we have six resources.
What is most valuable?
The most important feature is scalability, which enables us to rapidly scale without any disruptions. We can easily scale up to more arrays without stopping any services. In-line expansion of arrays is possible without disrupting current data. There is asynchronous replication across these clusters for comprehensive data protection and business continuity.
What needs improvement?
I do not have any areas of improvement as such. We have achieved all our defined objectives and metrics. Everything is performing well with no major problems or complaints and complete data protection. However, it could benefit from integrating an AI assistant module to streamline data migration between different vendor arrays in a more automated fashion.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using HPE Alletra Storage since 2021.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Since deployment, we have not faced any downtime, data leakage, data loss, synchronization, or module failure challenges. Aside from other minor operational issues that are similar to those of other vendors and technology solutions, there have been no major disruptions affecting performance.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Alletra provides modular, non-disruptive scale-up and scale-out. Alletra is crucial for scenarios where time-sensitive applications are running and relying on data storage volumes. If such features were missing in the platform, it would be challenging to maintain productivity and collaboration within our organization.
How are customer service and support?
We are happy with the quality and speed based on the severity of the issue. Whenever I submitted a case with a defined level of priority, I received excellent responses. About 99.9% of my problems were resolved when I contacted them for technical or non-technical issues. I would rate them a ten out of ten.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We used Hitachi previously. We chose Alletra because of its operational simplicity, scalability, and stability. The cost factor was also important.
How was the initial setup?
Initially, the setup was difficult for us. The approach we followed in our legacy environment made the migration challenging. However, after completing the preliminary steps, everything proceeded smoothly, and everything is now updated without issues.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Its pricing is very competitive.
What other advice do I have?
I would rate Alletra a ten out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Enables us to check every metric, including bandwidth and latency, at a granular level
What is our primary use case?
We typically use Alletra NVMe drives for high-performance applications requiring more than 200,000 IOPS per second. We also have HPE's 3PAR, the most advanced version of the storage array. It can address most application issues and has less than 2 millisecond latency.
How has it helped my organization?
We had faced issues with 3PAR because the drives slowed down, and we constantly had to change the capacity. There was too much incoming data, and the CTDs were always full. We needed some compression, deduplication, and provisioning. Even after applying all these techniques, we still faced some issues with space.
But Alletra has high-capacity NVMe drives, so we no longer have a problem. There are no spikes, regardless of our incoming IOPS or my customer's application requirements. The solution immediately addresses the needs of any applications.
Also, you need not worry about backend vulnerabilities. It is an awesome product. You deploy and run it without worrying about what's happening at the security level. It's better than other storage classes like MSS. These NVMe models have played a significant role here.
We achieve storage availability by maximizing usable storage while minimizing hardware storage requirements. We have almost three petabytes of data space, and we're only using one petabyte, leaving two petabytes available.
What is most valuable?
We have the most advanced HPE products available that we can monitor with the HP InfoSight feature, which enables us to check every metric, including bandwidth and latency, at a granular level. Alletra's mechanism is excellent and can handle multiple traffic sources. Anything is possible. Regarding your application, the IO behavior can be random, sequential, or a database. It serves web and e-commerce applications better.
HP InfoSight lets you see all the alerts from SSMC and proactively log cases. It will automatically raise a ticket to HPE when critical hardware fails. You get an idea about what will happen and be proactive. You can see when a node will restart so we can investigate and work with support. We can also see how nodes and ports are performing.
DataCare helps you manage allocation mapping and firmware upgrades. We can also replace drives, troubleshoot, set up applications, update proxies, and take backups through DataCare.
What needs improvement?
More training videos would help. We could learn some best practices. Sometimes, people may not follow the best practices and reach out to support, who will tell them that they need to follow these best practices to get this performance or result.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have used Alletra for nearly two years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The batteries, BIOS configuration, and power supply are much more stable than the previous models.
How are customer service and support?
I rate HPE support eight out of 10. Their support is kind, and they respond quickly.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We have IBM's flash array. We face too many problems with IBM's flash array because the code is unstable and nodes must be restarted. We haven't seen these issues with Alletra. We also use Oracle Cloud and plan to use AWS, but the cost is too high.
How was the initial setup?
Alletra is straightforward if you connect it properly. Once it's plugged in, you assign IP addresses and start configuring the security

The configuration capacity it has to create a cluster for replication is excellent
What is our primary use case?
We primarily use the solution for our data warehouse. We had a latency problem with data warehouse services. We had 3PAR and we migrated everything to Alletra. The latency that Alletra gives us is much lower than that given by 3PAR and it has managed to support the number of IOPs generated by the service.
How has it helped my organization?
The execution response times of data warehouse tasks have improved, and the reports have been produced on time as required by the Bank.
What is most valuable?
The configuration capacity it has to create a cluster for replication is excellent.
The latency it gives me is incredible.
Alletra provides a cloud-like operational model on-prem for managing data infrastructure. In terms of administration, we can do stuff from anywhere; we do not need to be on the local management network. That is one of the best benefits. So is the whole subject of team status reports through "GreenLake.
The guarantee of data availability to our organization is important. I work in a financial area, so protecting data is the most valuable task the bank has and we feel safe with Alletra.
Alletra helped reduce the time in storage provisioning. We have reduced it by two hours. Before switching solutions, it used to take us two to three hours, and we have reduced it to about 15 minutes with Alletra.
Alletra improved our storage performance in terms of IOPs. It has been reduced, however, I couldn't say by how much right now. I do know that with the storage we had before, we were already saturated with 30,000 IOPs, whereas with Alletra we have put 50,000 IOPs in it and it has worked well.
What needs improvement?
I haven't found anything that could be improved. It's a good product overall. We didn't buy it for production purposes. We wanted to use it for development. That said, due to the efficiency it has, the company is already thinking about putting it into production.
Maybe they could just reduce the number of racks and the amount of rack space.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've used the solution for two years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
To date, we have not generated any cases for Alletra, which means it has given us 100% stability. In these past two years, Alletra has never generated any cases for us in terms of stability issues - which is a very good sign.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We have not had the opportunity to require more resources at the moment.
How are customer service and support?
Support is excellent. It is easy to ask for help, and the response we receive is very specific. We do not give the situation much thought or go back and forth about it.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We used 3PAR. We changed to a new technology due to obsolescence more than any other reason.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was relatively simple. After installation, there were not many configurations. We were quickly up and running. The support was very good.
What about the implementation team?
We used the help of a third-party vendor and received good attention.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The issue of price and cost is handled by another area; I am from the technical side.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We evaluated Dell and Pure Storage. With Pure Storage the difference was the price. With Dell, the difference was mostly in the number of IOPs supported by Alletra and the type of rack they used.
What other advice do I have?
I give Alletra a ten out of ten. I have no complaints about Alletra at this time as it exceeded our expectations.
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?
Microsoft Azure

Provides reliable storage, speed, and performance
What is our primary use case?
HPE Alletra Storage is mainly used as a database.
What is most valuable?
The solution's most valuable features are reliable storage, speed, and performance.
HPE Alletra Storage’s hard disk change makes it good for predicting problems and preventing them before they occur.
What needs improvement?
We faced many problems with HPE Alletra 6000, and we did not understand whether it was because of some issue with the controllers or the disk. However, we changed it, and we don't use it anymore.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using HPE Alletra Storage for five years.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I think the solution's scalability is enough for us because we cannot use one storage for all. We get a lot of storage and share data.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We previously used HPE MSA, HPE 3PAR, and HPE EVA.
How was the initial setup?
The solution’s initial setup is smooth.
What other advice do I have?
We use the HPE Alletra 9060, HPE Alletra 9080, and HPE Alletra 6000 versions of the solution. We may consider using other vendors, such as Pure Storage or Dell Storage, in the future because we want to know which one offers the best price.
We chose HPE Alletra Storage because we have the best HPE partner to help us whenever we have a problem. He's one of the best vendors in our country. This is very important for us because some vendors or partners are not so efficient. Since we use the solution in banking, we cannot stop the systems. We call our vendor for support and to understand the problem, and they always help us.
We have around 50 to 60 terabytes in one storage.
Overall, I rate the solution ten out of ten.

Scalable, simple to deploy, and good support
What is our primary use case?
It is for dHCI, which is the hyper-converged infrastructure for HPE. It is replacing the tradition where when you have node storage, you have to purchase a model of switches. It combines the compute and storage.
How has it helped my organization?
Its benefits vary because I have used many models. I see it now handling VDI. Previously, when I had VDI and I put HPE for it, I would always go for Simplivity, whereas now, with the new model and GreenLake, they have attached Alletra to the cloud. It is serving people working from home a lot. They do not need to log in to do VPN anymore, create volumes, and manage their backups. If they have a full system for virtual storage, and they have Zerto for application replication, they can manage everything on the cloud. Zerto can also be managed on the cloud. If you have a stack, it does not matter how many systems you have. They all are going to show up in one interface. This is a huge benefit. Anything living in the storage can be monitored through the cloud.
HPE Alletra Storage has different models to cover SMBs, midsize companies, and enterprises. Enterprise companies with modern compute, CPU, and memory can have more virtual machines. It is easy for Alletra to grow and expand with the shelves. Customers are happy with it. Only one time I upgraded Alletra from 6010 to 6030 to add more storage and change the controllers. Customers are happy with Alletra. They do not complain. I never see them complain.
What is most valuable?
It is the simplicity of the deployment. They have unified all the features they have. For example, the creation and management of the storage was previously done through the plugins but with limited features. It was slow and had some challenges, whereas now, they have modern plug-ins that have more features and simulate the interface for the storage. Customers love it. The thing that they love the most about the plug-in is the one-click upgrade. They do not need to go to each device.
What needs improvement?
There can be more visibility and statistics for the customers to see. The customers would love to see AI. Even if it is not AI, there can be more visibility and real-time statistics that IT people can monitor and show to their bosses and impress them. To monitor things, they have reports, but the report system is old. Reports are by email. If they can show monthly growth and advise on the usage, it will make the lives of customers and IT people easy. They are going to love it. They would like to have one tool that can take them everywhere. There should be a single pane of glass. If they sit in a meeting, they should be able to answer questions related to whether they need more storage. They should not have had to go to different portals to get results, which creates confusion. If they have one place where they can see everything in graphics, it will be great.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using HPE Alletra Storage for three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I have been working with HPE for six years. When I do an upgrade, I can see the Nimble that I installed for the customer five years ago as it is. No one touched it.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
They continue to do a good job. I did not reach the max for anything. Every time I add a shelf for the customer, it takes 15 minutes. You just add a shelf, put the SaaS, and you are good to go.
How are customer service and support?
Their support works very well. You can just grab the phone and reach out to their support. Their support answers you immediately. This is a big deal for the customers.
I do deployment as well. Every time I get stuck at something or something goes wrong because something is missing or the customers do not have a proper configuration, I can reach out to their support immediately. I just pick up the phone, and they answer. We talk for ten minutes, and their support engineer understands the case. I open a secure channel for him to access or I give him a CLI with remote access. He applies his magic and reset the things.
I would rate them a ten out of ten because they get my issues solved. If the support engineer can not resolve an issue, he just escalates it. Being a technical person, I understand that the response can take longer. There could be some bugs, and their support team cannot give you the answer immediately.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I am HPE ASE certified. I do not bring any other customers to the game. I always present HPE. It has been six years since I have been doing this work for my company. We are beating Cisco. We are beating anyone with Dell PowerVault. We beat all of those models.
All the other companies have the same solution, but it comes down to knowing the expectations of the customer and putting things together for them from the switch to the compute to the storage. When you present them together, the result is going to be a yes. The price also plays a role, but HPE is what customers like to go for most of the time. About 70% of customers decide in advance where they will go, but some customers are surprised with the combination that we bring. We put Zerto, and we put the cloud for them. We provide them visibility and make the deployment easy for them. We give them administrator training. All these things that we add on top make customers comfortable to go with HPE even if they do not know HPE.
About 60% to 70% of customers go with the cheapest price, but they also need to see the performance and other things. We have a lot of customers. We took them to HPE Headquarters in Houston. We bring customers to events like HPE Discover. Last year, we brought a customer here and sold four sites to him with dHCI. We finished the Dallas one or the last one three months ago.
How was the initial setup?
Our clients mostly use it on-prem, but they also use it for the DR site and HQ.
The deployment is simple.
What other advice do I have?
I would rate HPE Alletra Storage a nine out of ten. There should be 99% uptime. There are no issues with dHCI when it comes to upgrades, but with Alletra, they need to have the ESXi upgraded to the latest version. They need to use the correct or compatible plug-ins for it. Every time you go up with the storage, you need to look at your environment. Customers are probably not aware of all this because they do not create volumes every year or every day. There are certain things they need to keep in mind to upgrade. I do not blame the device. They need to initiate a call with the support for compatibility to ensure that everything will work.
